I think one of the big problems of it was the "canon" of it all. When I was a kid there were two simultaneous Sonic cartoons (that aired on the same channel over here) but even as a 7 yo, I understood they were different "continuities", different worlds. So when they say Prime is canon, instead of people just accepting the story as what it is, it draws people to ask questions about how it lines up, how it ties in. If there's contradictions people will disengage.

I’m 100% sure the “it’s canon!” stance was a marketing tactic and nothing more. They wanted fans to watch the series, and want do fans like (according to cynical corporate overlords in the early 20’s)? Canon!

"We don't want to lose what was done right here" is something that I wish was brought up more in Sonic discussion. Even if the general consensus of a piece of media is that it is bad. Its good qualities should be acknowledged just as much as the negative ones to give well rounded feedback. Sonic Prime has amazing animation that easily rivals what Sonic Boom had to offer. The movement and facial animations are fluid and expressive which perfectly fits the cartoon nature of Sonic's design. However, I do agree that the story falls short as it becomes WAY to repetitive and that isn't helped by the simple multiverse worlds that they chose. I don't even mind when different writers explore Sonic's character, but this is in the context of a Sonic post Advance 3, so the way he acts feels not true to him completely. Sonic usually sees the good in others, but he has the understanding that when the situation is too far gone, he'll act quickly to fix things before it's too late (i.e. Chaos and Merlina). The final act has too much of him reaching out to Nine although I understand why that was the case, just wish it was handled a bit differently, so it didn't drag on.

4:39 I agree! These characters has ALWAYS been limited in the facial animations that aren’t from Sonic Boom or Sonic Drone Home from the movie universe. But it’s mostly because the fact structure of Movie, Boom, and Prime Sonic are rounder and their eyes are closer together. Which allows for better facial animation with the eyes. Their mouths also can be in the middle. Personally I think Sonic Prime Renders are the best modern 3D models Modern Sonic characters have so far. The faces are round enough so they can have more expressive faces. Their eyes are bigger. Their shape language in their torsos aren’t flat. The hands aren’t too big. And the overall designs are animation friendly enough to be animated amazingly. If you look between the recent game model and compare it to Prime you might be able to notice these details.

I enjoyed Sonic Prime for what it was and I'm glad that We have a Cartoon akin to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1987, Transformers 1984, He-Man 1983, Tundercats 1985 and GI-Joe and I feel like it was the lost fourth DIC Sonic Cartoon if DIC made a Sonic Cartoon in 2003, the plot is kinda like Darkwing Dark in terms of tone. However the writing has this meta feel to it and I didn't like how Sonic was portrayed, I can see Movie Sonic act like this because the Sonic Movies are kinda like a coming of age story, but this is set in the Sonic Gameverse and IMO, this takes place after Sonic Lost World where Sonic is fully grown and not like Classic Sonic, I won't say it's the worst Sonic cartoon/show, I still think Sonic Underground was awful (with the Knuckles episodes being the only good ones) on the plus, Sonic Prime did made Shadow a good character pretty much season 3 was the kick off to Fearless the Year of Shadow, well that's what I felt like.

Bottom line, the ultimate problem here is that they were selling a product first and foremost and just writing a story around it. It feels like it exists to sell toys at its core, which isn't too farfetched considering WildBrain's track record. They took the Transformers approach, which I don't think works for Sonic because it does this approach at the expense of keeping the character personalities (mostly Sonic's) consistent with the game/ comics counterpart. It didn't work with Boom, and it certainly won't with the main series. Story should always come first, and if it's good enough, people will naturally want to buy merchandise for it.

The fight choreography was fantastic and it was nice to see Sonic have an emotion other than "Whoa! Chilidogs! Smell ya later!" He doubted himself, he felt fear, he felt regret. Sonic Prime's Sonic was a character, not a corporate mascot. My biggest issue with Prime, however, were the worlds and scenarios that Sonic was put IN. They had a great Sonic, but they didn't give him a deep enough story to let him react to. It was just kinda'... "Now we're Terminator. Now we're Flintstones. Now we're One Piece. Now we're fighting the same robot army for 3 episodes. Oh, look. The show is over now." It's a kid's show, I get it, but you know what ELSE is a kid's show? Avatar the Last Airbender, the original Dragon Ball, Batman the Animated Series, the list goes on. Just because your show is for kids doesn't mean that your story has to be a tepid and meandering mess.
@therandomvideochannel858911 күн бұрын
you say that like game sonic having a limited emotional range is a bad thing, which it is not. the advantage of sonic's static nature in the games is that it allows for a lot deeper and nuanced stories in which he's a role model and changes the world + people he meets around him. the best example of this is in black knight - he doesn't care if he's seen as a villain, he's just doing what he thinks is right. in prime, everything that happens to sonic is pretty much is own fault and he hardly has any confidence in himself which is the polar opposite of the original character's DNA. on the surface level, both prime and the storybook series have a lot in common with sonic travelling in an 'alternate world' and meeting alternative versions of his friends, but the difference in which those stories succeed compared to prime is because of sonic's characterization. even prime's stereotypical worlds and themes could have worked if sonic as a character was engaging, but he simply wasn't. i do agree that everything was too kiddish and made into a meandering mess tho

Sonic prime in my opinion had the biggest opportunity to be the sonic show to bring back most of the voices of sonic in the past and present like Rodger Craig smith as boom sonic, Jaleel White as Dic/cartoon sonic, Jason as anime sonic and Ryan (until this was confirmed to be cannon to the games) as videogame sonic. Netflix has F U money so this could’ve happened but they didn’t do it which is disappointing.

I wanted to love Prime so much, it had so much potential. I actually love premise of having the final antagonist be a Tails that never had a Sonic, and it felt like such a good place to explore the dynamic of the two. I kept watching cuz I was waiting for the writing and story to step up and get into gear, but it just never happened, and by the end I felt so disappointed. I’m not usually one to write or consume fanfiction, but that ending genuinely made me want to open a doc and do a rewrite of Prime cuz I felt there was so much untapped potential.

On other fronts, the visuals in this show were really pretty! especially the expressions and lighting like you said. I also enjoyed the voice cast, especially Devon Mack and Ian Hanlin as Sonic and Shadow, who really brought life to their characters’ interactions
@SepSmi7912 күн бұрын
The writing and pacing of the show significantly held it back, which is a shame because Deven Mack and Ian Hanlin did an amazing job voicing Sonic and Shadow, respectively. In Sonic's case, the voice is reminiscent of Ryan and Jason’s performances, which I love. However, his characterization is an awkward mix of Movie Sonic and IDW Sonic, making him come across as overly forgiving and immature, often throwing forced pop culture jokes. As for Shadow, the issue lies more with his screen time than the writing itself. He closely resembles his portrayal in 06, but he only appears in one or two episodes per season (except for the last season). Additionally, his character has been downgraded to a mentor or big brother role to Sonic, largely due to Sonic’s immature and naive behavior. The overall story suffers from repetitiveness, as Sonic repeatedly goes through the same process of gaining the trust of his friends in each world, and the fight in season 3 against the same enemies stretches over too many episodes. Ian Flynn's comment about this show being canon only exacerbates these issues. Aside from these shortcomings, I appreciated other elements, especially the animation and voice acting.

Sonic Prime is such a tricky thing for me to pin point my exact feelings towards. Because on one hand, the presentation is great for the most part. The animation, the choreography, the art style are all really appealing to me and was what got me interested in it in the first place besides the fact that it’s a Sonic show. On the other hand, the more I rewatch it, the more I start noticing just how… overly simple everything else was in comparison. The over reliance on recapping everything in most episodes, the repetition in the 3rd season where it felt like they had planned it to be one big finale but we’re forced to stretch it out to be multiple episodes instead. Like you said in your video, there’s a disconnect I feel between the presentation of the show and the actual content of its story. I feel as though underneath all that, there was a much more ambitious story that played further into the idea of a Sonic multiverse that the writers wanted to explore that they just couldn’t get out for one reason or another, whether that be lack of budget or corporate meddling from either SEGA or Netflix (I’m leaning more towards Netflix on this one considering by the time the show was made, SEGA has been gung-ho about re-introducing more Sonic stories with depth). By the end of it, I straight up just stopped caring about the show and only continued watching it because I still wanted to give it a fair shake. I still think it’s a fine time, I’m glad it did well generally both critically and ratings wise, and I do think it does a fine job at introducing more of Sonic to a kid, but maybe that’s the case for me. Maybe I’m just not the target audience for the show and I’m fine with that. But man, a part of me still hopes we one day get a much grander and more ambitious Sonic Multiverse story down the line (despite me getting a bit tired of the multiverse trope), even if it’s purely from a self-indulgent standpoint lmao

I don't the specific issues you had with the writing were apparent in this video. Maybe that was done on purpose as you have a separate video to discuss what is needed for writing Sonic? Anyway I feel like my issues with Prime go with the concepts that went underutilized (it's a multiverse story that didn't do enough with that concept) and the attempts to make it canon. But overall it's great. I feel every single cartoon had it's own issues. One day I hope we can get a definitive cartoon series. Whether it's adaptation of game events or original story that, if canon, doesn't have as many conflicts.

I know its a multiverse story they were going but still I really wanted to see the original Sonic cast shine. I will admit that the story progress was moving too fast (irony) You had Sonic going into a new world, like 2 episodes later boom into another world. It didn't give us enough time to fully let us dive into the environment or let us enjoy some more character interaction. In short, I kinda wanted more world building you know, does that make sense?

I thought Prime started out pretty strong. Sure Caveman World and Pirate World weren’t very deep or interesting, but I thought they were basically fine as one-offs. Though as later “seasons” came out, it became increasingly clear that this was all we were getting, which isn’t enough for novelty dimensions. It feels like they sunk all their budget into New Yoke, and added the rest of the worlds as cheaply as possible, especially The Grim. Though Nine is probably my favorite version of Tails period (which isn’t saying much but still lmao).

It’s a good show for sure but..didn’t hit the same as a show like Sonic X for example! My biggest nitpick with the animation is the way Sonic’s eyes look. I don’t know quite how to describe what’s off about them, but I think it’s that they’re slightly too square? A lot of the time it looks fine, but when Sonic’s eyes go wide it kinda looks like the eyes in Cars where it becomes a bit too close to just a big rectangle. I haven’t seen many people mention this, so maybe it’s just a me thing, but that’s the only complaint I have animation-wise.

When i first saw the images and the first dark and griddy synopsis,i was hooked. Depressing Sonic that must face his actions and overcome from it by having a great character growth. Count me in! And then we got something totally different. Sonic was childish,was sad about 5 minutes then started having fun with the alternative cast and hugged these strangers any time and day he could. Oh and he ruined everything all the time without learning a thing. The only thing he learned from that somehow he was a jerk to his friends cuz why not and he realised nature,espically that Palm tree that was a metaphor for their friendship is the key to everything. Yeah this is not the Sonic we know and love. Then my other problem aside from Sonic's character is the story. First of all....why Green Hill again??? That was the only location. I'd rather use Emerald Town from Sonic Battle. And if this is cannon then where is Cream,Cheese,Vanilla,The Chaotix,Omega,why Gmerl was destroyed in a advance x costume genesis sprite flash back that literally made no sense? I thought the story will be something like,Sonic shattered that thingy and thanks to this their friends split into different parts. It would make sense why Eggman made out of 5 person and each one is a period from his life. And Sonic's quest to gather these characters together to rebuild his real friends but by doing this he must "kill" the alternative ones because they are just fragments. In this case Nine's betrayal actions were made a while lot more sense. Because Shadow was originally created,so he couldn't split unlike Big(who was not even near). This way Sonic really would feel pain because in order to restore the others,he must sacrifice his new "buddies" and would give a deep but painful character growth. But they instead used the lazy way. "Hey look the Spider-verse animated film made a bunch of money! We should also try this multiverse trend" It had so much potencial. What a shame...

You are absolutely right! The premise of the story was VERY strong but as it went forward, it felt afraid to use game elements, but at the same time, felt like it wanted to be treated as a canon story to the games. It feels like the writers wished they were doing a new interpretation of Sonic, and the animators wanted to bring the character's they grew up with, to a new age of animation. The results are a tangle of intentions that makes it hard to offer feedback. Like it didn't know what it wanted to be, or the creative team wasn't given the appropriate resources to make that clearer to us. Feedback is much more constructive if you know what the creator's goal was in constructing the media form. I didn't go into the story too much because I honestly wanted to see what you all thought first. A part 2 is coming for sure!

If you read the parts he worked on, you can really see the similarities. As I'm writing this, I just remembered there's an upcoming animated fan film expanding and fleshing out his ideas and characters in the comics. The project is called Sonic Villans, and they've been working on it since 2018, so it should be done by next year. Most likely going to be WORLDS better than prime was. @@MardiculousYes indeed. It felt like everyone had different ideas and they developed it into the show even if it didn't make any sense. After the season 2 finale it became so predictable and boring. A Pirate ship with full of chili dogs. That was one of the most cringest thing about the show in my opinion. Of course Sonic himself was the peak cringe. I didn't feel any excitement in Season 3 just wanted to get over with because as a fan i felt the duty to watch everything Sonic media except voice takeovers or panels. But it got so stale. I think we can all agree that making it canon was a big mistake, but in my honest opinion, I think it still has a lot of problems even if it wasn't. With the Knuckles show, there was one big issue that makes it easy to understand what could've been fixed, but Prime was just a mess. Sonic was pretty dumb in the first episode, but I think he got better after that. Nine is easily the best variant. I like to think these universe's were basically, "what if these characters lost what made them themselves", and it was such a good concept, and that's why I love Nine so much. Without Sonic, this is what would have happened, but unfortunately the other two didn't work for me. Thorn is probably the most boring and honestly, she lacked what made her Amy imo. I know some fans don't like that Amy is an obsessive fangirl, but as an Amy fan who believes that's what makes her Amy, I think that's just a problem for her in the franchise in general. Sonic Prime, and Amy in Frontiers is in a weird spot, and just lacked what made her Amy for me. And that's probably why I was so uninterested in her character in Prime. And I don't blame the writers for that. Amy right now just has an identity crisis. And then we got Dread. Knuckles in general is honestly my problem character, because I think he has a lot of missed potential, because he's just relegated to a joke side character in mid 2000s to the 2010s, and Prime just reminds me why Knuckles sucks. Because I was so invested in this version of this character. "The Knuckles I know is the most stubborn person I ever know, and you're not Knuckles". THIS IS EXACTLY WHY I LOVE KNUCKLES AS A CHARACTER, but then they just drop it! I was expecting Dread to come and save the day for his friends in the last minute, because he reminded himself why he was a fearless pirate in the first place, but instead, he just returns because he's obsessed with treasure. Easily the most disappointing character in this show, imo. Why bother building that up if you’re not going to do anything with it? Shadow was good. Rouge was okay. And the Eggman council to put it bluntly, is the most cringe villain in Sonic imo. I should have expected millennial and boomer humor somewhere. When Season 2 ended, I was really invested with the cliff hanger. Nine has every reason to feel insecure about returning Sonic's world together, but because Captain Dread, I was skeptical. In the end, I wasn't really satisfied with how they ended it, but I thought it was okay.

I'm actually quite a fan of the first eight episodes of Sonic Prime as the overall pacing felt less like it was on auto pilot and writing was much snappier,everything was much higher quality than the rest of the show outside of Avoid The Void. The shatterverse variations could've had more depth although I actually really like Nine as he's become jaded after how he was treated by others and not having someone like Sonic to help him,and him becoming the main villain was also pretty cool(And kind of hilarious as he's just a kid and still managed to cause all of this chaos in the shatterverse.) I actually think it does a good job at trying to make something that feels like something out of a Sonic game through the designs of the characters and locations, especially with New Yoke City,almost every episode with that location has the best scenes and that's why I think it should've been the entire focus. They don't even have to make it a whole multiverse thing,they could have Sonic be a wanderer like the games who ends up finding the city and they could make it this thing that his dream is to go to South Island and when he finds out that New Yoke is South Island,his main goal is to bring it back to its beautiful natural enviornment. I also don't mind that they made Sonic a little sillier in this show,even if he can be kind of dumb and annoying at times(Didn't really like that moment when he was whining when Dread destroyed the loop de loop.),the moments when he acts like the Sonic we know and love like when he helped the Boscage variations reconcile and him lifting up Nine's spirits in the middle of Season 2 gives me more what I think Sonic should be more than Movie Sonic honestly,even if the movies are generally better written than this show. If you want to see where I'm coming from, then I recommend rewatching my favorite episode "Escape From New Yoke" which is the third episode in Prime,everything from the writing,action,animation,humor,pacing,Sonic's character, and even music is the highest quality in the entire show,infact some of the episodes written and directed by Erik Wiese were some of the best and I actually wouldn't mind seeing him work on future Sonic projects like those web animations,game cutscenes,or even the movies. One thing we can at least least agree on is that the voice cast was stellar,especially Deven Mack as Sonic and Ian Hanlin as Shadow,both of which might be my favorite portrayals of these characters,if Sega is gonna redub the dialogue for the rumored Heroes remake,then the Sonic Prime cast should be hired if they can't get the og cast from that game to come back.

I feel there has to be some separation between characters and plot but the way the characters push the plot in some ways feel Sonic more than I’d say IDW without being forced to move the plot along. The action was great, I think the writing does have it's moments even with it being clearly made for a younger audiences, and could be a fun watch at times. But man does it all fall apart in "season" 3. You could really tell they were stretching the finale to fill some kind of episode number requirement. Hes ben 10. It's all man of action writes. They did it in their Megaman show too.

I'll look into this and see what I make of it. I wouldn't be surprised if they picked up some habits from Ben 10s success. Its often that more corporate team members misunderstand why certain creative choices work, and overapply them to create signs of stability for investors, or future contracts. Creative works simply are not stable lmao. It's risky, and almost always, audiences can see riskier choices and appreciate them more. Money and Art, are like Oil and Water.

Sonic Prime had so much potential; I like the idea of Sonic visiting alternate versions of his friends and learning from that. I like the idea of Sonic meeting an angsty Tails (I know Archie made Tails himself angsty and had Sonic and him fall out, but that was a lot), them becoming friends, having a falling out, and then making up again. I like the idea of an Amy who was never saved by Sonic finding other versions of herself and them becoming sisters and her realising she isn't evil. I loved Chaos Sonic and wish he was in more than one episode. The issue is the execution and the way the narrative of the Shatterspaces doesn't make sense.

I don't really think of or acknowledge the whole "this is canon" BS that the showrunners were spewin out, so my opinion is purely on the actual quality of he show on its own. Overall I'd say it's pretty bad. The 1st batch of eps was actually pretty neat & I enjoyed it but everythin afterwards was horrible. The animation itself was good but the animation style, the way they made the characters move I really didn't like. I prefer boom even if the animation is way weaker. The show jus wasn't very "good" regardless of whether it properly presented the world or characters or "fits the timeline" or wutever. edit: I forgot to mention while I don't think it was good I'd still say it's better than IDW cus of (at least at the start) tellin a much more sonic like story. Like the 1 wit the forest world which shows there needs to be a balance in nature & how it's treated & sonic has to teach that. IDW straight up doesn't have somethin like that. Both have inaccurate characterization but I can at least tolerate the prime versions
