You should do a video on how you deal with time blocking when things fly off the rails (you feel unwell/exhausted, things take longer than you anticipated, you can’t get motivated to do that task, you get interrupted with something urgent, etc, etc) I know Cal Newport has his system for when things go wrong, but I was curious what your system was.

Yes!! Would love this as well. It’s one of the main blocks that prevents me from picking up blocking. Bc once this happens like… then what. Was all the planning for nothing. Having to replan sounds like hell😭😭
@alexislee43793 жыл бұрын
Hi! A fellow time blocker here. I use a similar method to Beatrice, where I use iCal, but instead of having another app (Teuxdeux in this instance), I timeblock my to-dos straight away into iCal. iCal makes it super easy for you to drag and drop events easily, drag the timings if it becomes too short on too long. It's especially easy on the laptop. I find that only using iCal helps me to change my timeblock much easily because I only need to use one app. And just one app is probably what you need if your schedule changes very often. Also, you can categorise the events into different calendar colours so that's been really helpful for me.

High energy / low energy routine has been super helpful. Somethings just can’t be skipped on low energy / disrupted days ,yet, others can be delegated or done half ass , done another time or skipped all together . A backup routine (social for example : on a low day for example i might push for a movie and pizza rather than dinner and drinks or dishes just have to be done but not put away on low energy days …… 🤷🏽

Doesn't it feel overwhelming sometimes or is it more organized because you know what to do?
@Julia-ig7qm3 жыл бұрын
I’ve been doing weekly planning for almost a year now, and in my experience it actually helps everything to feel less overwhelming. You end up allowing your brain to worry about completing those tasks instead of remembering what you have to do as everything is already written down. The only thing that can be overwhelming is if the weekly routine is too long, mine took 2h when I first started and since then I was able to cut it down to 1h because it was just simply too much time and I was avoiding it because I didn’t want to spend so much time planning haha. One other thing is that it’s really easy for everything to crumble if you miss a week of planning (and don’t take into consideration that can happen). Because of that I start planning on Saturdays instead of Sundays (my week starts on Mondays) so that I if I miss planning on Saturday I still have Sunday to plan everything. If you’re just starting it’s a long process to find just the right planning routine that works for you! I started when I watched the bliss bean’s first “how I plan my life” video and I literally copied her style haha. A lot of it didn’t work but it was a good starting point for me to have a solid base and build my own planning style from there! Hope this helps ♥︎

Agree with Julia that it makes things less overwhelming! I feel a lot more overwhelmed if I just have a long list of tasks and no plan (or even worse, if it's just a jumble of thoughts in my head). Then I'm constantly thinking - am I forgetting something? What should I be doing now? How long can I spend on this? When my week is planned out I just do stuff and check off tasks 🤗
@not-a-ghost22063 жыл бұрын
@@TheBlissBean aah thanks for the reply😍😍

@@Julia-ig7qm Yes, I agree weekly planning should be short and done regularly! I also agree that weekly planning gives you a realistic outlook of how much you can do with the limited time and energy you have so you don't overwhelm yourself. Actually I have started planning my week on Friday mornings, before I start work. This is because my work is kinda crazy, we often have last minute work that needs to be done on the next Monday and that pushes back everything that was planned out for the next week. So I've learnt to do it on Friday so that I can plan whatever I need to do for the last day of the work week, such as confirming details, preparing the things I need, reorganising my weekends if I need to work overtime. I also plan into the next work week so that I don't miss any deadlines at work. It's either a Friday or Saturday morning for me, so that I can get it out of the way and enjoy my weekend socialising, since my weekdays are stuck working from home and working overtime as well.

Lately I've been using a homescreen on my phone that has a gcal widget above a todoist widget, so I can plan my main 1-4 tasks for the day whenever I feel. The biggest thing that works for me is having themed days so it's regular and I don't have to think about when I'm going to get stuff done - and every theme has a second time block in case I don't get everything done in the first. I tend to do better when I have a single focus, and when I know I don't have to be perfect/get it all done the first time (anxiety). Hope this helps somebody!

How would you track or categorize the “transition” period from one task to another? For example, going to the gym. I drive up to the gym and it takes me 5 min to get out, get situated, and start working out - how should I categorize that? Should I turn on “Gym” tracking task immediately as soon as I pull into the parking lot and park? If not, then how do I transition the time from my car to get started with my first workout after getting situated. I don’t want to say that I worked out for 2 hours when in fact at least 30 min was taken up by going to the locker room putting my stuff us, hand washing, etc… Same when I get home from my drive from the gym and into my apartment. Or I get home and stopped at my apartment leasing office to check the mail. Where or How should I log my time? I log my “drive time” but once I get to my destination and trying to get into the house and get situated takes a few minutes to put my things down, etc…Should I just put everything into the “break” or what? Any tips or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Just wondering, why do you have all of your tasks in both ical and teuxdeux -- isn't it the same list and same order? why do both?
@TheBlissBean3 жыл бұрын
Nope! They're not quite the same, because TeuxDeux is for tasks and iCal is for time blocking. So I might have in TeuxDeux "call optometrist" "schedule manicure" and "email video link". These are super quick tasks that I would not create specific time blocks for in my calendar, that would get too messy. Similarly, a time block might be something pretty general, like "finish video", but in TeuxDeux I have "finish editing video", "design thumbnail", "send link to video", etc. Hope that helps!
