My roommate bites! That's what it's like living with a pet tarantula. Why would you do it? What kind of Spider Sense is this? Deborah Blum thinks it’s a great idea. She’s a student at the University of Georgia and wanted some company in her first apartment. Dogs, cats and goldfish were too boring and ordinary. Her father is an entomologist and gave her a tarantula as a house-warming present. Sasha is a Texas brown spider. Sasha and Deborah became the perfect roommates. In case you are wondering, Sasha is a poisonous spider, but her bite isn’t fatal. Still, there were no arguments over the TV remote. They just hang out when Deborah studies, eats and all the regular stuff. Deborah told me that her giant spider is easy to care doesn’t smell and won’t wake you with barking or meowing. Sasha can live for 20 years. I asked Deborah if she would ever give up her spider. She told me if she was going to get married, she would most likely choose between a husband or a tarantula.
THE REST OF THE STORY: Today Deborah Blum the director of the Knight Science Journalism program at MIT. She is a Pulitzer-prize winning science journalist, and the best-selling author of six books. Living with Sasha must have given her some insight on venomous creatures. Deborah has a long-standing interest in poison, in our everyday lives, in our history and in far too many murders. This story aired on WSB-TV Channel 2 Action News in 1975.
