MY OFF GRID YURT | TINY HOUSE - Day 5 • MY OFF GRID YURT | TIN... NicHolistic and I, Jake Mace, are in a race. A race to build shelter in the British Columbian wilderness before the bears wake up for the spring. Our first shelter was a rainproof carport from Easy Build Structures in Vancouver. Next we are building a 30' Yurt from Pacific Yurts. The cougars are probably watching us anonymously, the wolves have most likely heard us, and the bears will soon smell us! We must get our shelter erected within the next few weeks. They are coming! This Yurt build and Yurt life will be a journey, we hope you SUBSCRIBE and come with us! Enjoy #yurt #offgrid #tinyhouse #jakemace #livingoffgrid #garden #veganathlete
Nicole and I are attempting to live off the grid in British Columbia, Canada. We have 8 acres of forest property sandwiched in between the Pacific Ocean, a fresh water lake, and a stream which flows year round from the lake into the ocean. Today we build a shelter to allow us to escape the rain and have a home-base to congregate from!
For over nearly 10 years I grew a fruit tree, permaculture, garden, and native edible plant, herb, and raised bed garden food forest. You can still watch all the garden videos of my old desert garden in Arizona. I was born in British Columbia and I have returned to the Rain Forests of British Columbia to a "Raw Land" property to grow my 1st FULL EDIBLE FOOD FOREST Off Grid on a wilderness property. This climate is temperate and coastal, rarely seeing snow in the winter and highs in the 80's (30 Celsius) in the summer. It is a rare microclimate that spans from gardening zone 7-9. The property is 8 acres and completely overgrown, mostly with conifer trees. This area is a verifiable rain forest and situated in the Southwestern-most tip of the Canadian "Great Bear Rain Forest". NicHolistic ( / holisticnicole ) and I will be learning about edible seaweeds, edible native plants, edible mushrooms, and many other edible native trees/plants as we attempt to Build a Yurt, Draw Our Energy Clean, Live Off the Grid, and Grow an Epic Superfoods Garden and Fruit Tree Orchard. We will also have a lot of changes coming so get ready. More videos and BTS Clips at my VLOG channel / adventureswjakenicole

09:25 we were nervous this leaning tree may fall on our yurt or platform so both him and the little one next to him had to go. We will have to clear a lot more trees, strategically, to make room for our garden and fruit trees. We will use the wood for log cabin shed, raised beds, and fencing! #haircut (P.S. I have a plan for this stump...that's why it was cut at this height)
@tammymcneill3359
@tammymcneill3359 5 жыл бұрын
you should have made your first cut on the opposite site of the leaning tree and then finish cut is made on the side you cut...that is why it fell the way it did. It was painful to watch you cut it in such a dangerous way.

Jake, look into building a "rammed earth" home it'll last generations and super cozy all year round. It's literally dirt cheap to build it, you just need subsoil and lots of physical labor.
@Alex-uo4qq

Same for cob houses and earth bag houses. Strawbale houses have the best insulation value but cost more usually. Log cabin could be a possibility as well.
@MetalGearMk3
@MetalGearMk3 5 жыл бұрын
@@Alex-uo4qq very true, I just think rammed earth has a very nice look to it compare to earthbag/cob house. I've been making my own rammed earth bricks to understand the mixture and process. It's an exciting ancient technology. I'm sure Jake could find volunteers for the rammed earth project on the scale of a home.

Jake & Nicole - Thank you for filming and sharing your adventure. I love seeing how you are progressing every few days with excellent videos. Yes, its only March (well April in a day or so) but still very early in the spring. We have had great weather so far this spring and I really hope it holds out. Last summer was not so great... we had "June-uary" (January weather in June), July, August, then pretty much winter. It looks like you have joined a really great community where the neighbors all work together and help each other out - but why did you chose to buy property in that community and not somewhere else? Yams are yellow inside and sweet potatoes are orange. Yes ? I have found that most produce clerks don't know this. If they do they are the smart ones and know their vegees and how to cook them. I have found a few clerks like this, but they don't stay around long. One fellow was from Jamaica and he explained all of the cool, weird looking, big, round vegees he had for sale. he told me how to cook them too. Very nice and smart guy.

Yummy looking dinner ! WHERE IS THE PROTEIN !!! Cutting standing timber goes much faster with a saw, especially a two man saw. You should also now understand why lumber jacks from a 100-150 years ago spent HOURS every evening filing their saws and axes ! Your foundation blocks really should be sitting on about 15cm-20cm of gravel. After every winter those blocks will sink deeper into the soil. If you have gravel underneath them, you can simply jack up the low spots and add more gravel.

Yeah, cool. But hey, just as someone mentioned, notch cut the tree first, and maybe get some professional to help you get started taking down bigger trees. That could have ended really badly :( I know, that tree wasn't the biggest one, but hey, the forces unleashed when something goes wrong in that process can create some serious injury in a fraction of a second. Please take this advice from a Finn that has been surrounded by trees and woods all his life (and also have been a long time follower, and I wanna keep on doing that!).
