TEDx Talks

9 жыл бұрын

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. What is beauty? What makes someone or something beautiful? It's in everything you just have to see things differently. Take it from the fashion world's newest supermodel.
The fashion industry has a new leading lady, who is serving up stunning images and redefining the global definition of beauty. Chantelle, who was diagnosed at age 4 with vitiligo, the skin condition that was made infamous by Michael Jackson, spent her youth bullied and tormented for her differences. Through all of the vocal and often volatile doubters, she believed her 5’10 frame, modelesque features and internal beauty could see her through to her dreams of becoming an international super model and spokeswomen for others with low self-esteem. At age 16, a local Toronto journalist, Shannon Boodram, discovered Chantelle and shared her story in a KZbin video. The video received over 150k views, as well as features in The Daily Mail and Access Hollywood. Her maturity, beauty and message resonated with fans around the world. Before her 18th birthday, she found herself encouraging people all over the world through her growing social media platforms.
With her emerging success online, the fashion industry began to turn their heads her way as well. Despite being rejected by every single modeling agency in Toronto, designers, photographers and runway directors began to see the beauty that the rest of the world could see. Unrepresented, she was invited to walk in several Fashion Art Toronto shows in 2013. From there, she had several of the city’s top photographers clamoring to capture her. Along her unprecedented ride to notoriety, that same year, America’s Next Top Model producers caught wind of Chantelle fever. After being discovered by Tyra Banks, Chantelle was requested to compete in the 21st cycle of America’s Next Top Model. Even though Chantelle was Canadian and visibly had vitiligo, Tyra was ready to make all exceptions necessary to make a lifelong dream come true for this young girl who refused to be held back by her own skin. Cosmopolitan, Access Hollywood, Buzzfeed, The Insider and MTV all agree that Chantelle is the next IT girl, and anyone in the know can safely rest their hopes and dreams in this new face of beauty as well.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

yes, it's a fact. it happened to me too T.T but like Chantelle Brown-Young said "I didn't ask to have this skin condition" yes, me too, I don't want it. same with my friend's parents, they didn't want their child to have vitiligo like me. yeah but it's painful because actually it is not contagious and I've told everyone. fortunately, my real friend never leave me. I'm lucky to have her in my childhood, my most difficult condition.

I met a guy with vitiligo who had a mustache that was half dark and half light, divided roughly right down the middle. He was wearing a shirt with a design of a mustache on it that was half dark and half light. I'd never met the guy before, but I was impressed by his sense of humour for wearing a shirt like that, so I walked up and told him that I liked it and we ended up having a fifteen-minute-long conversation.

I`ve used several products where I acquired no final results. My condition has been treated by the vitiligo remedy *4VitiligoCure. Com* which gave me excellent outcomes. It was the white spots that started to lighten first until it’s no more visible. I am looking forward to getting rapid results from my other areas of the body since improvement of spots from my hand might take more time. This is a true and tried treatment solution to your condition..

The beauty that grows from a self accepting heart is priceless. And universally recognizable to those with eyes to see. The lesson God painted on Chantelle's skin is that every one IS beautiful. She progressed from victim to bully to finally graduated to real Beauty. Some of us never grow out of our childish victim/bully beliefs. I congratulate her on becoming a beautiful adult.

I have vitiligo but I've had treatment done on it so that it's now completely cleared from my face. No one in school know about my vitiligo because I wear tights and I'm always wearing trousers instead of shorts in P.E. But when I was younger I did struggle with making friends. I felt like a freak and this video made me cry because i felt like understood her.

I also have vitiligo but i've had treatment and now it is less visible.. my skin tone is very clear and so it has never been so visible but when I was a kid, at school, especially if I was suntanned other kids looked at me and they said: "What's on your eyes? Why your skin on your eyes is so white?" I felt really ashamed of my skin and I said to my mama that I wanted to do something to treat vitiligo. My parents spent a lot of money only to cure some little marks, I had to move to Rome every time from Naples (about 230 km) and nowadays on my eyes it's like I have freckles because of the pigmentation.. when I started therapy, in fact, people started to say: "Do you have freckles on your eyes?".. it seemed to me like an odyssey. When I grew up I started to mask my marks with make up and today I can't go out with any make up on my eyes.. your story touched me, I felt very stupid, stupid because of my shame, stupid for all the shame felt only for little marks, your vitiligo is impressive but impressive is your beauty despite of the vitiligo, impressive is the fact that despite of your vitiligo I noticed at first your beauty and your smile, impressive is your COURAGE, the message you want to communicate. I think we are more or less equal in age, I'm twenty but I can see you as a model. Your beauty comes out from your smile, from your words, your beauty is above all inside you.. however you have perfect features, really beautiful eyes and a breath-taking body... thanks Chantelle, you're a wonderful person

Uniqueness is what's attractive.. I have thought she was drop dead gorgeous from the moment I saw her. As a mom to two daughters,11 yr old and 3 yr old, I love seeing ppl like her FINALLY being thought of as good enough and pretty to society. It's one thing to tell your daughters that being unique is amazing but for them to have an actual person to look up to is awesome. Race, ethnicity etc doesn't matter, my daughters and I are white and I have more than raised them to not see color and that's what makes her so awesome.

When I was a kid, my mother was a manager for a resort park for a beach - I was there on the daily after because I just loved it. I made several friends. But there were two girls I remember to this day - I thought we were going to be best of friends and one day I came up to them with a random seagull feather and offered it like "Hey guys, I found a gift!" They looked at me as if I was an insect and completely ignored me. From this day forward, I'll never let people control my happiness.

i think she is unique and she is pretty despite her skin condition. i know how she felt when she said she doesn't want to be bullied anymore. i feel sad for those people who experienced the same. when i was in highschool i was bullied for being obese. the criteria fits, i am from the first class(honor class), i was fat, a loner. but when then when i was in college, in a public school. i decided to lose weight and when i did, i looked great. i stayed fit from then on.

Her skin is like walking art. Our world is so superficial and cruel. The problem resides in those who see with their eyes instead of their heart. They are the ones who need help because their hearts are "ugly".

I once had this best friend and I was at a point in my life where I was really struggling so I told her that I was self harming and within like 2 days she was avoiding me and not taking to me and I asked her what was up and she said that her mum didn’t want her being friends with me anymore and that I was causing problems in their lives so that felt really bad cos she abandoned me when I really needed her the most

If he didn't bleach his skin... think about it, back then, it would have been even more bizarre than bleaching in cahoots with being a biggest star on the planet and the spotlight always on you. Plus everyone knew how self-conscious and hard he was on himself, being the perfectionist that he is. However, he was living in the now, not knowing that his skin condition would've been celebrated later on if he didn't bleach it. RIP MJ

Tachi Rosa The man had tubes of skin bleaching creams in his room at the time of his death. He dangled his kid from a balcony. He lied and say two white kids were his and dyed his son's hair blonde. And lip synched his concerts for over 20 years. Yup.....he was bizarre.
