We had a nest of these up above our second floor patio. I could go out and cook on the grill, sit out there and read, take a nap in the hammock directly under them and once in a while one would come investigate me, then go back to the nest, never once got stung. My wife on the other hand couldn't even come out the door to the patio and they'd run her back in the house. 🤣 Some guys have a man cave, I had a man patio, complete with air superiority/ flying patrols.

These are paper wasps which are a pretty chill species. Please don't kill them if you have them somewhere at your house, they don't hurt bees but do the same job as pollinators. Also they keep yellowjackets away (the common aggressive Vespula species).
@williamhardee886310 ай бұрын
If there’s a nest on my porch, I don’t care how beneficial or chill they are, I’m buying some wasp spray and hosing them down. If it’s just on some random tree I’ll leave it alone, but my house is off limits.

Paper wasps (Polistes) tend to capture and kill caterpillars to use as food for their larvae.
@centex74099 ай бұрын
They imprint much like birds. If you are all they see when they emerge and you're bringing food, they'll mord readily accept you with little to no aggression. In the future, you can do something I call "light herding" with wasps: In a dark room, they go straight to where a light is shining. So put a small led light right above or on the nest, and with the lights off and only the led on, they'll all go straight to the light on the nest. When you capture a nest, do it right at sundown.. Everyone is home and you don't miss any or end up with angry wasps getting home to something they don't like. Also, I've discovered that organic dates are every wasps absolute favorite, and figs. Don't forget to have some plain torn cardboard where they can easily get to the edges. They'll build amazing nests with that stuff.

I actually like this guy. I've made friends with the spiders in my house, mainly because they kill roaches. I let them stay and chill out and they make their little webs near the windows. They can stay and chill as long as they kill and eat the bugs I don't want there.

I've "played" with these creatures (and with yellow jackets, hornets and bumble bees) for some five decades, and one thing I've learned is that it's NEVER a good idea to risk a jar full of insects to capture an additional one, because of the risk of losing those already captured (and possibly getting multiple stings as a result or damaging the nest) although they would return to the original nesting site. In this case it was nearly certain the one still-at-large wasp would continue to return to the nesting site, so it could be captured later, such as in a net. I have found that nests of this species of paper wasp (Polistes exclamans, in some areas referred to as the "guinea wasp") can be moved if built on a portable object without the insects flying off as long as it isn't jerked, or rapid movements made. Other species, such as P. fuscatus and metricus, and likely to fly off their nest with any attempt to move the nest is made. An attempt should have been made to retrieve the pedicel of the nest, and then glue it back onto the nest. By doing this, the nest could have been attached to the lower edge of the board to allow the cells to open essentially downward (as in nature) as well as allowing the wasps to walk on the top of the nest. The first nest collected was small enough that it could have been mounted this way. One can put a little honey on their wings so they can't fly until the other wasps lick it off--this would make transferring them much easier, faster and safer. Recently-emerged wasps of some species, including this one, can be recognized be several means, but even when a bit older, the compound eyes are dark; as the insects age, the eyes get lighter in color. At least some species will attack and sting even after having been fed. I had collected a few baldfaced hornet (Dolichovespula maculata) workers while they were lapping up sap from an oak tree, and kept them in a jar indoors for a few days, adding honey to keep them fed. I collected a worker from some 20 miles away and added it to the jar, where it was promptly attacked and killed by the others. Sometime afterward, I was feeding one without having it enclosed in a container, and after feeding it promptly flew at my leg and stung it. I got her back into the jar. While looking around the oak tree, I discovered a well-developed, active nest on one of the branches, so I'm quite sure these individuals came from that nest. I suspect that these workers, when kept together, had just enough of a social structure to become defensive just as if they had been taken at their nest. However, individual workers collected in the field and kept alone never became aggressive, even if kept in a container with one or more workers of other species, and never attacked if released.

Wasps aren’t our enemy either. I literally just held a Yellowjacket which groomed itself calmly standing on my hand, knowing very well I was alive and flying off the moment I twitched slightly.

Actually more times than not WE are their enemy. Even vibration can piss them off. Simply walking near a nest or even stepping on a criunchy leaf nearby can set the whole crew off. Ive seen it…
