If Paul Simon wrote that song to us all as a warning, as most people think it is, THIS was the rendition he had in mind if that warning was ignored.

I'm always comparing the simon and garfunkel version to like someone tapping you on the shoulder and telling you this, while this version wil grab you, push you in a chair with David pointing at you going 'you're going to listen this time!'

Paul Simon took six months to write the lyrics, which are about man's lack of communication with his fellow man. The author sees the extent of communication as it is, on only its most superficial and "commercial" level (of which the "neon sign" is representative). There is no serious understanding because there is no serious communication - "people talking without speaking - hearing without listening". No one dares take the risk of reaching out ("take my arms that I might reach you") to disturb the sound of silence. The poet's (character in the song) attempts are equally futile (" . . . but my words like silent raindrops fell within the wells of silence"). The warning comes as how people worship technology as a religion “people bowed and prayed to the neon god they made” (In the 60’s that was TV, today how many people do you see bow to their cell phones?) The ending is an enigma. The words tell us that when meaningful communication fails, the only sound is silence, that graffiti on the subway walls and tenement halls holds truer meaning than the psychobabble on TV or the people yelling at each other in the streets. This song, written 50+ years ago, is more poignant than ever in today’s world.

Paul Simon did write this song as a warning!! It was a sweet way of trying to tell us to listen to each other....WE DIDN'T LISTEN....So Disturbed sang it in a sweet way at first but at the end he sang it angrily so that hopefully we will listen now, or else we will destroy mankind by not listening to each other. LOVED YOUR REACTION and comments.

The song requires a degree of context from 1963. Paul Simon was an introvert young man who had the habit to go to the bathroom and let the water running i the dark for inspiration, this is the reason on how the song starts. " Hello Darkner my old friend.".. At that time Paul was reacting to television and the new era of presenting to people things that we were not undertood and people were following them, and more people was bowing to these distractions created by the Gods that were made for us to follow. Very powerful and still current for this era of socila media where we are more distracted and isolated and following the neon lights and bowing to the gods someone created and not looking to find the our inner peace or soul silence.

Hello darkness, my old friend I've come to talk with you again Because a vision softly creeping Left its seeds while I was sleeping And the vision that was planted in my brain Still remains Within the sound of silence In restless dreams I walked alone Narrow streets of cobblestone 'Neath the halo of a street lamp I turned my collar to the cold and damp When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light That split the night And touched the sound of silence And in the naked light I saw Ten thousand people, maybe more People talking without speaking People hearing without listening People writing songs that voices never share No one dared Disturb the sound of silence "Fools" said I, "You do not know Silence like a cancer grows Hear my words that I might teach you Take my arms that I might reach you" But my words like silent raindrops fell And echoed in the wells of silence And the people bowed and prayed To the neon god they made And the sign flashed out its warning In the words that it was forming And the sign said, "The words of the prophets Are written on the subway walls And tenement halls And whispered in the sounds of silence"

If you think this is good, the Disturbed version is just as good, but the Pentatonix version is the best of all, you really need to watch it. To follow up with another commentor, the orignal was a warning, the Disturbed was anger because the warning was not heeded. But the PTX version shows there is still hope for humanity.

We live in a world of fear. People fear that which they don't understand and unfortunately far too many people lack the courage to face their ignorance so they can understand. They talk without speaking and they hear without listening. Humanity has become selfish self-centered and self-serving and it hides behind the fear it has created.

Created by Art Garfunkel and Paul Simon, the song has an interesting story behind it - one that concerns Art Garfunkel and his close friend Sanford Greenberg. The friendship According to Greenberg, the song was a tribute to his strong bond with Garfunkel and the latter’s sacrifice, which ended up providing comfort to Greenberg when he lost his sight. Greenberg and Garfunkel met in their first week at Columbia University. It was Garfunkel who initiated the contact, coming over to say “Hi.” Soon, the two became roommates and found that they shared a common interest in music and poetry. The two young men made a pact to always be there for each other when faced with trouble. Just months later, Greenberg lost his sight. He was watching a baseball game when he experienced his vision becoming cloudy. Soon, he could only see darkness. Though the doctors diagnosed that he was suffering from conjunctivitis and the blindness would soon pass, it did not. It was later found that glaucoma had destroyed Greenberg’s optic nerves. Since Greenberg came from a simple home, his family did not have the money to help him out. As such, the young man dropped out of college. A baseball game as though seen through a telescope with the image in the middle and darkness surrounding it. Psychologically, he was intensely depressed. Greenberg stopped talking to people and isolated himself. It was then that Garfunkel came to him and talked Greenberg into going back to Columbia. After much insistence from his friend, Greenberg agreed and enrolled in the university once more. In college, Greenberg was completely dependent on his friend. And Garfunkel changed his life at the university to accommodate his blind friend, helping him walk to class, tending to wounds, walking together in the city, filling out forms for him, and so on. Garfunkel called himself “Darkness” when he was around Greenberg, a sign of empathy toward his friend. One day, Garfunkel told his friend at Grand Central Station that he had to immediately leave for an assignment. Suddenly, Greenberg was left alone in the crowd, completely terrified and not knowing what to do. He somehow managed to get back to the university, bumping into people and things. Greenberg calls it “the worst couple of hours in my life.” At the university, Greenberg bumped into a man who apologized to him. He recognized the voice - it was his friend who had just left a few hours back for an “urgent assignment.” In fact, Garfunkel had never left Greenberg’s side. He merely lied about it and followed his friend all the way back to the university. Garfunkel wanted Greenberg to realize that he could only be independent when he was truly in charge of his life. It worked and Greenberg became more confident about relying on himself. The two friends graduated from college and went their separate ways. A few years later, Greenberg received a call from Garfunkel who wanted US$400 to record an album with his musician friend Paul Simon. Greenberg only had US$404 in his bank account but gave all the money to Garfunkel without a second thought. He felt that it was time to repay the kindness Garfunkel had shown to him during college. With the money, Simon and Garfunkel recorded their first album “Wednesday Morning, 3 AM” in 1964. The album turned out to be a flop. With money from Greenberg, Simon and Garfunkel recorded their first album ‘Wednesday Morning, 3 AM’ in 1964, which included The Sound of Silence. With money from Greenberg, Simon and Garfunkel recorded their first album ‘Wednesday Morning, 3 AM’ in 1964, which included ‘The Sound of Silence. However, one song from the album stood out - The Sound of Silence. In the following year, the song rocketed to the number 1 spot. Though Simon wrote the song, the lyrics to The Sound of Silence are filled with Garfunkel’s compassion as “Darkness,” Greenberg’s “companion” ever since he went blind. This can be seen from the song’s opening lines: “Hello darkness, my old friend, I’ve come to talk with you again.” Simon and Garfunkel went on to have huge careers. As for Greenberg, he became a successful businessman and set up a US$3 million prize to find a cure for blindness.

Let's break down this emotional carnage shall we, I don't want to get your names wrong so to keep it simple i'll refer to you ladies as; left (L), Center (C) and right (R) chicks, hows that.. @ 2:50 and the next ten seconds that follow - C chick's first sign of weakness further acknowledged by her head bobbing, meanwhile R chick is fighting it with a clinched chin. @ 3:11 C chick reaffirming who the weak link in the group is early @ 3:33 the real start of the demise begins here, not 5 seconds later C chick once again bobs head in utter defeat, this was a small seemingly imperceptible gesture that screamed defeat, you may as well have been sobbing in the corner somewhere, all the while at about the same time R chick throws hands up and is forced to break eye contact only to come back with a stronger resolve and a look of attitude that was not bound to last. @ 3:51 we reach our climax where both C & R chicks are showing full blown weakness as they're touched in the feels feels and for the next 15 seconds or so all manner of watery eyes, head bobbing, brief yelling and lack of eye contact happens. @ 4:14 and the next ten seconds that follow we see signs of the inevitable for C and R chicks @ 4:23 & 4:52 we get our closure and final confirmation of breakdown from R chicks defeated status Finally folks I've come to the conclusion the L chick is a savage G slayer with no feelings watching her sisters get dismantled as she just endures it all, not a damn dust ball in her eye to get that shit a little moist. the end.

Related to this rendition I will recommended the next rendition, kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5Cle5SDYrqljsU . Some remarks: the man is siting, is over 60 years old and his profession is opera singer. BTW. It’s worth it to investigate this beautiful tv show (Beste Zangers , Liefde voor muziek, Sing Meinen song, etc.) which already 14 years old and is to see in six different country’s. This show is all about enjoying, pay attention to the music of each other and encouraging each other. Enjoy your musical discovering of the European music

I love this version..editorial credit:Carlo Romeo...✔️ To sum up, the key message of The Sound of Silence is that we never have to stay quiet and we should not be afraid of speaking out, both in our personal and our social life. The way towards a better society passes through effective communication, which is essential to draw attention to our needs and to demand justice and decency for all. To accomplish this, we should be careful with everything that can alienate us, leading us to think of ourselves only as individuals rather than as members of a worldwide community. In a nutshell, this song reminds us to avoid the neon gods our daily life is littered with, which can trick us into selfishness and indifference.
