Spot on Dacob. I used to work for a company selling wine and premium cheese before setting up on my own. In our stores i would always make sure to keep three types of parmiggiano (as an example). Staff would be asked to make sure to keep small amounts of the cheaper and the most expensive cheese in stock and always hold a bigger stock of the one in the middle because that’s the cheese I always intended to sell. The two other were only there to make people feel like they made a conscious decision when in fact I had only made the decision for them. This is marketing and we all fall for it. All the time!

I totally remember a couple years back, when they said the whole “harmonizing” bs. They said so people wouldn’t travel to Europe for VAT and so forth. I love that you brought up the point about increasing the classics, so it indirectly pushed people to buy the seasonal pieces. So then Chanel is covering all the bases on selling as much stock as possible. Such a well thought out video.

Funny things is that I thought because those Chanel price increases not many people would buy handbags. Oh boy, I looked in KZbin results yesterday and so many unboxings of bags in the last month 🤦♀️ They can keep increasing prices and people will still buy then just for views. I am 99% sure that many of them would just return them after that but that's another topic.

Dacob, I'm interested in the possibility of you doing a vlog featuring the topic of reprogramming thinking and taking the power back. I said in the comments of one your recent vlogs about the Hermes discussions, that these topics are inspiring more self-reflection about the whys and the hows the brand keeps me lured by their hype. You keep topics so real, beautifully honest, and I would welcome the chance to hear your thoughts regarding the complexities of this kind of merchandising (you know so much about fashion, brands and their tactics, you'd have quite the arsenal to open eyes if you went full-throttle with your knowledge), and how we might better learn to decipher what is "classic" on an individual level - You began touching on this a little at the end of this Vlog, but I'd be so interested in learning your thoughts with the thorny truths displayed front and center. Just like the industry seems to be diluting fragrances - I feel as though the formula that keeps patron's attentions is being diluted, too. I don't know enough to understand the nuances of this, but you sure do. Would you consider it? Or can you recommend reading material that would guide me/us in that direction of better understanding? I won't sugar coat it - I'm beginning to feel manipulated by the brands I once adored. I find myself wondering why it's taken me so long (nearly 50yo) to feel the bite of these particular jaws. I'd love your perspective on this.

You are 100% right in your logic. I am (or was) one of those people who would buy a purse, or a card holder, or another card case for £££££££££ because I wanted to have a piece of the action. For real! I've now sold all of my small leather goods from Chanel. Why? Because I was too scared to use them outside for fear of the logo getting scratched in my bag. How stupid is that, right? If you buy it - USE IT! My house is not a museum - far from it. And I'm a working class South London girl! Love your channel Super Dacob! Keep it coming...

I agree. I work in one B to B European division of a huge electronics multinational that did not so well in 2019 but recovered very well in 2020 during the pandemic. Production and sales were reduced nevertheless we improved our numbers. The biggest reason was reduction on costs with development, reduction with cost with personnel and with costs like business trips, energy, water, printers, stationary and so one. Another reason was that (exactly like in your example of the parfumerie industry) suddenly certain “compromises” on quality standards had to be accepted because there was no way to get the original components. In times of “war” you do not clean your weapons and if you do not have a dog you will hunt with a cat😂.

37:26 This is so true. If I can afford the flap bags I will buy them but since I can't I may just buy something that is still from the brand that I can afford and can actually use. And so I decided to buy the Zippy Coin Purse, a small leather good. However, I did not realize that this is some sort of a marketing strategy for the luxury brands, not only chanel, to earn. Its so good that someone actually pointed it out because this is really happening.
@SL-lz9jr3 жыл бұрын
It’s annoying but true. I buy the smaller cheaper luxury items but I do so knowing it’s intentional marketing. There’s a reason why a Chanel wallet is so expensive for what it is yet if you had the money to buy a purse you’d get so much more for the money. Although, not sure that’s true anymore with the price increases. This is just true for any retail business though. They know many of their customers can’t afford to buy the pricier items so they stock a bunch of more affordable and sometimes easier to produce items. Sometimes that’s their money maker. To me it’s like buying soda and fries with your burger. The burger costs more both in ingredients and time and labor to produce for a restaurant. Slimmer margins. But the fries and soda in actuality costs less in those same variables (cost of ingredients, time, labor). Aka higher profit margins. So they want you to buy more of these items. Marketing is so slick. I should’ve studied marketing psychology

You can’t compare percentage price increases unless the base price is the same!!! If you have a $1000 bag... it can go up 50% and it’s still only $1500 compared to a $5000 bag that goes up 10% is now $5500!! To do this comparison you have to first calculate that the first bag is only 20% of the second bag.... then compare the percentage increases.
@SuperDacob3 жыл бұрын
Not so simple Libby. What you forgot to factor into your calculation is the market value of any given brand. Some brands are more desirable and higher on the list than others. In this case CHANEL being much higher than YSL on the brand desirability scale so this factors into perception: all of a sudden to some people the 3000 Euro price tag for a mini CHANEL seems acceptable and Ok but to the same person a 1000 Euro price tag for a YSL mini LouLou seems too high and does not seem acceptable. Simple math does not EVER factor into marketing logic and logistics.

Hi Andrea. I’m surprised by your comment because you maybe missed it but at 7:16 he says « These price increases weren’t just happening since the pandemic began. These price increases were going on for decades. And in particular for Chanel, they started really happening big time from 2015 when they had their first TWENTY % price increase. They called it back in 2015 « harmonising » the prices worldwide »... « so these price increases... have been going on 5 years already before the pandemic was even a thing »... He then said at 26:55 « Chanel has been consistently upping their prices in their bags since way before the pandemic, since way before social media was a big thing. AFTER Instagram became a really big thing Chanel’s price increases became QUICKER in nature. You know, all of the sudden it wasn’t ONE price increase every two years, it’s like ONE EVERY HALF A YEAR... or even QUICKER in some cases. Their shoes like their sling backs, LAST YEAR they went up in price THREE (he emphasises it with his fingers and the number 3) times » So imo he basically said what you wrote: fast = 2-3 times a year, furious= up to 20%. So it’s like you’re agreeing with him actually, no? Have a lovely weekend.

@@SuperDacob ❤️🌹Thank you sweetheart for making my year with your reply🥰. I hope young people take your invaluable advice into account. Hopefully new clients who venture into Chanel will have a bit more clarity so that they can make an informed decision when purchasing items. No one should be pressured into spending their hard earned money just to build a relationship in order to be offered a coveted CF or Caviar Mini. Wished I had your advice back when I started down this rabbit hole that is Chanel. I allowed myself to be treated terribly by Saks Fifth Ave SA’s to the point where I returned my purchases. The manager felt horrible and offered me 10% off the 15A red reissue in size 225 ($4,900 usd + tax) as well as triple points that amounted to $525 in rewards points. So I purchased my reissue for an amazing deal $4,801 usd and never purchased anything from them inside Saks 5th Ave Chanel again. I was trying so hard to build a collection so that I could pass it down to my little girl ( who isn’t impressed in the slightest by the way 😂). I now have a reissue, small cf thanks to your influence 🙏 and six caviar minis that I worry will never be able to fully enjoy in this lifetime. I forgot to mention that I adore your beautiful and unique Chanel collection. And I too stopped purchasing from them in 2018. I found the entire process of begging for caviar minis so daunting.

They are going to have to stop raising prices at some point surely? Will people still buy them if they cost over $20 000? Or even higher?

« Because they want you to buy the little tiny double Cs earrings with the crystals that fall off » 😂😂« Keeping it very real here, okay, this is no shade to anyone » 😂😂😂 Honestly Dacob all these very small YTers or the ones with a few thousands (under 10k) followers that I see commenting on EVERY lux videos of the 63636th unboxing of multi pochette or Chanel 19 or whatever I never see them in your comment section. They are not ready for the truth. They always criticise the length of your videos or the pauses. But I am here for the lengthy speech and for the pauses. Your video require an open mindness and self reflection that just a few of us are capable of. The way you deliver your content and knowledge is better delivered than any politician who require a whole team to train him/her about how to speak in front of an audience. I just love all your content. Shades or no shades.

Am i the only few who thinks YSL is better or at par in terms of quality and value for money compared to Chanel?
@em84c3 жыл бұрын
YSL is definitely better value but Chanel just has that SOMETHING. They are more desirable. I've wanted a Chanel classic flap since I was a teenager. I could get a similar looking bag from YSL but it just wouldn't be the same. I'd still want a Chanel. I will probably never be able to afford a Chanel though. I have a love/hate relationship with Chanel. I love their products but hate them as a company.

Very interesting! I am always amazed by these "what you gonna get for 500 or 1000" videos from luxury brands and its like a small pouch you can fit 5 cards into and they actually recommend them. No thank you. Save your pennies for smaller designers. I get the appeal of say Chanel but they are ripping you off with the smaller stuff.

Why doesn't Chanel sell their clothing, shoes or bags online?

You are right. They are excellent marketers. I wish I was that smart. I was saying to myself that I would buy a Deauville and a Trendy CC for just a bit more than a classic flap. I sell a product and I wish I could come up with clever marketing like Chanel.

Dacob. Do you think Chanel will one day move into the e-commerce world in regards to bags, slg's, jewelry, etc?
@SuperDacob3 жыл бұрын
That is a perfect question MNicole. They have plans in the works since many years of moving towards the online commerce but each time they are about to bite the bullet, they change their minds and think some more about it. I think they dread the day when they will go fully e-commerce but they also know that not going fully online might be detrimental to them long term. Its a very delicate balance and they might be even more cautious now that Karl is no longer there and they are still looking at how Virginie will perform long term...

Also Dacob to say Great Britain is isolated from the rest of the world is a fallacy, I’m Danish and I study in Britain. The EU has just created the biggest trading deal in its history with Great Britain, Britain’s Government has just passed over 100 trade deals in this year alone. I don’t know where you’re getting your information from but leaving a trading bloc≠isolation. Very problematic for us Europeans to here.

@SuperDacob3 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrea. That is not what I said dear. Let me clear that up for you: The price increases have been going on for decades, since the eighties in particular, but the 2015 price increase (which I cited clearly in my video) was particularly important for CHANEL because it marked the era of the bigger percentage price increases of up to over 20% at a time and that several times a year. Steady price increases since the early eighties and major price increases since 2015. Simple. xoxo

I do not like the bags made in Italy. Although I adore Italian things. I bought my first couture bag obviously at rue cambiar on. When I go to Chanel with my special bag they admire it. I get amazed as they are used to Chanel. But it is special because it is a couture one, only sold at rue carbon.

Dacob i agree 10000% with everything u said… except .. and maybe that use to be the case back in the days but not now.. Chanel increases on seasonal pieces frequently too.. for example- the chanel mini top handle in rectangular… first introduce in feb/march in Caviar leather only (as far as know) and now have gone up in this July increases. March was 4300 usd and July is now 4800 usd. Nothing has change as far as the style of the bag. Its is no longer offered in Caviar and is only available in lambskin and yet they want to raise it a whooping $500.00 for the SAME bag(imo caviar was better) in lambskin. 😬😬🙄🙄🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️ like you said, as long as its popular n everyone(yes including ME 😆😭) keep buying, u bet ur bottom dollar they gonna up upp UPPPPPP that price, doesnt matter if its classic or seasonal, if they can get away with any increases they WILL… Stay heathy and keep posting videos ♥️♥️
@SuperDacob3 жыл бұрын
The chanel mini top handle is not a seasonal bag dear. Its a carry-over. The moment a bag is in production for more than one or two seasons, it is no longer a seasonal bag. Don’t confuse the iconic classics and the carry overs with seasonal bags: double flaps and 2.55’s being iconic classics and the top handles, coco handles, 19s, Boys, Gabrielles and Co. being carry over pieces. The seasonal bags are bags with special shapes which get produced only for one season and then retired. Xoxo

Hi Dacob! Just a little note, the small size was not the one w/biggest increase, it was the m/l, jumbo and maxi sizes😉. Yes! as we all know Chanel will not sell online, but ppl were able to buy remotely during pandemic, I know this because I was one that contacted several CA’s to purchase my bags. So IMO, in a way it’s like buying online;). It’s always nice to watch your videos, I agree with many of your points, and respect everyone’s opinion but I respectfully disagree with some of yours as well, specially the “stop buying and they will drop the price”. Personally, I don’t think that will ever happens;)I love the brand and will continue to purchase until I feel I have my purse peace and full collection ❤️🙏🏼
@SuperDacob3 жыл бұрын
The "stop the shopping and prices will go down" bit that you state will never happen, will actually never happen because you also state that you will never stop buying... so you actually proved my point Taty... because what I said is that the prices going down will only work and happen if we all stopped buying together. As for the different sizes of the double flaps going up in different amounts... thats because they cost more to begin with... (unless you are not citing chanel prices from just one country. I actually took notes from all different countries and their respective price increase differences, which vary greatly from country to country. Because as you well know, chanel is not just a brand that sells only in the US or only in the EU etc... so it is incorrect to limit these calculations only to your own country. One needs to analyze the bigger picture in this case. I do not disagree with you, I am just stating facts, not opinions. xoxo
