Today we're looking at spiritual teacher, psychologist and author, Ram Dass. His real name was Richard Alpert and his most well-known book ‘Be Here Now’ tells the story of his spiritual awakening, and how you can use meditation and yoga. What can he teach us about fear and uncertainty in a post-pandemic world? Let me know who else you want me to talk about in the comments below!

He reactivated the direct connection to my heart. Such empathy and compassion.. Many years, goosebumps, existential.. thoughts and simply "relating" so much to what he's been saying from all these hours of hearing his voice inside my Being.

Yess!! I've been intrigued by Ram Dass since 2009, when I was working at a hostel in Ireland, they were showing the film "Fierce Grace" I was amazed at this brilliant human. Since then I listen to his lectures on youtube regularly for spiritual guidance, and have read some of his books, Be here Now, Polishing the MIirror, etc. His death hit me hard, I cried but knew I was crying at the loss of his physical form, and his presence and teachings remain very much a part of my life. Especially during the pandemic. Love this video

We attack the rich for being greedy and tyrannical but they are people just like you and me. We should wage war against greed and tyranny itself as we are all corruptible if put in certain situations. Give a person a badge, uniform and some authority and watch him/her turn. We need to identify the true source of the problem, not just scratch at the surface.

Ram Dass is responsible fo all time favourite metaphor. From memory: "A man is rowing a boat, in fog, on a lake. He sees a faint outline of another boat heading towards him. 'Look out!' 'Move!' 'Get out of the way idiot!' The boats collide. And when the man's up close he sees, there's no one in the other boat. There's no one in the other boat."

@@Liam-tl5nn As we journey, self propelled, through the fog (of life), we imagine the obstacles we perceive to be the work or doings of others, they're the ones obstructing our way. The barriers are external. But the truth is it's ourselves who've set our own course and we've headed for, even gravitated towards, our difficulties. We scream, we protest. But the responsibility is our own. There's no one in the other boat.

I LOVE Ram Dass with all my heart. He continues to touch me as he resides in spirit, he sent me some very hard to ignore messages thru synchronicities and so now I speak directly to him in some of my mediations, I like to believe he is there for me and can be for anyone who calls. He has been instrumental in my awakening since I came across be here now back in 1997. He talks in such an accessible and lighthearted way, so warm and so beautiful. Ahhhh he is just seriously the best. Another great highlight, Russel, seems we have all the same influencers thru the awakening, but I guess we are similar age. Ram Dass, thank you for gracing our world and Rest in Peace sweet man you will always be my guru 💟

@@pauloconnor5850 haha, Are you saying this to a Cuban ? I lived there. The EMBARGO and sanctions applied are NOT THE PROBLEM, we’ve been living under a dictatorship for decades. No freedom of speech, we cannot leave Cuba and we can not make a means due to SOCIALISM AND NOT THE AMAZING AND BEAUTIFUL USA. You don’t know what it is to live in Cuba. So please do not comment. You are merely a socialist who probably lives in the beauty we call USA. We cannot develop ourselves in an impoverished socialist/ communist country which leaves the government wealthy and in power and the people POOR , sick and dead. Do your research and don’t be manipulated by the LEFT. I LIVED the POORNESS. I CAME TO AMERICA THE FREE. Do not come and comment under my comment talking about USA. And try to do some research on how the revolutionary’s and the communism ruined our island and our people. We’ve been suffering for decades this isn’t new. Go live in Cuba. And do NOT GO AS A TOURIST and you will see what I mean. Socialism does not let us advance. We can’t leave our islands or we will be killed and we have no freedom or speech. We do not have the rights to bare arms so there are currently killing us pieces by pieces. Sick and tired of cry baby socialist commenting ignorant shit like this.

One of the most affecting Ram Dass lectures I’ve heard in his one about love. It’s definitely on KZbin. He goes into detail about being in the space of love, how to be in love with someone is to have someone allow you into that space within yourself. I’d love to hear Russell unpack that and bring it to the here and now of the 21st C.

One can love. One can be loved. There is no such thing as being "in" love. Loving something is a form of attachment to it. It is an _obstacle_ to awakening. If you want to experience the oneness of all things, it helps if you avoid attachment to individual things. Same thing goes for identity. You need to avoid "having an identity," adopting an identity. Identity is always _limiting._ it is never liberating.

Yes, nice one Russell and Ram Dass. We’ve had 1984 and Brave New World of Huxley, which presumably still exist in some “forgotten” Worlds. In our Quantum Realms, we have the pleasant possibility of amalgamating Utopia and Dystopia. So called sin and corruption can be treated playfully now and children can be suitably indoctrinated into this. In the words of Supergroup Yes, in Parallels, “We can make Love towards Perfection”. We can never get there but it could be fun trying!

Ram Dass speeches are a bottomless well of wisdom. I Recently came across one that grows more relevant all the time in which he was asked if we are at the dawning of a new age of light or at the edge of Armageddon. He replied that he didn’t know but that it doesn’t matter which it is because the work is the same. The best thing we can do is “quiet the mind to hear more clearly, open our hearts, and relieve the suffering in front of us.” That sticks with me so much.

I had a friend of mine named John Loo. His father was the man that brought acupuncture to America in 1959. I have been controlled to the point, to where I lost my way Russell. Thank you for helping me find it again. Dr Lou is the first person that I'm going to see whenever I get to where I can. Right after I go see my boy wherever he's at. I would really appreciate it if you could find out where he is. Thanks Mr brand. It really means a lot to have a friend like you that actually cares.

Ram’s How Can I help is a important book more so now than ever…. With all the activism and social justice work going on so many people have become just so burned out and anxiety ridden. It’s a great read for all the people out there who are so oriented toward “helping.”

I was Listen to Ram Dass and heard something that seems really relevant to the world circumstances today. " whatever you are at this moment, has to be ready to die and ready to live. Because that is the only thing you can do for how the world is going to come out"

Before I even listen to this video about your philosophy heroes I feel like mentioning one of mines: YOU Russell. I'm still under the amazing spell of your show, Our Little Lives: Shakespeare & Me, watched last night. All I can say for now is we (my husband and I) have been impressed and touched by the beauty of your art & soul 💗 👏👏👏 Thank you for making this an online event. Holding on the our tickets for your show in Toronto (cancelled due to covid) and hope to see you live one day. Take care xx

Russell thank you so much for doing this. It is incredible to see you talking about the same people that have shaped so much of my understanding and world view. I think you are for a lot of people something like a mentor and spiritual friend/guide. Please keep sharing, it is so appreciated.

his book, my bible Be Here Now was a huge help to guide my early adulthood escape to the country, at a time when MDA, horse tranquilizers & shrooms were too popular, seeing friends messed up in bedroom burbs of Vancouver Nightclub. Big love for him and his wisely creative book
