I am not perfect environmentalist either, however I am doing my best here 😌. It is hard with so many influncers these days....H&M, Zara clothing being promoted everywhere. I try to follow minimalist and people that inspire me, like you Mimi 🥰. I mostly buy items from Cos, &other stories and always check the labels now. Thank you for making this video and spreading the news, well done for being an influencer with the right messages 😘

Cos and &other stories are also a part of H&M group but they’re more focused on offering a bit higher end image than H&M, more expensive items and better quality materials. I agree, it’s hard with so many influencers promoting fast fashion brands and every week there is a different “must have “. The major thing I have done, after quitting my job of 14 years at H&M, was to start buying only second hand. It’s been a year now, and I mostly buy from other people selling their clothes on line. You got amazing bargains even new or barely used items and even higher end brands. I don’t think I’m ever going back to old way of shopping at high street stores.

Your high end clothes are also made in Bangladesh. It doesn’t mean that product from made by Bangladesh are polyester. It’s the company who chose the fabric and place an order to the garment factory in Bangladesh. For your kind information Bangladesh has all kind of fabrics and especially people from Bangladesh likes cotton because the temperature is hot there. How much do you know about Bangladesh? Please make it correct that brands choose their fabrics not Bangladesh.

As a knitter i do not buy top garments now and socks because i make my own. And i always go for natural based fiber for the top like bamboo or linen for summer and diff types of wool for colder seasons. There is 1 place for plastic for me, socks. Because they need durability. And nylon is what knitters commonly use. 15 to 20% nylon content yarns are usually common.

Thank you for sharing your journey with sustainable fashion, Mimi! It's so important to be amplifying the dangers and destruction of the fast fashion industry. I've been on my journey with sustainable and ethical fashion for the past 3 years or so and you definitely learn a lot once you actually pay attention to the intricacies of the industry and its impact on both people and the planet. To me, the most important thing besides the environmental destruction is the impact on people, specifically the garment workers. Knowing we support companies that do not pay their workers fair and living wages, exploit them and allow them to work in unethical and dangerous environments does not sit right with me. More than anything, the fast fashion industry does a great job at hiding the hidden cost (I highly recommend the True Cost documentary) of our clothing whilst also pushing consumerism at its core. Along those same lines, I truly believe the most sustainable thing we can do with our clothing is simply buy less and choose well and wear what we already own. Getting rid of old clothing to buy completely new sort of does the opposite in the sustainability front and it's so valuable to take a hard look and reflect on our relationship with clothing and consumerism. Thrifting is a brilliant way to curb fast fashion, but fast fashion habits can definitely trickle in with constantly buying and consuming without any conscious thinking. I blame capitalism and the billionaire companies whom convince us we're nothing without their 50 trends a year. Sustainability and ethical fashion is so nuanced and definitely takes a lot of conscious and critical thinking, so I'm glad you are having this conversation on your platform and many folks are learning and unlearning about their relationship with fashion!

I stopped to buy fast fashion in 2017 with a few exceptions now and then for Massimo Dutti because I need to use formal clothes or even suits to work. I do think their clothes tend to last a little bit more when compared with Zara and similars, and I usually buy the ones that are made in my country (Portugal). However, I have noticed that the majority of their garments nowadays only recommend dry cleaning with tetrachlorethylene, they forbid any other type of wash. This is quite problematic for me because tetrachlorethylene is very toxic to be in direct contact with our skin and doesn't seem to be eco-friendly at all. What a shame! 😔

I think it's great that you are conscious about the environment and are mindful about your purchases. I just wanted to provide a couple of unsolicited remarks. First of all, people do buy second hand polyester and second hand everything. Also, materials like cashmere, wool, or silk do not "come from the environment". Animals are exploited for you to wear these. And last but not least, have you considered pieces made of recycled materials, including plastic?

I’ve been doing the same, buying what I love, will use, and appreciate. I splurged recently on a cashmere sweater and it was the best decision. It’s warm, soft, and is wearing well. I got rid of the sweaters that were uncomfortable. Not to mention, that most people only wear 20% of their wardrobes, so why not pare down and have what you really love. Quality > quantity.

Loved this video. Wish more young people saw this and realise the impact their fast fashion purchases are having on the environment. Fashion bloggers and social media are just escalating the issue as people (especially younger generations) are bombarded daily with trends and what they should be wearing to "fit in". I loved hearing about your journey! As I am slowly ending my twenties, I have had a similar experience wherein I focus on quality vs quantity and look at the materials. I love the rise of pre-loved luxury fashion and your point about selling those pieces more easily is so true. Its a much better use of your money from a quality perspective but also from an investment perspective as you will get a good amount back once sold. Thank you Mimi! I like the first point of only wearing natural fibres and no polyester…however, where can a person shop? Even all of the more mainstream ‘sustainable brands’ like Everlane, Sezane, Frank and Oak and almost all others still use a lot of synthetic ( plastic) fibres. The vast majority of cashmere sweaters are not affordable. Other KZbinrs will say shop Quince …they do not ship to any other country than the USA. My other issue is most ‘sustainable’ brands have just very plain neutral style aesthetic and way too masculine. Sezane is more my style but it does not make sense for me to spend the very high price for that brand when the majority of their items still have a high amount of polyester just like fast fashion stores. Also, the majority of more ‘sustainable’ brands are not size inclusive enough. Some brands do offer much larger sizes ( more realistic). However, I find the style of most brands that do offer the more inclusive sizes are just not what I would want. As well, I am petite ( under 5’3”). Though I have searched extensively, I have not found one ‘sustainable’ brand that offers true petite sizing. If one exists then often, again they only offer ‘basics’ or just a couple of items. I cannot find a good fit in a sweater. I now hem all my own clothes and am learning to alter clothes myself. I literally have to alter EVERY SINGLE item I purchase. When I’m paying $200 or more for an item…I do not want to have to also invest all my time, energy, effort and even more money just to try to make it fit. If I’m going to have to pay $200 for a sweater ( or item) it needs to be perfect…style, color, material, price, FIT and cost. So far, I have not found one item that fits all the criteria to warrant paying $200 plus. I completely cannot shop second hand because ALL the clothes in second hand stores SMELL. Not body door issues but from laundry detergent scents and dryer sheet scents which are toxic ( for myself and the environment) and I cannot tolerate it at all. No one ever mentions this in regards to the environment or health.

This video resonated with me because right now I am working my way through my home doing the exact same thing but with my home decor. I’m decluttering massively all the junk that I’ve accumulated throughout the years and removing these items only to replace them with higher end items or real plants. I want to surround myself with beautiful things but not have a jam packed cluttered house. The same should go for our wardrobe. You’ve inspired me to take this concept into my closet and move forward by buying only pure natural high quality items. Can you recommend a winter coat? I looked on Burberry website and was sad to see that the $1500 coat I wanted had a lot of polyester. You’re so right about checking the labels. Thank you 😊 ❤

Thank you for this video. I definitely resonate with alot you said. 1. Polyester feels terrible on skin 2. Fast fashion is often a money thrown away because the quality and lifecycle of the clothing is below average. 3. Items bough than you kinda liked ends up clogging your wardrobe and give you no pleasure upon consumption. 4. Fast items of low quality are polluting the planet. Lovely advises some of which I will definitely follow. Nice to have you back on KZbin 👍

The first I do, too, is check the fabric content on the label of a garment, or for online purchases, the fabric description. (Many of us oldster make a distinction between a label, which is sewn inside the garment and designed to be permanent, and a tag, which shows the price and sometimes the size, and is hanging on the garment and is designed to be removed). If there is no label showing the fabric composition, I just don’t buy it, it’s undoubtedly polyester, acrylic or nylon. Price is a good, but not infallible, guide. For example I just saw a YT video where the creator showed a “real silk scarf” for $9.00 US, but I knew it just couldn’t be. I checked the link to be sure, and it was of course, 100% polyester. On the other hand, I did once find a genuine silk scarf at H&M on sale for $12 and I love it. Amazon shouldn’t allow brands to identify as items as silk if they’re not silk, but they do., all the time They are also guilty of selling garments with no fabric content labels, which is actually illegal in most countries including the US, Canada, Europe and probably NZ/Australia. There are certain things which must be included on these labels, fabric composition and care recommendations are two important ones. I also don’t buy plastic shoes, not even one single pair has ever turned out to be comfortable and I’m 63. Unlike leather, they never stretch, soften or break in, and the straps slice into the skin of the feet, I have scars to prove it. Plus, they make feet sweaty, a good way to get toenail fungus or Athlete’s Foot! Plastics don’t really work on the human body anywhere, I’m sure they’re ok for others uses, deck awnings?, car covers? but not for apparel.

Just to note, your cashmere sweater at 300 pounds…in Canadian dollars that is $485 ( almost $500) not to mention shipping, duties, return shipping , size exchanges. I’m so happy that is in your budget but it is not for a vast majority of people. And other brands that are in the USA are not any better. Even considering cost per wear really doesn’t get that price down enough in any even remotely reasonable time frame. Let alone if a women has weight fluctuations through various stages of life and cannot wear it anymore.

I had to stop trying to wear synthetics, they just made me miserable, then I learned that it is skin allergies causing my symptoms. I have been gradually eliminating these fibers from my wardrobe, first with those worn on the torso (my skin is more sensitive there than on my limbs and it overheats more easily, too), as I either: can afford to replace them, decide I don’t need them, they look dated, or they wear out. Losing and keeping off a lot of weight required me to replace many items like sweaters anyway, the others I altered myself to fit. I’m currently eliminating the last of my items in synthetic blends, they irritate my skin, too. I am keeping most of my polyester skirts because I can wear a silk slip between them and my skin, and skirts are easy to size down. My pet peeve is the ubiquitous polyester lining, even in designer brands. I do a lot of research to find blazers, etc. with natural-fiber or rayon linings instead. I can wear the “manmade cellulosic” rayon/viscose/lyocell with no problems, probably because they’re made from plant fibers, not plastics. These have many of the great properties of silk: lightweight, soft, highly breathable, and good drape. Mostly, I look for rayon versions if I can’t find what I want in silk, it’s available in more options. Quality is really important in these rayon-family fabrics; thinner, cheap, fast-fashion versions don’t perform as well or or look as good. They often pucker a lot just when steaming them and can be very limp, but I iron them with Magic Sizing and they look better quality. Knits of silk or rayon, or blends of them, are the most comfy fabrics ever.

How do u wash ur wool and cashmere items? Because I decided on getting a 100% wool long-sleeve shirt assuming it would last me forever. But after its first wash it ended up getting lots of holes in it, yes I even let it air dry and it still got holes, noticeable ones :/ defeating the whole purpose of getting the shirt. Maybe washing it on delicate wudve prevented that but idk.

Hi Mimi, I completely agree with you on sustainable fashion and it being very hard to resist fast fashion. What would you say about workout clothing? I find myself purchasing lululemon gym shark and Alo but would think its hard to find sustainable leggings and tops for workout out as they have to be stretchy and pliable. I do try to make slow small changes and feel that it would make a difference! This is such an important topic. We are overconsumers and we have to be considerate of the planet, the water, the pollution also the exploited people that make the super cheap clothing.

Hello Mimi I agree in almost everything you’d said , I think that second hand stores are the way to go, and using quality vs quantity is a very good choice however some of the natural fabrics are not animal friendly like wool , this industry is full of animal suffering unless the item comes from a second hand store, Animal suffering is something that always comes to my mind when I want to buy leather , feathers or natural fabrics.

It's so nice to have you back here on KZbin, Mimi! Accidentally I'm on the same way as you are. I'm used to wear clothes made of natural fibres all my life anyway, but not every piece made of cotton etc is sustainable. Furthermore the cheaper clothes are often not cut and/or sewed well, so the garment becomes soon unattractive. With some help from fashion designers I found out to which things I should be vigilant about. I also did and still do some research which fashion label is producing environmentally friendly and paying a fair price to the people who participate in the production. This is quite an interesting journey and one appreciates the clothes even more if one knows how they are made. Here in Germany we have a label called Armedangels which fulfills all these conditions and I love to buy lots of clothes there. You can already feel on your skin the quality and the fact that they don't smell at all, makes me happy. So I don't mind to pay about 80 Euro for some pants for example. I'm curious about your experiences and can't wait for your next video! 🤗❤️

for zara and H&M you can find basics in natural fabrics such as cotton or linen you just need to read , also for jewelry I'm totally with you investing in buying gold and diamonds is way cost effective in the long run and if you are on tight budget lab grown diamonds is a good alternative always THINK before purchase it's your own hard earned money you are spending it
