License free for 5 years. Got a letter claiming I was watching the iplayer at the beginning of the year. Missed the first goons visit in July. Two of them showed up in September, shut the door on them after asking them who they were (they tried to engage me in conversation). Threatening letter from them followed stating they would visit me on October 10th, nobody showed. Absolute charlatans. Disgusting fear tactics in the wording of the letters they send. Trying to coerce folk into paying for a licence which they don’t require. Much respect to you Jon , you are doing a great job. Telling them you legally don't need a TV Licence does NOT stop the threatening, harrassing letters. I told them and six months later the threatening, harrassing letters began. Now on my 2nd tound of letters, expecting at least 3 more before it goes quiet for a month or two, then they start again. Therefore, why bother telling them anything. Just stop paying.

That's why we didn't bother telling them. We just stopped paying for the licence. We get letters every month. It seems as the letters are on a rolling cycle. They go straight into the shredder. With the current cost of postage this silly stunt of there's must be costing a fortune.

I have been telling them I don't need a license for nearly 10 years and they left me alone. Mind you I live on a private road tucked away, which even the local Taxis cant find most of the time. That's what probably has kept them of my back. I have been advising people about the rules [ as a CAB advisor] for about 10 years, and I am pleased to see that people are understanding their rights. They should have investigated themselves. They lost over £90 of my payments and it cost me over £20 on the phone. I sent scans of their bus ticket receipts and they tried to wriggle out of it by claiming they couldn’t open them, so i used a different app and asked my local MP’s office to help, which thankfully they did. If they lost mine they must have lost other peoples. But i guess most people would assume they didn’t need to retain the receipts and use a scanner to revive the fading ink, as they are computerised transactions.

I live in a block of elderly peoples council flats, we have a recreation room with a telly. I have checked and the warden has told me that the council DONT provide TV licenses. As a tenant I have nothing to do with the rec room, although I am entitled to use it, and ALL tenants are mandated to contribute to its cleaning etc. SO who is responsible for the TV license which we legally should have, as people do watch live TV on it? When ever I get envelopes like that I fill them with lots of scrap untraceable paper, make sure it is nice and thick and pop it in the post with no stamp so the recipient has to pay the postage and the no stamp fine.

Hey CJC. I had a visit 3 wks ago from a tv licence salesman. I did speak to him with a civil attitude he said that there was no tv licence at this address, so I told him I don't watch tv, I am living on a state pension and I'm also a carer for my wife who suffers with type 1 diabetes insulin dependant, which has caused a host of other illnesses. Such as Blindness to the right eye, poor vision in her left eye., Neuropathy, Gastroparesis, Osteoarthritis. I control her insulin and medication. I have had to take on the jobs that my can no longer do, this has been a big challenge for me at 68 yrs old and suffer with fibromyalgia, and that my wife required a special diet. When the salesman left he said I understand your circumstances, and he would put a block on my address. Monday this week I received another letter that they have authorised another visit. How I draft a no rights of implied rights of access??? My wife cant see tv, and my increased work load, I'm just happy to fall into bed by 22:00 Thanks for any advice.

You made the mistake of talking to a stranger - just ignore. They are not interested in your life story. Basic confidence and assertiveness is required. This neutralises any perceived authority. The legal occupier of (write you address) I withdraw your legal rights of access to the above property including any letters that I may perceive as harassing or threatening in any manner. This is due to a recent visit which has caused me harm and distress from your subsequent letter from that visit. I live in a block of flats, phoned up TVL, and cancelled my license 2 years ago. I've had 19 letters in that time, and no visits. I think that they won't bother with flats, and as what you say, many flats have to buzz you in, and they don't want to waste time knocking on 1 door on the top floor just to be told get lost. It could be a factor!

I’d print an A4 size sheet of paper saying F OFF on it. Put it in the return envelope. Put no stamp on it and post it. They’ll have to pay the postage when they receive it. Simples 😂😂😂😉

I have been telling them I don't need a license for nearly 10 years and they left me alone. Mind you I live on a private road tucked away, which even the local Taxis cant find most of the time. That's what probably has kept them of my back. I have been advising people about the rules [ as a CAB advisor] for about 10 years, and I am pleased to see that people are understanding their rights. I have received one of these business letters. This is an office without TV's but we do have computers with internet access and staff have mobile phones. The letter has our business address at the top and addressed to the proprietor or manager. At the end of the first paragraph it says we need a licence for any device including TV, computer, laptop, mobile phone or tablet.

I work for a division of the DWP we use a facility for centralised mail handling. We received one of these letters sent to our mail handling site. Not our office address, not the facility address, the benefit specific address.

"The officers will still try stitch you up" YES, THEY WILL! A neighbour had a visit, knock at the door "Who are you? No thanks, don't need one" and shut the door, BUT.... They saw his TV through an exterior window, and EVEN THOUGH it was playing a Dismally DVD for his two kids, THEY REPORTED HIM FOR WATCHING LIVE TV!!! So, off to court he is dragged, and though he and his solicitor HAD TO JUMP THROUGH MANY STRESS INDUCING HOOPS, he DID finally win the case!!!! So... Moral of the story, IF YOU DO NOT NEED to pay the TV TAX, CHECK TO SEE IF YOUR TV IS VIEWABLE FROM AN EXTERIOR WINDOW! Curtains, blinds, even MOVE the damn thing! Those cnuts WILL try ANYTHING to get you! 😡😡😡

I don't have a licence as i dont need one. However I do listen to Radio 4 now and again for which, of course, I don't need a licence. I de registered from BBC iPlayer but now I'm unable to access Radio 4 on my tv nor will Alexa connect to Radio 4 unless I'm registered with iplayer.

I have a BBC 'account" which goes to a junk email address, I have never 'registered' for i-player nor been into it - IIRC it asks you to confirm you have a TV licence before you enter it. I just go into Sounds for listening to BBC 3, 4 and 4 xtra and have no problems accessing them. However, I first registered with them many years ago so maybe things have changed since then.

OMG how desperate are these people. more threatening wording from tv licencing. can I ask a question.....my nephew visited his other cousin recently, he connected his iPad to their wifi and watched some BBC iplayer kids shows. The address they were at is a No license needed status. Within days they received a letter from the hounds telling them they knew they had been watching BBC player at that address and now needed a licence,or else... is this the case, I'm not sure on this any advice welcome

@@TheFurrry you have to very careful having a “BBC Account” for being able to comment on news stories etc. that account allows you to touch on such things as iplayer without any warning “you need a license” to access this. When you sign up to a bbc account you get an email to the email address you use that you have to click on. Once you do that they can see everything you are doing. So that would explain the letter your family received

It seems to be true, yes. My local Starbucks has a very Official certificate on the wall stating that their WiFi was not to be used for watching TV. Someone got moaned at for watching TV in the café at my local library. He countered by showing them his license and that he was actually using the cellular network, not the library's WiFi

I have a High Street camera shop and recently had a letter. Different from yours and more or less the same as home. I don't need a licence, there is a TV to check camcorders but without an aerial I think I would struggle to watch TV even if I wanted to.

We have a nice postman and on occasion, a very nice post lady. They are both most considerate, if we have a parcel for example they very nicely will just pop it behind my gate. All junk mail can be returned to sender? It costs the sender (lessons?) There is no need for a stamp? This keeps these good people in their jobs.

I just had a wee visit from the TV goon squad this week after nearly two years of no licence. He mumbled the first part which I think was probably my name then declared TV licensing. I promptly said ‘no thanks, not interested, goodbye, have a good day’ and shut the door. A few friends now think they’ll get a warrant for a revisit cos I didn’t talk to them or let them in my flat 🤦‍♂️😂

When BBC shares in C4 S4, are sold no tvl would be needed. TVL is live tv and radio, BBC only, in fact the Act states communications, and in fact there is no tvl as in law its still a radio with battery licence under the Post Office

The BBC does not have shares in Channel 4 nor S4C. However, the BBC is responsible for funding S4C. The TV Licence is fundamentally for the privilege of watching live tv, a licence is not required to listen to the radio. The reference suggested to the post office is very old legislation that has been updated many times. The legislation that currently covers the licence is part 4 of The Communications Act 2003, titled "Licensing of TV Reception"

I used to save junk mail with return envelopes, then I would swap the stuff from one to another and post them, it keeps the post office staff in work plus whoever sends the junk has to pay the postage.
