Firstly, I can't believe you're 30! Youthfulness is on your side my friend! :) Secondly, being a bit older than 30, I 'collected' maritime artifacts before the internet and let me tell you that it was a process. The Titanic Historical Society in Springfield Massachusetts advertised a seller in Hoboken NJ (I think his name was Ken Schultz) and 4X a year he would mail you a catalogue (at a price). His motto was "The Catalog is a collectable in itself). 4X a year I was allowed to buy some trivial thing (such as a menu, postcard or etc.) (I actually have that souvenir Olympic Log that you showed in this post.) Once (I was in grade 4 / 1990) my mom allowed me to splurge and buy a larger (more expensive) item) and I selected a Stateroom clock from the RMS Queen Elizabeth at the cost of $400 USD. The art-deco clock was made for a nightstand and was brass w/leather sides and the Cunard logo on top. The joke was, being in Canada, when the clock arrived to our house, my parents had to fork over $800.00 on top of the original cost for Customs and duty fees on an historical item. *that plus the exchange rate made that $400 clock set them back over 1000! LOL .... they were not impressed. Today I still have this clock (and other things) in a shoebox (lol) at my parents house. When I go home for thanksgiving next weekend I will take them out just because I have seen this video. Younger ppl have no idea how difficult it was back before the internet to find items (books, films, movies, etc) on the Titanic. Now, literally here at almost 2am on a Friday, I can literally watch any Titanic movie I want online ... had I been told that as a younger person I NEVER would've believed it. Side note; As I have aged I've learned that though such relics are indeed cool to have, they do not (at least for me) bring the ships any more closer to my currently reality. Long story short, if a reproduction item costs 1/4 as much as an authentic one, the ownership is not that much different in my personal view. In August of 2009 I was in Singapore and saw a wristwatch which hand steel raised from the Titanic as it's hands - this watch was for sale at over $150,000.00 USD. I remember looking at it thinking "hmmm, wearing the Titanic on my wrist - ha ha a bit too out of my price range LOL" That being said, I'd kill for that 2nd class library wood panel. If I had it I would incorporate it into a wall of my house ... and I clearly remember the factory being featured in a Titanic Commutator Magazine. That factory (I think it was a paint factory) had many items from the Olympic and in fact, it's staff cafeteria had elements of the Olympics Parisienne Cafe' within it! Part of me wishes that Cunard would buy the Queen Mary back from Long Beach and restore and sail her. Another part of me thinks that all these Ocean Liner items should be centralised in a Museum (on board) the Queen Mary.

I have loved and respected all the Olympic class ships since I was about 6 years old. I'm now 32 and I would give anything to see one of these ships in real life. I look at photos and real footage, but I just don't feel like you can get a REAL sense of how magnificent these amazing vessels were.

I love all this history!!!! Your collection is amazing!!! I have a great tip, with the historic papers you have; get some non-acidic big paper archival envelope sleeves..Used to work as an artist at Disney, and toured the Studio Museum and learned about this. DON"T fold the letter, or the other items any more, it's too much stress on the paper fibers. Also, keep that letter out of the envelope, and tuck in the envelope flap, flat and not folded, and put the papers in the large, acid-free sleeves i mentioned. Try to keep everything flat from now on, and in a portfolio, or even framed, with non-acidic paper. Just thought I would share that with you. God bless! You have the most AMAZING family! So blessed!!!! Your brother's model build just has me amazed and speechless!!!

Excellent video. Great to see all that is in your collection. I am wondering if you have read the book "The Guide to the Titanic Crew" by Gunter Babler. It presents the crew according to all the departments and their pay. The jobs of people in the crew were not at all easy. The job title doesn't always match what they did. There are lots of interesting items included about the accident and who survived. It's excellent info.

I've seen the panelling section in some of your other videos. It was sitting by the desk. I don't even have a piece of Titanic coal, which I do want. Your collection of artifacts is impressive. I do have "on A Sea of Glass", and I thoroughly enjoy reading it on lunch breaks at work (I keep it in my locker). I also have Ballard's book on finding the Titanic, the illustrated script of Cameron's movie, and another of the making of Cameron's film. Also have several magazines that Life, National Geographic, and others have published. I think a ghost story video with the Queen Mary is an excellent idea. (Jan Griffiths).

Great collection Sam! I own a few models, and even an artifact from the Olympic. I own a glass window panel from a 1st class window from the RMS Olympic which allegedly looked into the Grand Staircase. The glass sits in a wooden plinth which is apparently also made of wood from the Olympic. I also own a 1/400 academy Titanic with all the rigging. I do have a few cheap 3-d roller models of the Titanic, and Aquitania but none of Honor, and Glory.....well not yet anyways. I have a destroyer model, and a plastic model kit of a North Sea Fishing Trawler. Your collection is even better though. I'd love to get a part of the Titanic itself.

Really fantastic collection! Since I have my doubts about Revell-Europe ever releasing a Britannic model kit in the same scale as their Olympic-1911 and Titanic models, I may consider checking out the Honor And Glory site. I wonder what the turn-around would be if I asked for simply a stripped version, no pre-painting involved (something I'd want to do myself anyway, just for the fun)...? I agree, two years is a very long time to have to wait. I don't know if I'd even have two years. Might get so caught up in buying I might wind up with a collection as big as yours.

I cannot believe you got some of the Olympic artefacts from the UK. Tbh, you were right about the history of them being found in a factory but there are other pieces of the Olympic that are now at the Savoy Hotel in London (I believe). And the real life SS Nomadic is at the Belfast museum which I believe you can visit near the same location where the Titanic was built. Never been to the museum before but it’s on my places to visit list. Also shocked you got the journal from the lady who went on the Olympic and you have a tiny piece of the big piece too, Sam. Do you know what the lady’s name was? She must’ve had the most fascinating and adventurous life. 🙂🦋✨

Interesting that you mention Queen Mary ghosts. I have stayed on the Queen Mary 5 times since 2004 (last time being Feb 2020) & only ONCE did I seriously encounter something paranormal. (March 2012, clear as day I heard footsteps walking towards me at 3am!). During that same visit I took a "ghost tour" and put the tour guide in an awkward position; We were being shown "the most haunted cabin" on board and (holding a set of blueprints in my hand) I asked the guide "Which cabin?" When he replied "this one" I said; "well according to the 1936 deck plans this cabin is actually two 3rd class cabins which have since been combined to form one room" .. ha ha ha .. oh that pour guide. Side note; if you do believe in ghost etc (as I somewhat do) there is a risk of having a relic in your personal possession. In November of 2017 I acquired a small relic from an historic site which caused a great deal of human suffering in Eastern Europe - no word of a lie, from the moment it entered my house some strange things started to happen/also a 'melancholic feeling' seemed to descend on my home. For one year I kept the piece before I finally got rid of it, placing it behind a statue of The Virgin Mary. Long story short, the house is back to normal. Let the buyer beware; it is one thing to admire a Titanic item in a museum, another to have it next to where u sleep on your nightstand. :)

@@IhaveQuit124 Thanks for your brief comment. I am usually in the middle ground when it comes to Ghosts - literally I think well, maybe it is something science can't explain or maybe it is paranormal. There were actually two grand staircases in the titanic and olympic . Both grand staircases were in the 1st class section. We know only about the foreword grand staircase. In titanic honer and glory game we can even explore the second grand staircase of the titanic. I couldn't find any detail about the second grand staircase. Anyone know any details about the second grand staircase and what happened to it after titanic sank ?????
@richardz46303 жыл бұрын
hi, i thought you mean the aft staircase do you? Actually you could find some infos from Titanic Wiki, and what happened to it during or after the sinking according to my knowledge i think maybe i could answer your question, this is basically depends on what titanic break-up theory you are taking, first we all know titanic broke up but how the ship broke in two was still uncertain, there are basically 3 well known theories called Banana Peel, Mengot and V break-up, we only talk about the banana peel and mengot theories here, base on the banana peel theory, the ship broke in two right under the 3rd funnel like a cut to the heel, the aft staircase was located between the 3rd and 4th funnels, so during the break-up i thought the aft staircase was still in piece and it went down with the stern section of titanic all way to the bottom of the atlantic, It may be got shredded by water pressure during this periode to the bottom or just got destroyed when the whole stern section reached the sea floor and this banana peel theory was used in james cameron's movie and his 2012 sinking animation and the sinking animation from titanic hornor and glory. Now base on the Mengot theory due to the pressure the ship bended itself in the aft tower area and the whole aft tower part which the aft staircase was, collapsed and fell apart that lead titanic broke up, so i believe the aft staircase was competely destroyed during this break up process.This theory was used in the new Part Time Explorer sinking animation, there's also a youtube channel called Titanic Animations, he made a lot animations about these theories, hope this can help you

Hey Sam great collection. I’ve seen the videos of your birthday when you got the pieces of the Olympic. A while back I took your advice about getting “on a sea of glass”. It took me a while to read it cover to cover….I followed every footnote and reference. But any way…..I’ve got a video idea…series actually. Now you can’t book passage on a transatlantic ship like they used to back in titanic day. You can book a cruise on a floating city for a week. But that’s not the same…you simply can’t travel across the Atlantic on a ship now a days ….it’s all airlines….but you can get passage on a freighter. You pay your way hop on board and travel with the crew. I’d like to do that. Not so much across the Atlantic but in the Great Lakes. Think about it….a week or two. Get on a ship in Detroit…head for “some mill in Wisconsin” and travel the route the Edmund Fitzgerald took. Watching the crew work,talking to the crew, eating with the crew, every waking moment with the crew. I’m sure companies sailing the Great Lakes have similar programs like the ones I’ve read about that cross the Atlantic. You’re the research guy…..look into it. I would help fund this trip. I’d like to come along….can be your camera man…lol….that’s up to you.

It's great to have a family that are as every bit nuts about the subject and actively encourage you. This is rare! Normally the common best state of affairs seems to be long suffering but recognise the Greater Good even if it only means keeping the relevant offspring out of trouble. Here, one person is a well known authority in certain shipping circles. He gets consulted and has written books. His late father, a shipyard worker, was noted as saying the house was so full of shipping memorabilia that he wished he had pushed the lad's pram off the pier. Though father maybe had used another collective word. The QM is supposed to be very haunted. A video would be great! Why not go there with an infra red camera and see what you can come up with. Or perhaps some of that other ghost investigation hard and software and see if it works.
