Percy Sledge originally wrote this song on the spot at a music gig after his girlfriend left him for his best friend. It was originally titled "Why did you leave me baby." A few of the lyrics were rewritten and the song was put out as it is now. I always loved the original, because you can hear the pain and anguish in his voice.
