Yep my 02 suburban 2wd 5.3 has got the same aluminum driveshaft! As for the 2wd in winter part - as long as you have the G80, which you should have (with 3.73 gears) if you have the tow package, you should be fine. Here in NY I only used to use my 4wd when getting in and out of really snowed in parking spots haha, but for any regular driving the truck is heavy enough that with good tires and the G80 you're fine.

Great info and entertainment once again. The thing I like most about your vids is you're extremely knowledgeable but you don't flaunt it. You give great information without sounding like an instructor. Anyway, enough about you. LoL I would actually be more interested in finding out if that is a 4.8. I have a 2012 Silverado with a 5.3, no supercharger, and it has a little more guts than yours does. Obviously I know it's a little bit lighter but just watching how slow off the line the Suburban accelerated was pretty pathetic. What was really strange is how that converter allowed the engine to freewheel a little bit and then engage almost as if it was more of a manual clutch or like the rear tires spun. I don't believe the Suburban has the torque management system like my truck does but that's kind of what it reminded me of. Similar behavior but from different causes.

@Keaos0 Pretty much. The Oil Changes are done from the top on a lot of Mercedes and they use a suction extractor. Some are air-assisted, some are strictly manual. The newer trannies drain from below so you don't need anything to drain because of gravity, but to fill them you need a pressure tank or fill system and adapters. I'm a DIY'er and found an video on youtube where you use a garden fertilizer sprayer and adapt it to fill the transmission. You just have to buy some clear hose and the adapters. Worked very well. Quick tip: On any of these bottom fill transmissions, you have to follow the procedure on filling and check the level at a specific temperature. Also be 100% certain to use the correct fluid with the proper specification. A lot of half assed jobs (pros and amateurs) cause issues after. Oh, and speaking of tools, another one is the clic-r plier to undo and do the hose clips on some German cars (FCA and others also).

When you mentioned “trap door” I was hoping to see some cartel ingenuity done to the truck , my friend rebuilds transmissions and one day he got a call from a guy who bought a navigator from a police impound yard asking to check out a transmission, he said sure and they brought him the suv. He checked it out and the truck seemed like it only had one gear, he thought it was quite strange, considering that he couldn’t manually put it in any other gear , so he started to check pressure on the truck and it had no pressure on the test ports except for one, he thought well that’s odd, so he dropped the trans pan, what he saw shocked him, it had half a valve body and all the inside of the transmission was gutted other than a shaft running thru the transmission. He thought why would someone do this? Long story short , the police apparently found 4 million dollars worth of cocaine inside the gutted transmission and the vehicle was coming from Mexico up to Los Angeles when it got pulled over by chp. The only way they found it was the chp officer had his k9 with him. My friend never did rebuild the transmission he was too scared to even be touching it.

I will say I was shocked at how well my father's 2WD Silverado drives in the snow, probably because it's rocking the G80 locker. Your video shows you have your fleet parked on the street in your neighborhood? Your neighbors must be very understanding b/c even if you were a good neighbor and we were on good terms, I’d still complain about storing your vehicles on public streets - zoning laws exist for these reasons. You might want to get a proper storage bldg/garage facility, be it a larger property with out-bldgs, like Sam C, or even shared space at a B-shop, repair shop, etc. Time to up the ante... IMHO

If your getting a truck in Chicago get a 4x4 unless your gonna sand bag the bed with a few hundred pounds. There’s no weight and your gonna slip and slide. On our 2013 f150 cc sb 3.5l ecoboost we can slip with rain and snow no problem if you get on it. 4x4 for winter unless you will always be towing with a heavy trailer. Just get 4x4, plus boosted 4x4 launch’s. We are in the suburbs and need 4x4 every winter and we always use it. Nicer 4x4 like in our platinum have an auto mode that will slip the transfer case on turns and even turn it off so you don’t get crazy binding even in the dry on sharp turns. Works great and if you wanna lock it in 4hi or lo you can and it won’t slip the transfer case.

@legitstreetcars, I tow a lot of trailers and occasionally a broken car or two, and I also live in the Midwest. 2wd vs 4wd, my opinion: if you're always going to be on road and only maybe very occasionally have to deal with light snow and ice (aka, you can avoid heavy snow), 2wd will be fine with some grippy winter tires. I've towed with fwd, awd, 4wd, and rwd, anytime mud, a hill from a stop, or snow was involved I either had to not tow, reach for the awd/4wd button, or work harder to get out of it. LOL I know you are not nagging ME (been a sub for a long time) I subbed for the Merc builds when I bought a nice W210 2000 E 320. I thought the Wipple would have made more, my KennyBell gives me 500 rear wheel HP and Torque with only 7 pounds on an otherwise stock 5.7 in my Challenger. 375 HP crank to 500 rear wheel is a much bigger boost than the apx 100 you said for the Wipple.

*I think 75% is standard. mine is the same.Used to be only the Suburban's had the aluminum drive shaft. my wife's 98 had aluminum but my 99 tahoe has a steel shaft. i use my 06 escalade EXT to pull with and it has a 4L85E AWD but i pulled things with my 99 tsahoe with the 4L60E also and never had a problem. i've had the tahoe 14 years now and it drives like a champ still. my ACTUAL pulling rig is an 06 Dodge ram mega cab 2wd with the 5.9L cummins turbo Diesel it's a hoss but i drive it empty more than i do pulling simply becaudse i LOVE hearing that turbo spool up all the time. as i told you in our emails back and forth about your escalade, i live in the Nashville area so we do get the cold and snow but nothing like you do up there*

You are right about the subscribers, same on my channel. The 4l60e 3rd gear will eventually fail again. My Suburban with a stroker and 2500 stall could smoke 3rd gear easily. I upgraded to the sonnax smart housing and 6 point planets and it has held together just fine. Don't know much about snow down in Texas lol. These folks in Texas all slide off the road at the smallest bit of ice.

I think it would make a great work truck once the Whipple setup is dialed in. Given the condition of the interior, setting it up almost like a cargo van with no carpet, rear seats, or stereo and Line-X on the floor would be extremely useful, as well as make it lighter for more acceleration/payload. Set it up with a good hitch, 7-pin + brake controller, and some Timbren springs and it'll tow great, too. Add snow tires or three-peak all-terrain tires with a limited slip diff and snow will be no problem; our '85 Suburban growing up in the midwest was 2WD and we had no issues with good tires and a few sandbags in the back.

2wd 450 hp n no burn out hmmmm.... maybe the cats and map sensors air filters spark plugs fuel filters are just dirty or clogged up. I mean it is 19 years old. Who knows what animals or insects have made homes where. Or what dirt or water has gotten in the fuel. The motor wasnt made to be super charged so the plugs could be all fouled up. Sounds like its idling real low maybe the timing is retarded too much? Tune up dyno tube up some colder air. Cuz it should be smoking those tires.
@TheDeadmandillon
@TheDeadmandillon 4 жыл бұрын
Just do the tune up and see where you're at as is. If anything, I'd upgrade the fuel injectors, and the sparkplugs while it's on the dyno. Get a couple more pulls with the new plugs injectors, definitely change the air box out to a K&N cold air setup with the cone filter feeding into the supercharger... And if need be, swap out the pulley on the whipple supercharger and see what that does for you. If the supercharger is still laggy coming off the line, then look into a turbo or intercooled supercharger.

Anyone who says The suburbans aren't "trucks" obviously don't know what a truck is. They are a body on frame truck with shocks and springs for rear suspension instead of leaf springs. Otherwise identical to any pick up.

Have a F350 SD I bought from a friend's dad's estate in Centra Oregon.. It is 4wd, has a Tru-Trac, 4.30 gear rear end, and on BFG All-Terrain TK02 tires. The only downside is that it is a V10, but for what I paid- I can't legitimately complain. Has Gibson headers, SPD Y-pipe kit, Gibson cat- back exhaust, has had the full chain timing set, replaced with Cloyes "Improved design" set, new oil pump, heads & MLS gaskets were fresh, Bilstein B5100 shocks, fuel pump, starter, AGM battery, AC compressor, full aluminum radiator, fan clutch, all pulleys replaced, alternator, brake rotors, calipers, hoses. Even has a Warn bumper & winch. Far beyond what I need, but even with the paint job, bed liner, & nav system it's getting I won't be in it $14k.

I live in northeast Ohio. That truck will get you through ANYTHING. I’ve had 2wd, and 4wd. I plow snow in the winter. 2wd is the way to go. I plow in 2wd, and fight to drive the 20 year old beat to hell GMC we have when I do. It runs circles around the two nearly new dodge rams (2015, and 2017 Ram 2500 long beds) both in maintenance, and reliability. It puts the F350 to absolute shame. That suburban is one hell of a winter beater bud, I’d keep it, and have some fun with it.

Why do my completely innocent, no foul language, no anything other than just point blank normal words about this era truck, getting deleted over and over and over? I can't seem to comment here without it disappearing in an instant. Also, it VERY much is a truck. Also also, watch it actually be @ 4.8 displacement, lol And I tow with my Tahoe... an 05 ... stock with 250K ... tows great, 4wd is great.... ran a 15.8 at the track the one time it was there, lol... so this has to be faster than that! Also have a 99 SS Camaro with an LS1, Cam, stg 3 tranzilla t56 from Rockland Standard, gears, bolt ons, tune.... runs 12.86 on street tires launching @ idle... those 4.10s don't really let you dump it... you spin no matter what, into 3rd and chirping 4th... Pretty sure I can hit dead low 12's with a good launch though, if not 11s. I admire what you have here, it's basically the garage I'd have... If I weren't part of the 99% of the nation making nothing. Well, not nothing, but just enough to get me back to work daily anyway, not enough for anything more. Funny thing is too, I got that car back when I had little in the way of financial burdens. And even now, the house is paid off, etc... This shouldn't be the financial reality for someone who's been a flows and controls engineer, a GC for decades, and who is currently employed by PGS's largest medical outfit, a worldwide entity with massive pull... Yet, they along with everyone else pays as LITTLE as is possible at all times. . . saving the real money for the select few at the top. A world where I could even change the 1-2 syncro in the camaro, or afford to anyway, is a dream world. One where I'm not literally stuck looking at 04/05 vehicles as BRAND NEW, because anything newer is literally unattainable, is crap. . . Ehh.... think I just had an existential crisis... good now though.

The broad category of "truck" includes pickup trucks, body-on-frame SUVs, chassis cabs that become dump trucks/box vans/tanker trucks, body-on-frame vans, etc. People who tell you it's not a truck must think you mean "pickup truck".
