This is the video everyone keeps asking me for!
I made a video last year breaking down my pricing model for 2023. As the dumpster industry continues to change, it’s now 2024. And I figured I needed to update/remind you guys on the best pricing model for your dumpster rental business, regardless of the market you are in. So, if you are just starting out or have been in the game as many years as I have, I know there will be a few gold nuggets you can pull from this video. Thanks to everyone for the continued support and trust.

John, thanks for your gritty no-nonsense approach. I wish there was someone like you in my space of equipment rental. Your background and experience definitely lend to the level of quality of the information you put out. Your channel is very underrated. I know you go for less of the entertainment and more for the advice and coaching, and that is exactly why I subscribe. Somehow I think your (what I consider to be) low subscription rate is because your funnel is very niche. Your dumpster rental philosophy and policy is more about "renting to those who fit in the box" so are going to say "no" as much as you say "yes". I happy to be a part of the club that clearly identifies the market. In any case, I wanted to share some insight into how I have integrated your threads into my fabric. I am fully onboard with how you intend to disrupt your market with your pricing model. It would probably be easier for you to just throw your kayak into the river and paddle. I really believe that the way you are trying to disrupt your market actually makes you stand out. In my equipment rental business, I built my pricing to include delivery for all my hydraulic equipment. I believe I'm the only one doing this. I built my model around a 45-minute delivery radius from my base of operations. If I deliver across the street, or 50-miles away, the cost is the same. I came up with my pricing based on the cost to operate the truck and trailer so I could make a profit for the maximum number of transactions that I could do in a single month (I'm still a one-man-band.) My prices are higher than everyone else, but I think if prospects could do the math, they would find that I'm ultimately cheaper than most others that surprise end-users with all types of other mandatory contingency costs. So far, this first full season in business is slow, but call volumes and website traffic are growing at a steady rate and I fully intend to continue my disruptive method in an effort to put service, quality and dependability at the forefront of my message.

Great content as always John! Just a bit of info for your followers running trailers - Rolliskstes don’t work well if you’re dropping off at any kind of angle because most dumpsters aren’t heavy enough to push them with gravity alone. There are cases where us trailer guys have to use boards for underlayment, but I do make it clear that the package is boards and we charge $20 not $40 so it’s a bit easier of a pull to swallow.

Great pricing video John! One of our competitor friends mentioned .10c a pound a few years ago, and I thought it was a funny idea. Now you’ve got ya seriously thinking about it. Especially giving the customer full spending control (respect) and not requiring card on file. I must admit, it’s going to take better communication/ website, but the increased revenue per du Oyster is hard to beat man. Thanks for this one, really. That's the purpose of all these videos I create... to get guys thinking openly and differently than everyone else. I'm not saying this is the only way to price, but its better than what anyone else was doing in my market, so the clients respond favorably to allowing them the full power and control of their dumpster rental, rather than forcing them into the typical and overplayed "flat rate rental." Wow, I theoretically heard the door-slaming in a couple of certain peoples faces a few good times throughout this great video filled with causative information. As the comedian Jerry Clower used to say "Knock' Him Out John; Whoooo doggy!" That dog will hunt. Great, great content John, and this is straight-up and head-on actionable mining for business cost efficiency, utilization of equipment cost, other business cost values embedded, reconciliation of chargeouts and truth in business actions through transparency from the beginning of the details at the website, and then further to include at the end of the rental cycle period. I could almost hear an infamous Mic-Drop at the very end of the video way over here in Northeast Alabama without actually watching the video screen 😁. I thoroughly enjoyed this in-depth video. It is raw enough, straight-on enough, and in-depth enough to be absolutely compound disruptive, but as you already know, the Social Media Trolls have to be kicked in the teeth and placed right back up under the bridge and placed back in check when you knock it over the fence for a grand slam like this. For you guys that have steep mimimums, you could always say that you have a 3,000 pound floor on all your rentals. Or you could charge XX amount for the first 3,000 and XX after that. I would have to play with it a little bit to figure out exactly what works and what doesn't.... but that's what disruption is all about... crack the code that no one else has been able to figure out, and disrupt your market!

Interesting method, charging per pound. I kinda like it. I’d just have to change my website and all my advertising. I’ll have to think about it. Currently I charge by dumpster size and a flat $70 dump fee. Then if it costs me more than $70 I charge the customers card for the overage. So I’m not really profiting on the trash. Just the dumpster. $195 for 10y. $245 for 15y. $295 for 20y. $495 for a 30y. This is in SW Ohio.

I think if you started profiting off your tonnage or landfill fee's.... even if it's just a little bit in the beginning, you'll see what a big difference it makes to your bottom line. This business is too competitive to try and make all your money with just the dumpster and no extras.

Great video. I watched all of it. Im curious about the aspect of making all of the extra profit (which I'm totally all for, and believe that it's better to charge more than less) would turn customers off after a first time buy, and make it harder for repeat customers to stick since they can go elsewhere and get a dumpster for 400 dollars vs paying 50% or even 100% more with the pricing structure. What are your thoughts on that, and did you notice a steady flow of repeat customers or did that change at all in your scenario? I'm already doing very well in another industry, and I am going to likely set up a dumpster business for my family to run to help them have an outlet for success without handing it to them on a silver platter. Thank you, and I love the content!

I moved every business I own away from cash in the last two years. Cash may be king, but not when it comes to protecting myself. I found most customers want to pay "cash" eventually ended be my most problematic clients. It's 2024 and the clients that I prefer working with most just aren't asking or excepting me and my businesses to accept cash. Too many guys that are trying to pay cash are just looking for some type of discount and that's why they continue to try and pay with cash.

John, I know you talked about releasing a video going over how many bookings you get outside your operating business hours - is that video still coming? I’m not in the dumpster business, I’m in the window tint business, but I just like your business philosophy so much and I think the 2 industry’s have the same mind set. No window tint company likes to post the prices on their website, it’s all about “call for a quote” BS, and rarely anyone does online booking. So, my goal is to implement your business practices into my business. Even though they’re completely different categories, at the end of the day they’re both businesses.

Yes, to the booking video showing what time of day / night all my online orders come in. It should be out in the next week or two. Don't be afraid to disrupt that industry. Its 2024, and consumers expect to see pricing. The whole "call for pricing" and "DM for details" only goes so far. I think you are very wise to try some pricing ideas that are different from anyone else in the widow tint space. Best of luck my friend.

in markets like yours, you just need to start playing with different things that can work. I tried several different pricing models in my market because everyone was doing it the same way. Obviously there's downward pressure in your market to keep tonnage charges right at cost. Maybe try moving around your speciality items pricing, maybe play around with the additional day charges etc. The tonnage charges are only one piece of the specialty pie my friend, look into all the other ways that your market can add value and then find how to charge what you're worth for them.

If all your dumpsters are priced the same, how do you keep customers from ordering bigger dumpsters than they need? What if they only fill up a 20 yard halfway?
@samedaydumpster
@samedaydumpster 2 ай бұрын
It happens quite often actually. I look at it like this. If someone orders a 30 cubic yard and only fills it 1/2 it doesn't bother me. First... no chance of an overfilled dumpster. Second, I look at it like this: If I didn't have a larger dumpster to offer them, I likely wouldn't have gotten the rental in the first place. But based on my pricing model, even if they fill it only 1/2 full, I'm still making money within the margins I like. Hope this helps answer your question. Great question BTW.

Good eye, I just did that this past week. It’s simple… we aren’t keeping up with the pickup request. We need our customers to keep the dumpsters a day or two longer to help us efficiently pick up dumpsters. By changing the price down to $19.99 will incentivize more customers to keep our rentals a day or two longer. It’s wasn’t a pricing issue for us, it’s a management and logistics issue. Great question btw. 👊🏾

Based on the numbers you just provided me here Ryan, your total cost to dispose of each ton is $89.31 per ton. So that's your costs. I would strongly encourage you to mark that up whatever amount you feel comfortable and what your market will allow. Don't pass that rate straight thru to the customer for free. You can't run in this business if you don't take advantage of making money on your disposal fee's. That's just my opinion. Thanks for taking the time to check out the channel and watch a few videos, very much appreciated. Drive safely.

What do you charge when they ask for you to dump it and bring it back? Is that like a new rental?

This pricing model can and will work in every market. I would suggest you look at your rate to dispose at your landfill or transfer station and adjust your per pound charge accordingly. Best of luck my friend with your new business.

What’s up SAMEDAY!? I can’t say enough how much I appreciate what you’re doing for the community thank you. I want to ask your thoughts on partnering with someone. I’ve started to develop a small business and have an acquaintance wanting to become partners. Any advice is much appreciated. If there’s anything you need me to do for you I’m more than willing because of how much you’re giving back. Baton Rouge, LA

What's up Greg! I'm currently in Monroe, LA for the day taking care of some business. Love Louisiana. I personally would be extremely cautious of anytype of partnership. Just for the fact that in a partnership one of the partners does considerably more work than the other. It's not always the case, but more times than not. Partnerships are tough... tougher than a marriage by comparison. I would take a very long and serious look in the mirror and ask yourself, why is it you are entertaining the idea. Most likely it's because of money or capital. I understand the draw to that... I really do. But once that partnership "honeymoon" is over, it's tough having one guy do all the work while the other one just barks out orders. I obviously don't know your situation, but I would enter into a partnership extremely cautiously my friend. Best of luck to you.

So how would you charge if we are charged on demo by the yard not weight?
@samedaydumpster
@samedaydumpster 2 ай бұрын
I would adjust my pricing to reflect charges by the "cubic yard" in place of how I'm currently charging by the pound. No reason it would'nt work the same way... just need to dial in your disposal rate per yard, then mark it up to reflect profitability for each dumpster. Curious, what market are you in that charging by the yard Doug?

I'm interested in trying your price model that will make me the only one around here doing something like that but I must be missing something if you are charging the something for every sise why would everyone just order your largest dumster if say 1,000 pounds of junk was going to cost them the same regardless of what sise they ordered ?
@samedaydumpster
@samedaydumpster 2 ай бұрын
It's very simple.... not everyone needs or wants the largest size dumpster. Space consideration, is the biggest reason. Not everyone has the space for a 30 or 40 yard size dumpster on their project. I do a lot of work right downtown SLC where I only have the space of a metered parking stall to set the dumpster. Solid question Jesse, Thanks for your contribution.
