I don't mind England in canon but I hate how the fandom (mostly the USUK part) portrays him. Especially when he's like "A-America-kun you baka!!!" whilst he's blushing uke-ily. Seeing as Britain had the biggest empire (which I might add wasn't a good thing) at one point, why would he act like that? I don't have problems with him being an uke, but I hate it when he is portrayed like that. (I have the same problem with many of the other characters, like China and Romano.) The magic, whilst ridiculous in some strips, does make sense, as England and Britain have a deep history with magical creatures (pixies, unicorns etc.) but where in hell did Flying Mint Bunny come from?Tbh this is probably because I'm British, but oh well.

Oh my God I feel the same about most of the characters of this list! The ones that always bugged me are:Greece, that could be so interesting, show more about his history, philosophy, and YES, his mothers relationships, even the crisis would be an interesting theme to explore; I feel that just making him about cats is kinda sad.. Poland too has more of a serious history, I never understood why he was chosen to be like he is?? And Spain, that I also never had much of an interest. Spain had some really dark parts in their history, and it feels a little too glossed over. I really like Hetalia but sometimes I feel like it lost a lot of opportunities because of failed logics and light humour, it could have explored much more in character depth, events and jokes (I wish you could see my history classes, my teacher has such a sense of humour haha) -this comment is so long-

Finally somebody who will understand my pain when it comes to Poland's design! Yup, I'm Polish too. But you know what annoys me the most about him? Not crossdressing, not his hair and all that jazz, but his friendship with Lithuania. I don't know from which region of Poland you are, but North-Eastern Poles HATE Lithuanians and they hate us. We can't stand each other in the same place without screaming at each other in Russian-English-Polish-Lithuanian mix. Ok, I'm not exactly from there, but I spent 1/4 of my life there (I'm from North - Gdańsk). And seeing Poland hugging Lithuania without stabbing him with dagger meanwhile is... Greatly disturbing, to say at least. We don't even hate Germans or Russians as much as Lithuanians. From which region/city in Poland are you from? I would like to sometimes talk with some Pole who likes history (i nie mówię o takiej w stylu "W 1683r. pod Wiedniem wojska Polskie do zwycięstwa poprowadził Jan III Kaczyński)and Hetalia and takes this mix at least a little bit serious (I'm sick of people who only joke about it - I know it's comedy and I like to laugh too, but there are moment's when you just have to prevent from turning everything into joke) and see some things from different point of viev. Ahh okay :D i see your point but I dont think hima bases how the characters act around each other on the people in the countrys thoughts. This is really hard to explain ;-; but hmm like I always take Lithuania and Poland's relationship as like two people who were forced to be together but got to know each other and then their relationship slowly deteriorated yet they still hold memories of the good times. I dont know XD I think I just interpret how Hima displays these characters differently. I feel that he does the surface stereotypes then he drifts away and makes them their own being, because that's what they are, they still have their own opinions and have the ability to be influenced or not by the majority. I dont think that made sense but hopefully XD I know this is a week old but there's no hurt in exchanging opinions. Went to Poland for World Youth Day last year. The area I was in before WYD events never trash talked Lithuanians. In fact when in Krakow, I saw a Polish and Lithuanian group hang out during Stations of the Cross with Pope Francis. (I talked to a Polish Hetalia fan there. I understood why she didn't like some parts about the character design, might've let it slip we Americans are pretty close to Hetalia America though... but we both agreed that as a character, Poland is fabulous.)

Our hatred to other nationalities depends on where are you from. Silesians don't like Germans, Eastern Poles don't like Russians, Southern Poles... They just exist, Northern Poles (that's (partly) me!) mostly doesn't care, especially people from Gdańsk (we are just People From Gdańsk, we don't really look at nationalities) and North-East Poles (again, that's partly me) hate Lithuanians even more than Russians. Plus, I was once in Vilnius. When they heard me and my family speaking in Polish they threw us out of restaurant. It's not like on the Polish it's better. Hetalia's not a History book... You want to learn about true History, just go to a library and read books about topics that you're intrested in. Okay, there are mistakes in Hetalia, but who cares ? I've been in the fandom for almost 10 years, when the anime was not released yet. (God it turned annoying as hell, but anyway). Hetalia is more about comedy than History itself. It's a parody, and thanks Himaruya sometimes drifts away from reality, it would be boring if he didn't.

Like the separate countries, the fact that England as a country was not united until 962 and that it's southernmost county, Cornwall, wasn't was not fully politically integrated until the 18th century and to this day it is considered culturally and ethnically separate and actually, historically, was more closely linked to Wales. Also there's the case of the Danelaw, where half of England was under Danish rule and is still culturally influenced by them. And then there's the subtld North and South divide that has often caused internal conflict. Trying to portray stuff like that with a single character could get confusing. And as he's already been established it could be odd to introduce a second England at this stage and interfere with current what has already been made canon. That being said, I do understand why you find England annoying, his use of magic in the series is over the top and while the UK does have a lot of history with magic and folklore, it hasn't been at the forefront of our history for centuries. Also the fandom portrayal can be rather annoying, especially when it's shoved in your face, so I can fully understand your point.

As a British person (especially with the new English dub voice) I find England rather inaccurate. MOST British men, even in the olden days, spoke improperly, couldn't afford or just didn't drink tea, were not gentlemen at all. And today, there aren't really gentlemen left at all. I feel as if England was stereotyped wrong, even for a stereotype. Nobles were the only ones anything like APH England, and if he's meant to represent the country as a whole, he's not too good. Most British people aren't actually that grumpy, a lot are chilled out or plain idiots. I like England as a character but not as a representation of my country. Also, British cooking can actually be AMAZING if done right, so there.

For example, the British people portrayed in films or envisioned in general are often seen as people who seem to act superior. This is possibly because they represent nobility instead of the middle class and poor, which would explain why Arthur tries to act like a gentleman around others but ends up angry due to his high standards. As for Sweden I think Hima wanted to focus on how Sweden was feared in the past rather than the present, the first time he was introduced was right after he left the Kalamar Union after all. Plus now days Sweden is shown being a huge pushover to the point where he even let Ladonia literally knock him down on purpose in a temper tantrum thinking it was "parenting", but in reality he's just raising him to be a brat. Sorry if this is long winded but with everything else you said I agreed.

Actually, Greece's last name is a real surname, believe it or not. Besides that, we can tell because of the "is" (ης) at the end of the name "Karpouzis" (Καρπούζης). The work "karpouzi" (καρπούζι) on it's own does translate to watermelon, but can be a female surname because the "s" at the end is subtracted for females, always keeping in mind that the original name was "Karpouzis" and has been altered for this reason, however he is a male so none of this concerns us. His first name is actually more surprising to me as it is a very rare name in modern Greece, making it disappointing that Himaruya didn't pick a more common name. Also, I believe Latvia was the last Baltic county (out of the three) to be historically "created" (or the last to "appear"), so that would explain why he is the youngest. But I can get where you're coming from about the height... like- he's fifteen!!!

I'm a Greek and I definitely agree with you. I've met a person with the surname Karpouzis and others with surnames like Mikros (Small) or Malakas (Bastard). Yeah, we're really weird with those names. But Heracles? That's extremely rare. The most common names for males here are Giorgos, Dimitris, Giannis and Konstantinos, but DEFINITELY not Heracles.

I totally agree about Sweden and Finland having each other's personalities; as someone with Finnish family and lived in the country for a few years, being quiet and reserved is considered culturally acceptable and first nature to fins.... UNTIL YOU BECOME FRIENDS WITH A FIN! I can not remember how many times a friend of mine has told me when they first saw my true colours "WAHHHHHH!!!??? Although I'm English I still agree that England as a character is over-exposed. Though, in all honesty, I find N. Italy to be the most annoying. Seriously. He's just TOO much and he's the MAIN character, so he is also over-hyped. I don't find him cute, he is ridiculously cowardly to the point it's beyond a joke. I do not find his 'smiles' or kindness sincere since he's so quick to run and not defend what he believes in. I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him. It took him so long to bloomin' SMILE at the Aliens in PiW even though his friends were basically dying. Ugh. Get back in the kitchen. Ah, that felt good. (Still love Italy as a country, lol) My favourite character is France. He's hilarious, gorgeous and so much deeper than the fandom gives him credit for. Actually, sometimes I feel peeved at Hima for limiting his character at times and thus giving the fantards ammunition. I find America slightly annoying, too. He's hilarious though... Child-like and determined, so I can't help but love him. No, I think N. Italy is probably the only character that I dislike at times. Lastly, Sweden... I completely agree with you in Finland’s and Sweden’s characters feeling like they’re the wrong way round. As a Finnish person Finland’s characterization always felt weird because it’s so different from the stereotypes and I felt it would’ve fit Sweden or Norway better, heck it would’ve even fit Ice better than it fits Fin. I feel like maybe it’s because the Japanese have a different view of us when you compare it to the rest of the world. To others we generally seem quiet and kind of depressing, but we generally get along with Japanese people well because we have so many similar aspects in our cultures and some of the things they often associated with us are Santa Claus are Moomins which are both quite childlike and cute

As a long-time and always Hetalia fan, I definitely agree that all of these facts, and plenty others, piss me off to NO END?!?! Like, these are just characters that didn't get enough fleshing out with their backgrounds and personality designs. It's not the characters' fault that they are annoying because HETALIA HAS NO PLOT FOR THESE CHARACTERS IT'S JUST HISTORY!? And the demographics the nations are composed of are just like a base for the characters then who cares what else gets thrown on the designs, right? Wrong. So, so very wrong. My favorite characters: North Italy, Finland, and Bulgaria have been portrayed as mostly inaccurate to their respective countries peoples and the latest manga series, World Stars, is providing some details on the Ancients but still. It frustrating to see some of the classic Hetalia characters like Poland and Finland and Sweden (who were in the first episode!!!!) be pictured as they are. Maybe it's the first episode was based on the first few chapters of the web comic and not much detail was put into those because Hima-sensei didn't research the details and was just using popular stereotypes but still. For things like character design, a simple google search would suffice for the average height or age range on citizens in a country. (and don't even get me started on those characters that are just eaten up by the fandom. Looking at you, England. :)

Hetalia is made based on the Japanese's impression of foreign countries. Not everyone can understand the way Japanese people think, so it's normal if some of us cannot understand or like some characters. Although Himaruya-sensei studied in the US and he has approached the West's impression on countries (he tried to make Hetalia more "international" if you notice since the series became unexpectedly famous internationally), he's still a Japanese. I respect your opinion about each characters, but please, if you hate any of them just say it. Your opinion on Sweden makes me think of this comic called Scandinavia and the World which was created by a Danish comic who was confused by the portrayal of the Nordics (especially Finland and Sweden) and I highly recommend you to read the comics. They're hilarious and it's pretty interesting to see nation stereotypes from the creators.point of view since they are from a Nordic country.

Sure, somehow, but why does Italy have it in the first place? I mean, as far as I remember Corsica was a French island from since it was discovered... I mean, I could be wrong and it was originally Italian until France claimed it or something, but... I dunno. I was just confused

I’m sad at how Hima butchered like...everything about South Korea. His thing with groping Japan and China makes no sense. His hanbok is some fusion of a male and female one. I really wish his character could be rewritten :/

In my opinion Sweden should probably have been a mix of Finland and Norway's persona, because we are seen as happier than Finland, but a lot more politically correct than either Norway or Denmark. Personally, I'd trade Norway's persona with Finland and you'd almost match the Swedish stereotype as well. Personally, I cannot stand Sealand, he is literally the only character I don't like. He's just annoying, loud, everything I hate in kid characters, and he hangs around Sweden way too much. BTW, Sweden is said to have adopted Sealand from an internet auction... Which never went through. What really happened was that Sealand put itself on auction and Swedish pirate bay madea bid, but never followed through. Pirate bay is also illegal in Sweden, so the original founders cannot return to Sweden without being jailed. So please, stop pairing Sealand with Sweden, there is no context!!!
