About the SOFTWARE I use in the video: A huge amount of my production involves Adobe CC (my affiliate link tinyurl.com/v7fvqgo) I use Adobe photoshop, After Effects, Premiere, Audition and sometimes Animate. I would be nowhere without these softwares. You can get them all with a comfortable monthly subscription, or you can get subscriptions to individual plans. Check them out and see what works for you. The main software I'm using to actually animate frame by frame is called TVPaint. Here's more information on that: www.tvpaint.com/ It's a great software :) And if you need a Graphics tablet, I highly recommend this one for you ballers out there: geni.us/vy8xUZB It's the best tablet money can buy :) And here's a great low-low cost alternative: geni.us/LLYv

My advice in tv paint is to make a ~2500x1600 pixel project, and then make a 1920x1080px camera. You will get a full HD frame and a bigger workspace. Hope its helpful.

This is good advice. I almost always work in an overscale project size , even when my final output will be 1920 x 1080 . In TVPaint when you go to create a New Project you have the option to Create Project With Camera at 200% scale (or whatever you want) , so the project size will be 3840 x 2160 , giving you a larger canvas to work on. But the camera view will still be 1920 x 1080 . Keep your work composed inside the 1920 x 1080 camera field , but you have all that space outside the 1920 x 1080 field , which means you can adjust the camera position , even zooming-in slightly without losing any sharpness on the images.

Recently I've been starting every new project I do in Toon Boom Harmony because of their drawing tools as well as their Shift + Trace capability...but immediately after starting I find myself throwing my hands up and going back to Flash. The ability to composite in real time via their symbols is one of the benefits of animating digitally even though I try to make my work look as traditional as possible. For me, drawing in bitmap based software is like drawing with a pencil. And animating with Flash is like drawing with a sharpie. I've accepted that I'll just have to get really good at drawing with sharpies. Good stuff as always, dude. Cheers from across the pond.

I'm pretty sure at least most of Howls Moving Castle was made on paper with copious amounts of pencils. At least the main character animation. So I'm also quite dubious of that guy attributing the animation of that film to any software. I've heard they use Retas but only for ink and paint jobs. And in behind the scenes materials I often see After Effects used for comping. But as you said, it's irrelevant. If you know the principles of animation, you can animate in pretty much any medium and tool. Or as the great writer Garth Marenghi said: "I think what this episode shows above all is that the human spirit cannot be overcome. You know, as a writer, if you took away my paper, I would write on my heart. If you take away my ink, I'd write on the wind... It wouldn't be an ideal way to work-...."
@HowardWimshurst5 жыл бұрын
Yeah it was mostly on pencil and paper, you're right! I watched the full behind the scenes featurette. Studio Ghibli has always been very reluctant to introduce digital technology. Even when they used digital, opentoonz was just one of the minor softwares, it wasn't responsible for the innovative 3d/2d integration we saw on the castle itself. I didn't want to bring that up because I thought it was overkill + distracted from the main sentiment of the video, but you're right.

Every time when they ask me at my workplace which software i would like to use for a certain 2d project, I say I don't care about it, cuz if it's 2d you're gonna draw it anyway, so i just need something that draws frames, the rest is my job. Thanks for the tutorial ;)

It also helps to be multiple software capable when some certain software drain you of money constantly. Even professional studios have multiple software because they know which one can do what best. It is also great to learn after effects and hitfilm - composition programs because they can also be really useful. I personally been having fun with hi-res pieces that I composite in lower resolution (so 2k or 4k work but in a 1440p or 1080p) because it allows me to do multiple camera angles without having to animate multiple scenes. Software kit or structure can be beneficial for the artist and their workflow but of course craft is not automated.

I think the last comment you mentioned that someone made about Howl's Moving Castle was just bad grammar from them. I think they just meant to say that the studio used OpenToonz while making the film. But you're right, the software doesn't make the animation. But getting a good understanding of the software helps you make the decision as to which software and which tool in the software to use. Great vid bro
@HowardWimshurst5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your thoughts Darren. yes I think you're right, it probably was just poor internet grammar. It did cross my mind at the time, but it still ignited my desire to make the point about software for the video, so it was good inspiration! Yes software does become part of one's thinking and problem solving. You can only work out a problem by using what you already know. The stuff you don't yet know is off limits to your brain. I find that the software I am most used to using defines the manner in which I mentally solve a problem. That being said, too many tools can actually make one's animations worse, especially if the artist lacks the discipline to choose the tools wisely. I see beginners get caught up in wacky tools when they would be better off learning the fundamentals and just using an average brush with frame by frame animation. Beginners also need to learn quickly that they enter into a give-take relationship with the software. The more responsibility / tasks you give to the software, the less creative control you have. Which is why I try to assign the low-creativity tasks (inbetweening, colouring) to the software and retain creative control over the tasks that matter. Interesting talk, thanks for sharing your thoughts!
@DarrenTAnims5 жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree more with all that you've said here. Nothing beats hand drawn animation. The animator is in control and the results, from a good animator, are usually many times better than using tools.

Great overview and appreciate your approach to use what works best no matter what software. Quick question. When you’re doing the hair with the animated brush stroke-how come the timeline doesn’t advance by frames (it doesn’t move from the frame at All) while you are adding hair to his head? The actual drawings are advancing but the timeline doesn’t seem to move off of the one frame? I think it’s around the 11 or 12 min mark.

With regards to hair part, Does tv paint have a 'symbol' like feature ,as in flash, where it is itself a sub-animation loop placed on the main timeline?
@HowardWimshurst5 жыл бұрын
To answer your question, yes absolutely, I am constantly playing my animation back and watching how it looks in motion at the proper frame rate. I tend to cut that out of the recording when I'm editing because it is irritating to look at the animation going past again and again at 10x speed but yes that's what I do. I often stare at it for a long time. Sometimes I just leave it playing on my monitor, walk around, take a break and do other stuff and when it catches my eye sometimes something i didn't see about the animation before is revealed to me in a glimpse.
@HowardWimshurst5 жыл бұрын
And about symbols in TVPaint, no unfortunately it does not have a symbol like feature or a symbol library like flash does. That is one of the things that I think makes Flash very special and one of the reasons that I chose these two scenes in particular to go back to flash during the rough animation stage. TVPaint does have other redeeming features and I have found that together they can make an extremely powerful combination. If you want something even more powerful, I strongly suggest using After Effects in your pipeline if you can afford to. With after effects, you can adjust the levels, have full control over things like blending modes, their tweens are the most powerful and you can even make your layers 3d, which I use quite often.
