Absolutely love Criterion. These folks know and respect cinema and their packages reflect that.

I've only descovered criterion recently, so are they another type of blu ray company that restore older films then?
@pepesmith57534 жыл бұрын
Harrison Metcalf yes, but they are easily of the best companies to do so as they take so much in the picture quality, audio quality, extras and overall packaging of the movie.

That Godzilla artwork looks insane. Wish film studios did artwork sleeves like that instead of steelbooks.

Steelbooks are nice though.

Thank you so much for posting this video. In a little under 12 minutes you've given me lots of knowledge on how Criterion works as far as their Blu-ray and DVD releases. I was always under the impression that well they were very specific on which movies they created I also did not realize how much effort they put into them and that you're not just getting a movie but a whole package with artwork writings and other things.

Great list, very timely! I highly recommend “One-Eyed Jacks” as this movie was all but lost until Criterion along with Scorsese and Spielberg assisting in restoring this magnificent release. Marlon Brando’s directorial debut. Keep collecting!

I have most of these as well. I would recommend my two favorite comedies Tootsie and Some Like It Hot, and my two favorite Cocteau films Beauty and the Beast, and Orpheus. For horror, try Diabolique, and Repulsion. For Fellini, La Dolce Vita, and 8-½.

Great stuff. Appreciate your breaking down your top 10. I just picked up the Dr Strangelove criterion last week and I love it, too! Huge fan of Malick as well and New World is a grossly underrated film.

Great choices! 12 Angry Men is in my top 5. The first Criterion disc I got was Throne of Blood, the Kurosowa version of the "Scottish play". It is haunting and mesmerizing. Speaking of which, I also recommend Solaris by Tarkovsky, it is a world worth exploring.

For me the films that should have this release in the criterion collection are... Goodfellas Casino The red violin Edward scissorhands The PHANTOM of the OPERA (2004) Gladiator Disney's the lion king and DreamWorks the Prince of Egypt
@Ajourneyofknowing5 жыл бұрын
J's Watch - If only except that like 5 of those movies are too popular & the companies wouldn’t just license them movies out to Criterion and make less money than compared to their remastered releases

@Ajourneyofknowing5 жыл бұрын
J's Watch - oh yes it would be so great to get such popular title actually in the collection again & jamed packed with special features. Goodfellas had to get a second blu ray release for a better recording, Gladiator needs all the features from the 3 disc dvd edition, Edward scissorhands needs an update, and the Prince of Egypt needs as much acclaim as the once’s by Cecil B. Demille.

Do you feel those older classic movies get any real improviments on these Criterion editions? I mean, more recent movies with great special effects like Matrix, Inception, King Kong, Star Wars VII and VIII (to name a few) look great in blu-ray and I’m sure they will look even better in 4K, but does a movie like The Great Dictator gets real better image quality when adapted to these media? I watched a Gone with the Wind bluray version and I was not impressed at all. What do you think?
@JeffRauseo5 жыл бұрын
Eduardo Lorenzo I think it’s even more important for older movies. Some of my favorite 4K movies are older, from the 70s or 80s. If it’s done right a good transfer can make an old movie feel new. Check out the 2001: A Space Odyssey 4K disc. It’s incredible.

@TheYzeman6 жыл бұрын
Harakiri is my favorite movie of all time. Should be a top ten I would think. I have the Zatoichi set as well. However, I took the discs out and put them in thin cases. It's beautiful but awkward packaging. Taking the discs out and putting them back in the original box sucks.
