Looking for Alaska is my favorite YA book. There was something about it that really moved me when I first read it all the way back then. I loved when you said that the time you read a book is as important as the book itself because that's why Looking for Alaska has such a special place in my heart. It reminds me of how and why it moved the girl I used to be during my teen years. Loved the video as always!

My favourite YA book is actually my favourite book of all time. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. I 100% recommend it. I didn't realise it was YA until about a year ago. It reads so much like an adult book. It's so good 👌
@JeansThoughts7 жыл бұрын
+RachelLovesBooks aaaah I actually didn't like the book thief aha, I think my lack of interest in ww2 fiction and the massive hype surrounding it just didn't make for a great reading experience. There's always one ay aha ;)
@Rec4267 жыл бұрын
That's so weird haha. I was complete opposite in that experience. I wasn't really interested in WW2 books before I read it. Im not fascinated with them now but there are one or two on my list that I'd like to check out :) Well, it would be boring if everyone read the same books :P

I'm actually the opposite of that. I'm a fan of WWII fiction and DNF'ed the Book Thief. So you're not the only one, Jean.

I loved The Inheritance Cycle when I read it a few years back! I haven't actually heard many BookTubers mention it, so it's nice to see it make an appearance on here. I kind of feel like re-reading it now. And The Hunger Games is one of my favourite book series (the film adaptations are pretty accurate so that's great too). Along with the realistic characterisation, it raises a lot of important political issues which young people need to hear about.

Love the Eragon book series!!!! ❤️ I love the fact that Christopher Paolini started writing Eragon at 15 years old after graduating high school. I wish they'd done a better job with the movie

Although I read almost all Terry Practhett's Discworld books, the series about Tiffany especially impressed me. It was so full of wisdom about responsibility, community, identity, doing right when and where you can, excuses and character strength that I really consider it the best book for teenagers I have ever read (although I was about 25 when I read it for the first time). Other books for teenagers I loved: Caitlin Moran's 'How to build a girl' (excellent for looking at why and how being ironic and sour can be problematic :) ), Eleanor&Park (I read this book as an adult as well. Although it really really shouldn't be so unique or subversive to have an overweight character who is actually romantically loved and wanted, I know that representation would have meant a lot to me when I was a teenager). Beartown by Fredrik Backman isn't intended as young adult book, but I think it would be so perfect for teenagers (again questions of identity, belonging to a group, sex, gender etc.). I also like Tim Tharp's The Spectacular Now. It sounded very authentic. And Dodie Smith's I capture the castle. I will stop myself now xD Also, not to forget - I love your channel! It is always very gentle, informative and inspiring :)

I have always wanted to read Pratchett - I have every single one of his books as my mum was a massive die-hard fan... but I have never known which to pick up first. I'm sure she has this one - will look for it! Have Only Ever Yours on my TBR pile!!! SO excited to read it soon. Asking For It was AMAZING.

Love a lot of these books, currently reading I am Malala which I think is the YA edition. Loving it, although had to try not to cry reading it in the staff room, especially poignant for me as I have just got my first teaching job and reminds me why I am doing this! I recently have been reading more books that reflect society: THUG and welcome to nowhere being two of them which are both amazing.

I remember absolutely loving the Eragon books as a teenager, though I never finished the series (couldn't be bothered to wait for the next one to come out, I guess). I agree on the Hunger Games as well, they impacted & impressed me much, much more than I anticipated. I borrowed them from someone thinking "at least I won't have to waste money on them" but then I loved them so much. I'd also love to see a top 10 classics video!
@Iry9517 жыл бұрын
I completely agree about time effecting your reading. A book can stay in your mind for a long time or you can relate to it the most if you read it at the right time for it (I hope I make sense) I still need to read the Hunger Games...

If we're not counting the later "YA" Harry Potter novels, then Looking for Alaska was definitely the strongest connection to a book I had as a teen. Other favorites were The Hunger Games trilogy, Eragon (although this series has waned on me in my twenties), The Book Thief. My early teens was when I got really into reading manga like Naruto and Shaman King too. While it's not YA, and even though it took a lot of external aides to understand the story, I was also engrossed by how experimental Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury was when I was 17. It's hard for me to find newer YA novels that I can enjoy nowadays. I'm just not a big fan of how hyperbolic and plot consuming romance is in teen fiction.

i loved loved loved the hunger games and i also recommend it to anyone, because i think it is not only a classic for the dystopian genre, but it can raise awareness, since the Panem is something that can happen to our world today. also Malala's book is totally awesome. at least in my country, the difference between the adult and the young adult versions is the writing style. the ya one is more clear and simple, it just tells the story of Malala from her point of view back then, how she understood everything back then. oh and the ya one also has pictures ^.^

Hi Jean! I highly, highly recommend reading The Hate U Give. It's an important book that gives an incredible outlook on current matters but also manages to be fun. Ahhh, I really need to reread The Hunger Games! I've only recently realized again how good those books - and the movies - are. For a while when the movies were coming out the media were focusing so much on the romance aspect and I think in a lot of people's minds it was seen as "just another Twilight" and it became very "uncool" to like them. I have to admit I did fall into the trap a little bit of dismissing the books as silly teenager books that I liked when I was a silly teenager, but you know what, no. Those books are good. And the only reason people dismiss them is because they dismiss literally everything that teenage girls enjoy.

Only Ever Yours put me off YA for a year haha I hated everything about it but I seem to be the only one. I thought it was so tropey, lots of telling not showing and the dynamic between the girls made no sense to me, why would they brownnose the top girl when she's so cruel and it has no effect on their ranking? Although I do think the ending was good, it wasn't too much or not enough impact. Looking for Alaska is my fave John Green, it's the only one I kept after I did a huge book purge last year. I just got I Am Malala out the library partly due to your book club (adult version - idk why there's a young reader version it seems very patronising when Malala herself was a young person when the events of the book took place? Maybe I'm overthinking it)
