Performabuilt Transmissions makes a "heavy hauler" 4l60e that would be perfect for you. They have one rated for a true 500 hp and a beefier one rated for 800. I have the one rated for 500 in my 400 rwhp tahoe that I daily drive and tow on weekends. I haven't had a single complaint or problem in over 2 years. I paired it with a Circle D 278mm converter with billet front plate and 3k stall. With efans and a 40k tru cool, my trans temp doesn't go above 180 on the hottest day of towing in stop and go traffic.
@james107392 жыл бұрын
I don't know $3300 for just the trans and you still have to install it vs if you pull a 4l80e at the junkyard you can get one for between like $100 and $300 and put an hd2 kit in for around $100 and you are going to need a couple drive shafts made and need to modify a cross member and ad a pin and move some around a some cooler line stuff but if you plan on making power or towing the 80 is definitely the play
@bradp99382 жыл бұрын
@@james10739that price is for a new transmission straight up. You can send your own in and have it built for alot less. a little dark? that is literally some of the darkest trans fluid ive ever seen. lol. its BURNT BURNT. also the shuttering you felt was the internal clutches more than likely slipping in the torque converter. that will cause heat. for future reference if you EVER see a spike in temp even if its not "hot" there is a problem or you are over working something and need to stop. if you ride for 100 miles at 150 then all of a sudden the last 5 miles you jumped to 185 there is a problem. a transmission in normal circumstances will stay a steady temp even while pulling a trailer.

The rear A/C is the same thing that happens with the front recirculation door. It over travels and gets stuck in the full cold position. 12 years ago I fixed mine by removing the trim panel on the right side, removing the hot to cold actuator and took it apart. I drilled a small hole in the casing and put a small machine screw and nut to act as a new internal stop. I've had hot and cold function ever since.

Did you check clutch pack clearance? Sometimes a tight 3-4 clutch pack tolerance. An cause excessive stage while the clutches aren’t applied in first and second. I always beef up the 4l60, Sonnax’s elevated pressure regulator spring and boost valve, input housing reinforcement kit, corvette servos, sonnax return springs, the list goes on and on and on. Normally you look at what’s failed and vary the recipe based off application. A nice 500-550hp capable build will do wonders for reliability and overall usability on a truck with big tires that’s going to haul and get driven harder then the average. Also 4l80 is great but is geared differently then the 4l60 so you may notice some things you don’t love.

Similar thing happened to my 4L60E in the suburban, turned off for 30 seconds and it will limp back. Hey Matt! I know I'm a little late, but I know exactly what's wrong with your rear AC cause it happened to mine, and it's got to do with the way the brain box in the back controls the blend door. The first thing it does on startup is runs the actuators all the way in both directions, I imagine for calibration. The problem arises when the foam sealing the blend door wears out and lets it travel too far, throwing a range code because it reads over 5 volts. Everybody and their mother will tell you to replace the rear ac control module, which I'm sure works great. Problem is 1, I'm cheap, and 2, they're unobtainium right now, and they may never be back. This lead to me diagnosing it on my own, especially as I managed to fix the "rear access open" message on my BCM not long before(it's the filter capacitor on the rear access sense pin in the BCM). What I'll try when I finally get the time is replacing that foam to make sure it seals up properly. My bandaid though was to stick a little folded up piece of a soda can on the actuator to stop it from turning too far. In theory, the right value of resistor on the position lead from the actuator might work too, but I don't care to try that. Hopefully this helps you or somebody else out!

Great subject, maybe, you or someone can give me their thoughts: Since new, I have had a 02 Tahoe 5.3 4x4, 3.73 rear, 33" tires, tow package, a custom tune of the engine and trans since new, it is ALL ORGINAL with 300,000 miles on it!. It runs and shifts great like new I even tow 8000lbs trailers with it and regularly beat it offroad. I do 4qts Valvoline Max Life in the Trans with every engine oil service at 10,000-mile intervals. Recently sent a sample of my trans fuild to Blackstone and it came back as normal. So here is the deal, I drive this Tahoe on road trips and I keep thinking it's going to just dump the transmission on me in the middle of nowhere. So I have asked a bunch of shops what are the signs that it's reaching the end, and I have not got any consistent response. Your thoughts....?

Torque Converter didnt want to unlock while slowing down without popping and sounding like a box of bolts. And really slow shifting... First thing they asked me is if I was an "ASE certified transmission tech". Of course im not, however, this isn't my first time swapping a transmission. Got it back and installed, fluids and good to go. Yes they handled it... But still should've been right the first time. Don't use your OD when towing your car unless your on flat highway for a long straight run. When you get in town or hills turn it off.

@@chrishansen7004 I did a similar 4l80 swap in my Yukon. 4l80e shifts MUCH better than any 4l60, plus there is no band to apply when going up through the gears. A mild tune, rebuild, and a bit higher stall converter was fantastic behind my 5.3. If you really want there is aftermarket support for a lower first and 2nd gear for the 4l80 that closely matches the 4l60 gear ratios.

So there is a filter inside the valve body that is the relief port. If it get clogged, then the fluid has nowhere to do and will actually hydraulic the spool valves inside the valve body and keep them from shifting correctly. The result is you end up applying 2 clutches at the same time and that in turn throws the transmission into a limp condition or like in your case, neutral. Like all 700r4 and 4l60e transmissions, when you high Rev it, the 3-4 clutches get a little bit of friction and will cause the vehicle to creep. I do believe that a 4L80e would be a great trans for Tahiti and if you want to get more out of the tall 1st gear, go to a set of 4.10 gear sets and possibly a gear vendor unit between the trans and the T case. That would act as a gear spliter making your trans an 8 speed with double OD.

Flushed rear transfer case fluid, it was black!!! Also did all four u-joints.

The rear ac not working is not the blend door actuators it’s the rear hvac module itself. There’s tsbs out for it being faulty. Only way to fix it is with a new dorman module. I guess my previous comment was automatically deleted because I included a link to the Sonnax website outlining the problem, but it sounds like your TCC solenoid/apply valve. It’s actually a common issue with the 4l60e. If you get the Sonnax Sure Cure kit, you’ll fix all the common issues with the 4l60e. I used it when I rebuilt my 4l60e and threw a corvette servo in there, too. My truck hauls better than ever. Hauled a titan just last month.

I'm thinking maybe your TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) solenoid went bad and Maybe hurt the converter clutch because of all the metal flakes in the fluid. Which would make sense when you turn it off it resets the solenoid until it starts acting up again. The solenoid is on the valve body and easy and pretty cheap to replace. Maybe try to replace the TCC solenoid and flush the fluid with new through the transmission and converter and see if that helps where you can still drive it around town until you replace it with a 4l80e transmission.

🌴Torque converter, can't over rev oem stuff my bro.The shaving's are dropping with Tahiti off & are getting sucked right into the filter and completely covering the filter's opening up at the filter.That few seconds because the suction stopped from the oil pump allows the pump to work internally for a few seconds even if it's 5 minutes it's frying the clutch & the tranny oil. Side Note:I wonder if you could improve the pumps veins I know you can but is it a pump issue that causes the torque converter failure.That there is not enough oil at high revs and the torque converter runs dry.You can also take out there is a blockage in the input shift that keeps trany oil in the torque converter well you could take it out of the input shaft for better flow where it is needed.Look at the very tip of the input shaft you can take it out.🍌 Well to be on the safe side program the shift points to be 200 RPMs sooner & that should protect your daily driver,yep definitely.🌭

Cars that I've owned with automatic transmissions with higher miles they would have issues when cold but when they warmed up they were fine. I had a couple Lexus ES300s that were like that and an Acura that was like that. My current accord I'm just waiting for the trans to have issues. I've never done a trans swap before and I want to teach myself how to do it. I've done everything else many times. But I've been fortunate to never have a trans die on me. Even my 01 Yukon XL with 215k miles and my 04 Suburban LT with 240k miles both had their oem 4L60e trans and they worked flawless. I towed with both and never did have an issue when I owned them. I miss my suburban but I drove it a ton and with gas prices going up I needed something better on fuel and I snagged my 08 Accord for an absolute steal because it wouldn't start and I fixed it in less than a day for 40$ and haven't had an issue since. Almost 1k miles on it since.
@tuloko162 жыл бұрын
Dumb question, but did you put the correct filter in there after the rebuild? There is one for the deep pan and another for a shallow pan. They both will fit and look fine, but a shallow pan filter in a deep pan will cause fluid starvation and burn it up. Either way, a stock rebuilt 4l80e will be way better then a 4-5$k built 60. Not worth it.
@reykennedy57162 жыл бұрын
Where are you getting your prices from?? They are less than 2k....
@mattquarles70292 жыл бұрын
Where to start with this comment. First off by first glance I could tell he had the proper deep pan filter in his transmission. Longer neck and small little feet at the bottom. He has a deep pan as it's not totally flat all the way across. A shallow pan filter would simply fall out and not work and a deep pan filter in a shallow pan will clog the filter completely. Also you can build a 4l60e for about 1800 at a local transmission shop that will snatch gears twice as hard as a 4l80 and last longer than one too. If you get quoted anything over 2000 for a properly built 4l60 they are ripping you off and trying to get over on you.

the torque converter clutch was slipping while towing in 4th gear on the way back. Reason for the higher temps.and dark fluid. The clutch material from the lock up clutch clogged the filter. Damn that’s tough. I just got a 02 Tahoe and it’s 118,000 miles on it now. 4wd and v8. Dad sold it to me for 1,000 and I think the trans is slipping so I wanted to get another one in it but I thought about rebuilding it as well but not sure. Need to get more info about the trans from my father before I move forward. Which trans is the best version to get for these tahoes?

I would advise you to go to monster transmission and by the SS version not the SS extreme but the SS version transmission it will cost you 3,000 Plus United States dollars wait a minute you're from the United States so three grand I just got one put into my 2001 GMC Sierra SLE 1500 two wheel drive and my Sierra cranks out 449 horsepower and this transmission is absolutely superb if you want to transmission that you can chomp on and not have to worry about any consequences this is it

Clutches are fried dude those black specs are facing material off the clutches probably took out the band too . The pressure would went down from all the contaminates in the system and you would of lost pressure to the converter and the trans system as a whole. Sorry man this sucks

Why "build"a 4l60 when a stock 80e is stronger if its just dual fed the fwd clutches.. the parts in the 60e are simply smaller and less durable..
