My Take on the Sonic OVA

Sonic OVA is always a joy to revisit. I love the story, music, and the way the characters are handled. Martin Burke is genuinely one of my favorite voices for Sonic, idk what it is but the voice fits. Outside of the cool action sequences, especially the ones in the Land of Darkness, the character interactions are probably my favorite part. Sonic and Tails being a good duo as always, Sonic and Knuckles being a bit competitive while having that loyal bond, and everyone being done with Eggman's antics. So many great moments to think about. I'm definitely going to check out some new jack swing music because I adore the music of this movie and games like Sonic R.

I love the OVA so much, more than I actually thought I would. I think my favorite detail is South Island being Sonic and Tails’ home and they just kind of live in an old airplane wreck on a beach. It honestly reminds me a lot of Scrapnik Island (i wonder if the scrapnik writers to inspo from the ova). I know the idea of Sonic having a home is a bit contentious but this ova definitely has my favorite version of the concept. I can imagine Tails just walking around junk piles and ripping tech bits out of them to make gizmos to show Sonic, who’s napping on the beach. Just two lil bros on their junkyard beach :)

Metal Sonic essentially saved Shadow in Sonic Rivals 2 in a sort of sacrificial way. He rips the Chaos Emerald from his body so Shadow could use Chaos Control to escape the dimension they were trapped in. Kind of heroic tbh. 🤔

Sonic ova is literally something that I found amazing as a kid and still find amazing today. Sonic's character is well understood: Brave and strong but very arrogant, which can sometimes cause him problems. Tails was so cute in this anime and even though at first it shows that he relies a lot on Sonic, he managed to stand on his own many times. Knuckles was just perfect here. The anime managed to give him a totally different role and personality that suits him very well. He is no longer the guardian of the master emerald, but rather a great sociable treasure hunter (a trait inspired by games). Plus, I found it funny that some characters confused him with a mole. Eggman was so funny, the big comic villain. The original characters were decent and I think we can all agree that this is one of the best Metal Sonic appearances to ever appear in media.

The term you’re looking for as far as the music goes is J-House, 90s J-House to be exact. New Jack Swing is its own sound entirely being born as a merge of mid 80s R&B and Hip-Hop so think of a song like Get Away by Bobby Brown or I’m Your Baby Tonight by Whitney Houston. 90s J-House took a lot of the components and sounds of New Jack Swing and then made it more electronic and techno based. One of my favorite 90s J-House songs is Movin’ On Without You by Utada Hikaru. If you’re a fan of Kingdom Hearts, you may recognize her as the artist who makes all the vocal themes for that series though she’s an international superstar in her own right. I highly recommend her album, First Love, it’s a great mix of J-R&B, J-House and J-Pop as it was in the 90s.

I really loved how earth became this dystopian city. And the freedom fighters and these humanoid animals were able to grow and thrive.Kinda spooky too lol

The world is my favorite part 2 the whole semi post Apocalypse setting is a really inspiring choice no character brings up why the world is this way so its even more interesting the closest thing it reminds me of is adventure time you see how this world has changed and adapted but you also see the remnants of its past. Also the animation the animation is steller there are a lot of amazing moments but when sonic get hut when attacking metal robotnik gets me every time 😅

Sonic flips the bird, so pretty iconic. Total side tangent, but regarding Metal Sonic origins in general, I REALLY like Cylent Nite’s take from Sonic Expanse. Basically Metal Sonic is actually powered by a failed clone of Sonic made from the seed of a Miracle Flower, and later he becomes a “Seedrian” dude named Core. In a team with “Biolizard baby possessed by Maria’s ghost” and “Blaze after 06’s ending” no less!

The only issue with Metal being good in the game lore is he isn't quite made in the same way as the OVA. Or at least it's not really shown. I'd like if that origin became canon though because it could really be interesting to explore that with Metal. Alongside his inferiority complex of being a robot duplicate of Sonic instead of an identity of his own. Really interesting stuff they could do.

@@petergriffinsbrother2499 right??? I do think the opening to Sonic CD depicts Sonic’s look a little better, (more fluid and proportions are more accurate) but nothings perfect! I’d watch every episode of that!

I didn't know about Sonic OVA until the late 2000's. First time I saw it I was really interested because of the animation, the world, and a bit of the story. Sonic OVA's voice actors were interesting but made them work. Though I don't like how they made Tails sound so nasally. Can't forget about Knuckles with his iconic hat. Again I would love to see another Sonic movie in this kind of animation again.

I like sonics characterization in the ova. Hes always been arrogant and alittle selfish. Those were some of his flaws as a hero that were highlighted in the movie. I loved how he didnt initially jump into action when the owl was in danger and instead he told tails to save him but when push really came to shove, he came through. I feel like alot of fans nowadays dont realize that sonics always been the type to not want to HAVE to be a hero. He does it when necessary but ultimately hed rather stay in his own lane.

it always confused me why Sonic tried to save Metal's life and Knuckles literally held Sonic back saying "he's going to drag you under with him" and it looks like he was right based on the swipe Metal Sonic did. Yes Metal wants to be the one and only Sonic and he's built to kill Sonic but because he has Sonic's DNA, he has that bit of heroism in him. Sonic is also the type of guy to never finish anyone off because he see's good in everyone, even Eggman. He did that in Black Knight too with the Knights of the Round Table and Merlina

The OVA was fun but if I think about it too critically it feels like weird fanfic. Also in terms of contrast with Sonic entering a new foreign world I think Frontiers did a great job at that. Probably cause it was the main focus of the game. That said I do like how the OVA tried to some world building results aside

Genuine question, why do you limit yourself to 5 minutes? About the OVA Itself though, I’d give my kidney away to see what this would’ve become had it got to be a full series like they had planned. Apparently it didn’t well enough for them to justify making a whole series so they took what they had and just made it a “movie”.
