My sister-in-law has a 2018 Tundra and has put over 15K towing her 24’ trailer and still loves it. We have the fully loaded 2021 Tacoma 4 x 4, long bed. We get 18 mpg w/a 6 cyl so your milage is decent. We also have a RAM 5500 (for our business) w/Cummins…at over $7/gallon fuel costs for the business are crazy. Hefty rubber mats are a must! I so hear you on the cup holders, same problem in my Tacoma - 9 cup holders and nowhere for a bigger water bottle! I use three smaller bottles, one with a sports lid. I just swap out the lid when I need more water. The other two lids seal fully so if I need the cup holder for a to-go cup or whatever I can just toss a full bottle in the back or on the floor. You'll find what works for you. I've been considering a Tundra so I really appreciate all you've shared about your truck shopping experience here and on IG. I also went from a 4Runner (2006) w/105,000 miles V8 to a Tundra (2017) 35,000 miles for my tow vehicle. I also have the 38 gallon tank and love the longer drive times between stopping. I kept the 4Runner as my daily ride, love it too much to part with it. One recommendation on the Tundra during the winter, don’t mount your phone on one of those vent clips, the wonderful heater in the Tundra would cause my phone to display an overheating warning and I would have to hold it out the window for a few minutes to cool down until I switched to a phone mount that uses the cup holder. I enjoy your channel, and look forward to your future adventures.

After retirement, I bought a 2015 Tundra which I used to move to the mountains in Tennessee with, then to the mountains of Colorado for 2 years each place. That truck has never let me down and I used it to get to 14er trailheads all over Colorado- very rough rocky roads, as you know. I had trouble seeing my blind spots so I removed all the headrests on the back seat- which I recommend. Also, if your camper has a sliding front glass, your animals (and you in emergency) can go back and forth from the cab to the camper. Just some suggestions. I'll bet you will love that truck Cass.

Great respect for your in depth patient research. Knew you would make out great on the trade in. Did not know it would be that great. lol You are a heck of a negotiator. All your reasons for your choice here I 100% agree on. I personally would not aim for the others you said you had considered. And knowing you tow a "base camp" trailer, I was not sure why you went with the Tundra until you discussed the camper you want to put on it. So, again, you are brilliant with you well thought out path of what your needs are going to be. A LOT of people seem to just buy what ever has the #1 bells and whistles they are looking for and compromise on everything else. Suggestion about your thermos cup holder modification, use VELCRO to hold the adapter down. Unless the thermos is the issue flying out of place. I am not a Tundra fan, but it will more than likely out last the other options you were considering. So once again, perfect choice! Enjoy. :)

The 5.7 has a stellar reputation. There are several million mile trucks that sport that engine. I personally think it was a wise move to not jump into a turbo V6. The truck market is of course nuts. I was at a local Toyota dealership a couple of weeks ago and they had zero new trucks for sale at their location. A 6 month or more wait for new ones. They had a USED Tundra in the inside showroom. All cleaned up and shiny. And it, if I remember correctly, was carrying a 50K dollar plus price tag.
@wildbill23c2 жыл бұрын
The million mile trucks are actually running the 4.7L V8, not the 5.7L, however by now I'm sure there are a few 5.7L's out there getting to the 1M or over...but the first few were actually the 4.7L V8. I had a 2008 Tundra DC 5.7L V8, 4x4...had a few recurring issues with mine, and after the 3rd time I sold the truck at 104k. The front differential howl/growl TSB, and rear axle bearings were the 2 main problems mine had. Otherwise good truck, plenty of power. I have a 2005 Tundra crew cab 4.7L V8 4x4 which feels more solid than my 08 Tundra did, and my 08 Tundra I bought new, the 05 was purchased used. 05 Tundra has 167k on it now.

They may not tow a whole a lot or have high payloads, higher clearance or even outrun a raptor but their reliability/dependability is amazing. Congrats! Use 91 Octane or higher and you will get better gas milage 17-22 mpg. It is on the owners manual if you want to read it. I get around 570 miles to a full tank on mine with premium fuel. With 89 octane mid grade i was getting 15-18 mpg and 525-550 miles to a full tank. With 87 octane I got 13-15 mpg and 450 miles to a full tank. Try 4 full fuel tanks with octanes to see the difference. Toyota Tundra mpg was tested at 91 octane to get the hp and milage. Hope this helps. Regular maintenance and oil changes will make it last well over half a million miles. Have fun, great videos!

Quote from Chuck Yeager "never fly the first generation of anything". You are a smart lady and it's apparent you've given this tons of thought. Just hope that Tundra can in fact handle that truck camper once it's outfitted. Looking forward to your build.

Congratulations on your new truck, Cass! It looks great and exactly what you were hoping for. I agree with other comments below, you are so loyal to your furbabies, making sure they are comfortable while joining you in all of your journeys. God bless and enjoy the new rig! Looking forward to your next filmed adventure! :) Wish I could go with you to Alaska....if I were young again, I would have absolutely done this in my younger days! You GO girl!!!

Great choice on the Tundra! I have a 2012 Limited CrewMax that I bought a few months before the used vehicle market skyrocketed in price so I got lucky there. The 2007-2013 Tundra had one huge cup holder for big bottles like the one that you use and 2 smaller ones, they should have kept that same design for the 2014-2021 models.
@TailsofWanderlust2 жыл бұрын
Wish they had kept those cupholders!

You made a well informed decision based on thorough due diligence. Great truck that meets all your current needs. You can think about a larger capacity truck if and when you get a larger camper. I think you'll be happy with the current setup for a while. You're a smart lady with looks to match. Anxious to follow you on your trip to Alaska.

Congratulations! I value reliability so much, and we all know that Toyota is the best. Given the luck you’ve had with your 4Runner, smart to stay with what you know and like. Looking forward to that time you add a shell to the bed and the storage features/miss you will make. Your Tundra is my dream truck, as well - the right cab configuration, the right bed length, and the right color.

I love ❤️ my tundra, mine has the tow package that’s great. I’d wait to buy the 2022 there’s been some issues. Happy Tundra-ing. My 2010 was a cancelled order, I got a ton of extras, plus they wanted my 2006 Tacoma. I put extras in mine and I’ll keep it until it stops. It looks brand new.

Great video, Cass! When the Basecamp first came out, I looked at one at the local RV dealer...but it wasn’t time. I remember standing in the kitchen and being super impressed with the view. I think it’s time now. Dove into your videos, and Airstream needs to send you a sales check. You sold me. Then...all the videos I’d watched had your 4Runner. Love them, but didn’t want one based on other everyday needs. I did some spec’ing, and came up with getting a 2017-18 Tundra. I’ve had Toyota trucks in the past, love them. Then I saw you switched. 🤣 I’m not totally trying to be you, since I only have a cat 😹😹😹 Long message, but Clif’s Notes version: Thank you for doing you, and sharing with us. You three rock. 🙏🏼

Thank you so much!! The Tundra/Basecamp combo is a great one. I'm loving how much storage the bed provides. Wishing you safe travels and many adventures!

You give just the kind of detail I like to see, I appreciate your videos. The real-world, unvarnished gas mileage figures...thanks especially for those! I have an 06 Xterra, very similar to your old 4Runner, and I get 15-17 MPG, but 11.3 average so far towing my Casita. Your numbers make me feel right at home ;) Nice truck!

FYI: I'm pretty sure the dealership knew the upgrade. Dealerships consider any modification to stock as valueless. A vehicle holds it value more if you keep it original. Same holds true for any and all collectible vehicles. People pay top dollars for originality. However, this might not be the case for private seller/buyer. Trust me you will get more money for an all bone stock trade in versus a mod trade in any day.
@TailsofWanderlust2 жыл бұрын
Interesting to know thank you! And they had no idea on the upgrades, as when we walked around it and I started asking questions, the salesman literally said, Oh.... didn't realize that was there

Yup. I bought a 2022 Platinum F250 Tremor and waited 5-6 months, but priced below dealer invoice by 1%. If you can’t wait for an order the market is crazy priced.

Glad you got a good deal in this market!

@@TailsofWanderlust Sounds like you did super well with the used market. Nearly drove your trade in for 100k miles for free, then got a good price on used truck that will go another 200k. Well done
