It's sad that as a voice teacher, she can't break free from the her bias and truly appreciate how wonderful this cover is and how it stands on its own from the original. Even Simon and Garfunkel loved the cover and directly contacted David to congratulate him. One of the most common comments I've seen about it is how much impactful the lyrics are in this version and how they never truly paid much attention to them until the heard this cover. Both versions are unique and beautiful in their own right. Personally, I prefer this version. The musical arrengement alone is beyond majestic. "It taps into a specific niche" - You weren't able to shed your bias on this one. This song is ~wildly~ popular, across multiple genres. As is often commented, the original was presented as a prophetic warning of sorts, while Disturbed has returned with the song as a sort of battle cry against the warning having been ignored.
@timfleming6962 жыл бұрын
Richard Reid ,as I have mentioned in past comments I'm not personally aquainted with either Paul Simon or Art Garfunkel that I could definitively speak on precisely what meaning they intended to convey to listeners as the lyrics were being written to sound of silence. However, I really think that your observation that the original was evoked and sung with heavy overtones of the prophetic while the arrangement by disturbed was something akin to a battlecry or ,if I may offer , a despairing rant ,at an entire generation of souls that failed to heed the warning implicit in the first prophetic offering is as insightful as it gets . A distinction that I've only heard mentioned for the first time by you. Thank you for that keen insight.

Wow, You totally missed this song and the performer's artistry. Lower, deep chest, relaxed baritone beginning. His haunting/ emotion filled sound while keeping the music to just a piano. His smoothness in transitioning from an e to an a then putting a fry on top of his voice. The addition of layers of strings and drums. Did you know he had the flu during this performance? With over 30 years of running sound board in studio and live performance, the amount of effects in this performance is minimal. The mixing of instillments was masterfully done by the sound engineers. It may not be your style of music but you can not downplay the quality of his version. A little FYI, When Disturb released The Sound of Silence, Paul Simon linked it on all his social media platforms.

"The mixing of instrumentals was masterfully done by the sound engineers." I agree to a point, the guitar is almost non-existent, stuck way in the back ground. Even if you don't personally like this rendition of the song, as a voice teacher you should absolutely love what he is able to do in this song and the voice control he has throughout to put the rasps in at decreasing intervals until the final verse, when he just lets it all out. He conveys the message that Paul Simon wanted to convey in the original in a way that Simon and Garfunkel would have never been able to do. I love Simon and Garfunkel's version as well, but this version simply stands on its own, while paying homage to the original throughout.

I think your statement about listening to it again was an excellent idea. Constantly pausing the song (while completely understandable for a reaction video) leaves out the overall impact of this piece. An homage to a cherished classic with over 40 years of popularity, sung by a highly skilled musician with tremendous power, range and ability expressing his vision of the song in the present deserves an uninterrupted experience. I applaud your decision to do so.

I understand everyone has there own opinions and preferences, but when you cannot listen for a moment and let go for a moment. Let go of the original for just a moment and listen to his amazing voice and the message that was originally told is now not just a quiet warning. Disturbed made people listen and perhaps wake up to what is happening all around us. I love watching reactions to this cover and I am sad to say I have never given a dislike until now. I totally understand and appreciate your honesty. I started College when the original song came out in 1964. One of my favorites. However, I found this arrangement and the growling to be very powerful. I think people who love this version, and I do, are hearing the entirety of the SONG and styling rather than focusing on the voice, as a voice coach is apt to do. Your struggle was noted and kudos for the effort. 🙂
@patrickmulligan89285 жыл бұрын
I think he added his emotions and twists in the song because there's the same types of moral complacency that Simon and Garfunkel wrote the song about initially still going on today. It's difficult not to feel isolated, and then not to get seriously "disturbed" by it, pun intended. 50 years after it was written, we have the ability to connect with each other in a nano-second, yet we're as divided as ever.
@Quantari3 жыл бұрын
Yeah yeah, it's a year later, but I just started watching these voice teacher/vocal coach reacts to this song. I can see why people are accusing you of being unable to get over your bias. Every other vocal coach, vocal teacher, etc. review is actually able to focus on the technical aspects of David's performance- his rich resonance, his flawless control and near perfect vocal fry without overdoing it, the way he can add power to his voice without effort, and -that's- what impresses them. They can see that he's a classically trained singer who is pulling off traditionally difficult feats with ease, and in doing so, can deliver an emotional song that perfectly encapsulates the emotional intent of the original. This includes vocal coaches who love the Simon & Garfunkel original. Unfortunately, yeah, you were already so focused on it not being Simon & Garfunkel that it was all you could think of, and that was basically the backdrop for every comment you made- "this isn't what I'm used to." Of course it's not. You didn't even recognize that the scrunched up face during the vocal frying is something that is done to bring the sound away from the back throat space and move it up front, where it will do less damage to his chords. You just made fun of it as if it was just showmanship, when it was actually a valid and recommended tactic for trained singers to do. It kind of makes me trust you a bit less as a voice teacher, particularly one who brands herself as someone who isn't judgmental. You were so judgmental you forgot to actually consider his talent and skill, and tried to save face in the video desc with "even though I think it's good stuff." Disappointing.

Oh Boohoo. Did the mean woman question the man who made you sentimental with his melodramatic vulgarity? How dare she?! She tried to express herself with caution. That's why she was somewhat apologetic, because she knows that there's a lot of cry babies like you who will actively display all kinds of aggression because their feelings are just _so_ important. Not just for their own infantile egos, but for *everybody* whether they want it or not. I have news for you: She didn't actually dislike it because it's not the original. She disliked it because it's pompous crap. So much so in fact, that it borders on the parodical.

This song is brilliant. First, kudos to Paul Simon for writing it. He was a visionary when he composed this song in 1963. His audience was a very different audience 57 years ago, but he saw the handwriting on the wall. I love the original version by S&G. Secondly, David Draiman / Disturbed took that song and brought it into the 21st century. He has an incredible voice and he sang it with powerful control and emotion... he expressed in one song the 57 years of frustration over the empty, unshared, silent existence most of us are living in 2020. People talking without speaking... people hearing without listening... I can’t think of a better way to describe this wasteland of a world. For a “voice teacher” Ms. Oren didn’t even analyze/critique Mr. Draiman’s incredible vocal range and control. She should have declined to review this on the basis of her closed mind and inability to offer a fair review of this modern rendition of Paul Simon’s incredible song.

Written as a protest song for our day, this version by Disturbed significantly displays the difference between the era then and now. This particular rendition just wasn't doing it for me either. Music is like food and while there are objective qualities to be commented on, and popular opinion is relevant in many ways, at the end of the day the subjective experience of how the music feels or how the food tastes is primary to all of us. Everyone has their own experience of this, of course, and we should all remind ourselves of this. I doubt this singer himself would take any personal offense to her interpretation, like a great chef isn't going to mind if one person doesn't prefer his dish. It doesn't make that person wrong or offensive in any way, especially when they are so polite and diplomatic about stating the opinions that you've essentially asked for.

Sad you didn’t see this song from his perspective, he delivered that song with its true meaning. i see a lot of cover when they sing the original song which they can’t own. This man took this song and owned it like it was his very own. That’s the art of music he introduced new colours to paint his picture and the message he was delivering. His range and announcing of words is done to perfection, you can pick up the word “sound” which is by the book and the word “silence” which he mastered. Something most people don’t recommend doing. That’s what I should expect a voice teacher to breakdown

The problem you are having with Disturbed's version is the emotional aspect that all renditions of this song seem to invoke in the listener. Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel's version is rather intimate and feels one on one. It invokes a feeling that everything will get better. Disturbed's version invokes the feeling of being lost and ignored. It takes the listener to a darker place where the feeling of loss cuts deeper. It exposes the anger that we all feel at some point or another. Both versions have/had their place in their eras. This one is for the era where everything is raw and fresh.

UNFORTUNATELY - you failed miserably this time around because you KEPT the blinders on. I’m quite surprised that a renowned vocalist and vocal trainer such as yourself, who has changed the arrangements of some of the songs you have covered, is critical of this version. Disregard the bias, YES DO THINK ABOUT IT. Remember that every artist has a musical interpretation of certain pieces. You kept mentioning “this was a show, for the show”. Watch the official video, discover the band won a Grammy award for this version and, as a previous subscriber mentioned, Paul Simon loved this version. If I’m not mistaken, he presented the Grammy to David Draiman. In every reaction video I’ve seen, the vocalists were critiqued on the their vocal ability, not arrangement, not song choice, but how well they could or couldn’t sing. I’m just being honest. I do watch all of your reviews, I love them. I just feel in my heart the total reaction was missed, other then you didn’t like the arrangement and that put you off through the entire performance. I encourage you to watch the official video, listen to it without pause, I think you might understand it better.
