"less noise" doesn't matter, because my dust collector makes so much more noise than my jointer anyway.

Noise is cumulative, and very much based on proximity. Having your head right over a cutting operation or in line with the infeed/outfeed of a thicknesser is super loud. Personally I would recommend the use of better defenders than Marius' 25dB. I do risk assessments at my workplace, including noise.

I would say it does, to me at least, and I will also say the volume level between my DW735 compared to my floor standing cast iron jointer is VASTLY different, which I attribute to the motor types and the cast iron vs steel/aluminum/plastic. They both have straight blades but I understand that the shelix would help with the noise but the lunchbox planer is loud even when it's just free-wheeling.

Another plus of the carbide cutter heads is that when you do get a nick, and it always happens, all you have to do is rotate one (maybe two) cutters. Presto, no more nick.

Pretty funny, just last week I've got aware of that cutter head at a KZbin video 😀 That guy said pretty much the same about cut quality and sound but not in such a detail. I'm glad I can contribute a little bit to your new tools.

Great pair of videos, thanks! I am one who touts the noise reduction of helical heads, and I also have found that in the white oak, walnut, and mahogany I usually work with it doesn't make a difference which direction I feed the wood. I confirmed the noise observation with a sound level meter (don't remember the readings now, but it was significant). But I never thought to make feed direction comparison passes like you did and use the low-angle light and fingertips for comparison so there may actually be a difference. Thorough and enlightening, thanks again. And your recommendation was spot on. The most cost-effective way to get a helical cutterhead is in a combo machine when you buy it. Retrofitting will always be more expense and trouble. In the US the least expensive machine of acceptable quality I could find 6 or 8 years ago was the Jet JJP12-HH at $3300. It has been satisfactory in every way. I see that it is $4300 now on Amazon, with free shipping. If I were buying again now I wouldn't hesitate to make the same decision.

After watching both videos, I hope that after all of the trouble and modifications that it took to get the Shelix head installed, it was worth the effort. Judging by your results, though, unless I begin to have severe problems that can't be solved by sharpening or replacing knives, I'll probably stick with the conventional jointer and planer knives...and just slow down my feed rates. Very nicely done videos, though, and thank you for taking the time to assemble and edit them! They really helped me to decide! :-)

Watched both videos and was impressed with your dedication to see the job through. So involved and a lot of money should it have not gone to plan. I can see why you wouldn't recommend the upgrade for the kity 636 and it already is a pretty good combination machine in the first place. I think the helixial cutter heads main advantage comes from not having to resharpen the single blades because you've found metal in the wood. Just turn the damaged insert 90° and you're good to go again.

Next step, as I modified my Kity 637, disassemble the feeding system on the main motor, buy a little motor with a built in reduction (1:12 if my memory’s good), a sprocket and matching chain (I kept the sprockets on the in/outfeed rollers, and bought a longer chain with the same pitch) install a VFD on it (my motor was given to me and was on 400V, VFD allows me to run it on three phases while setting many values such as speed, brake etc...) and you will be able to set the feeding speed from zero to twice the actual speed. Mine is on use since 6 months, and it is so convenient. Full speed for roughing (80 Hz), low speed (25Hz) for finishing on difficult woods with many grain directions.

Marius Hornberger 260mm as yours. It’s just a bigger one, with longer tables, and a built in base, bought for 500€. I was thinking about buying an helical cutterhead since I saw one on a Franck Howart video he installed on his big jointer, but their prices always brings me back to reality (my patreon doesn’t let me ruin the family bank account 😂)... but the separated drive for the feeding system is very handy. I may send you some pictures if you are interested. That may inspire you. Just give me your email if you want.

Dear Marius, regard to one of your previous video, could you specify please here what type of table saw blades do you use on the Hammer K3? How as i see do you have Felder/Silver-series and even Freud discs. Thank you.

I have a Silent Power Diamond blade(300mm), a set of smaller (250mm) Freud blades and a set of Hammer blades (305mm)

Marius, another nice comparison to make is the power consumption: if you plane agressively (wide board with heavy pass), you'll see that the motor's electrical consumption will be quite higher with three blades than with a helix cutter, because the cutting effort is much better spread on the latter one. Would have been interesting to see this in your particular case :)

Currently have a Dewalt 735 planer and an old Craftsman 6 1/8" benchtop jointer, and I'd love a combination Planer/Jointer like this.. I know they're technically not the best at either jointing or planing vs the dedicated tools, but I like the space saving aspect, and like you mentioned, you only have to buy one helical cutter head. Being able to joint up to 12" would be really nice too.

Combination machines can be as good as dedicated ones. Just a question of price :) But mine is only 10"

Aber Marius, Du kannst Dir ja einen Abricht-Dickenhobel von Felder bzw Hammer zulegen, die haben auch die Spiralmesser Hobelwelle. So eine Hammer A3 41A würde auch gut zu Deiner Säge passen 😜👍🏻

Jointing or planing a few boards is hardly a test. Since they have no purpose. The reasons why you had trouble with sticking a after market head in your machine is it now far from how it was designed. You actually down graded it. Lots of hype around the insert head is because new woodworker don’t understand how a knifed head machine was designed to cut wood. Look up hook angle. Then measure the face bevel of the bryd insert and ask your self what does this mean?
