In this video podcast episode, I go in depth on the subject of healthcare in Ecuador by talking about my most recent experience in a Hospital in Ecuador, my past experiences with hospitals and healthcare in Ecuador (including the IESS in Ecuador), revealing the answers to questions that I asked doctors in Ecuador, and I give my thoughts on the things you need to understand about healthcare in Ecuador including some information on if free healthcare is enough for you if you decide to retire to Ecuador or how insurance may or may not be beneficial to you in Ecuador.

Good message that we should appreciate doctors and nurses.

Hi Ace. Great & helpful video! Medical care is a frustration almost anywhere; a relatively simple medical problem in the USA can bankrupt you quickly (even with insurance), while Ecuador has the issues you illuminated in your video. The advice that seems most common for expats in Ecuador is to have private insurance. Compared to the US, it is still much, much, more affordable. I know it varies, but do you or your friends feel that private insurance in Ecuador generally works well? I have heard it can be excellent. BTW, I always appreciate and support medical professionals anywhere. Even with the high pay in the US, medical folks sacrifice a lot and were real heroes during COVID, as I know they are in Ecuador. Thanks also to YOU for being a teacher! Education is key in medical issues and everything else. Your voice, both on this channel and no doubt in the classroom, is Soooooo important! Best of luck in your recovery. All the best, Bob

GM this was a good video but i am interested what you think about the fact that JUST your ambulance ride in the US would have been at least $2500? The ER visit would have been another 10k. If you had the insurance that most people who DO have insurance can afford, you would have to pay $5-6k before the insurance paid anything. On TOP of paying $400/month for the insurance (that would be a great price). This makes people not go for even preventive care. A small mole that could have been cut off for a few hundred dollars easily turns into cancer of the whole body and a million dollars. I do understand the salary differences with my numbers both in the patients pay and the healthcare professionals. Thank you for what you do!

Hi Ace, thanks for sharing this detailed healthcare update. In particular, we appreciate your time in adding multiple language subtitle options. (I'm Like # 65 for this video) I can only imagine how medical professionals feel with several of the details you presented. Do you think in the future you might bring one of your friends on the channel to further discuss details current and future Expats might be overlooking? For example, we've thought very seriously about buying a HIGH Deductible private insurance plan, and pay out of pocket to visit private facilities. Of course, this would mean for any and all maintenance visits, we'd be prepared to pay 100% out of pocket. What we'd be most interested in is essentially a "Catastrophic Care Policy". If a member of my family were to fall and break a hip, or if one of us had a stroke and required a week of hospitalization, we'd like to have a policy which would "shield" o Escudarnos from costs above our anticipated High Deductible. Once hospitalized, does the insurance group do anything to make sure costs being charged are in line with what they presume to be "Fair and Reasonable" costs? We'd also like to know what are the potential "pot holes" to private Health insurance in Ecuador. Please note, I'm not referring to IESS. Don Shader did a fine job introducing us to an insurance rep from Blue Box, however perhaps you could introduce us to another provider and or one of your friends in the industry who has first hand experience with Private policies? Thanks for your consideration. Que tengan una linda noche.

Free emergency care and PREVENTIVE care LOWERS the overall cost of care. Putting a 24/7 clinic next to emergency rooms is a very good way to redirect the less urgent cases.

Hi Ace: Another great video. Question: Do you have IESS or private health insurance? I have heard from some expats that taking an ambulance may be too slow if you are dying. They recommend taking a taxi to the hospital. What do you think ?

Healthcare America is great. The fall back is the cost because they charge way more than they need. If you have excellent insurance, then you have nothing to worry about but if you don’t medical bills in The states can bankrupt you in one visit

Is health insurance a requirement in Ecuador for those over age 65? Most health insurance won't cover someone my age -77 without charging over $500 monthly.

In the US you have to wait more than 12 hours to be checked not even by a Doctor. I had got back from Cuenca Ecuador my husband had tumor when I was in US they said it's from wear glasses but thanks to the Doctors in Ecuador knew it was a tumor we did the surjery next day and he was in and out so fast and did not even cost must at all. As a person lives in the US the Medical and Doctors are way way better than here.

I wonder if I can get my healthcare in Colombia while living in Ecuador. Just a joke. I'm sure the answer is no. However, after watching this video I am more nervous now than I was before. I've heard others talk about Ecuador healthcare and most of them say it is far superior to American healthcare. Now I'm having doubts. I will wait for the part 2 to draw a more concise opinion of Ecuadorian healthcare.

That’s a good question. Don once said that if he needed any, that he would personally get his treatments in the states, but I guess that’s for the more severe situations like with the Solca hospital and such. (Most) Doctors really try to do a good job here but the lack of organization makes it difficult for them to do it the best way possible, as you could probably tell from the doctor’s responses. But yeah, I’ll make sure to cover more topics when I talk about healthcare again. If you have any specific questions I can maybe ask doctors for that round, let me know! And as always, thanks for listening/watching! 👏🏼

Don also can get free (or nearly free) healthcare. Most people in the US can't get ANY care because they don't have money. The US has the highest cost per Capita. Not taking into account the people who don't even GO to a doctor! And for that do they get the best outcomes? NO not even CLOSE!

It seems to me they are just not understanding the concept of triage. In emergency rooms in the U.S. people are evaluated and the most serious cases are treated first. The U.S. has horrible healthcare issues especially the cost of care but if someone comes in from a gunshot or car accident they are going to be treated before someone with a cold. Why can't people be turned away from specialty hospitals and sent to basic clinics for basic problems? Or require a referral system where a basic doctor approves a visit to the specialist? Just these simple changes would unclog the more advanced healthcare settings.

I agree that they need more training in Triage. If triage determines that your situation is not an emergency, then th4ey should tell you to go to a local clinic. They actually do that in the hospital triages in my area.

@@jamielivingston7765 Not sure where you are but that is not the norm in the US. I've dealt with emergency rooms across the US and patients are taken in in order of life and death illnesses. My niece and sister are nurses in 2 different states, and they talk about the whole triage system.

It’s not Health Care. It’s illness and injury care. Once the bleeding has been stopped, the wound cleaned, closed and bone set (except for ribs) in place, you heal yourself, or not.
