My worst one was my Green cheek. He was really hormonal and angry for like a week straight. This was pretty early on in our relationship so my stupid a$$ didn't take the signs to just let him be. So I took him out of his cage, and I was super stressed so I'm sure he felt that. I picked him up and brought him up to my face to kiss him and BAM he latched on to my upper lip and bit so hard. I had a fat lip for like a week. Now I'm much better at reading his body language and I will never make that mistake again.

How do you train your birds to talk and to come to you. I got my mother in law a porretlet a few days ago for xmas she is only 12 weeks old, i know it's not just going to happen straight away I'm just wondering if you have any tips
@harmonyhearts32044 жыл бұрын
@@r.h7133 this is a pretty old video so I’d look for more recent ones for more advice but since I got a notification for this I’ll give you what I know lol. As far as getting them to talk some birds will never talk and that’s just the way they are but honestly they’ll just pick up whatever they want whenever they want. If there is something particular you want them to learn say it a lot. Repeat it a lot and reinforce with treats if they say it. As far as getting them to come to you this is a harder question to answer. Simplest answer is just patience and attention. With my Grey I had to spend 2 months straight sitting by his cage for hours on end just talking to him. I’d eat my dinner by his cage. Read books. And take things at his pace. But Greys are a little more stubborn than parrotlets. My parrotlets were very curious and only took about 2 days of prodding and treats. But it’s about patience and letting them decide the pace.

Oh yes, beeing bitten in the lip is SO painful. Was the most painful with my african grey too, when I wanted to give him a kiss. He didn't just snap, he held on and I didn't know how to get rid of him. So bad. I only give kisses from above since then. And I watch their bodylanguage very carefully. 😅

I am amazed at how well you've learned to handle bites. I know how bad they can hurt. Many years ago, in my early twenties, I worked at a pet store. I had gotten a few bites from smaller birds, usually love birds; jumpy little things at times. They bled a bit and hurt, but no big deal. Then we got an African Grey. I don't know where they sourced him, but laws were not as strict then about that kind of thing. He was wild. I can't say if he was a wild caught bird, a crazy one, or traumatized from his move. He was still quite young and didn't have much tail color yet. Anyway, I got the job of socializing him. Truth be told, everyone else in the shop was terrified of him and his growl. I wasn't, because I knew he was responding to a stressful situation. I came in early every morning to spend alone time with him. He was getting quite comfortable with me and I figured it was time to teach him to step up. The first couple of dozen times was done with a welders glove on. That seemed to go pretty well; he only bit the glove the first ten or so times over the course of the week. Sooo, I thought we would try without the glove. He watched me take the glove off, very interested in what I was doing, no aggressive posturing or signs of anxiety. I kept talking to him and brought my hand closer to him. He eyed my tender, young fingers, dipped his head down, struck fast as a cobra, and sunk his overlong beak into my right index finger. Like you, I stood very still. He released almost instantly. We stood there sizing each other up (me dripping blood on the floor) and he decided I was OK. I held no grudge against him. We became best buddies after that. Eventually though, as happens, he was sold. At least the man he was sold to was a bird person and he commended me on the bird's good manners. I cried like a baby for a week. I still think about that bird, forty years later.

I learned quickly how eerily intelligent birds can be when one of my cockatiels learned how to correctly use goodnight by himself. At first I assumed he was simply mimicking me telling him goodnight, but he rapidly learned to use this to let us know when he was up past his usual bedtime and wanted to go to bed. He will tell me "night night birby, goodnight" until I cover his cage ONLY when it is past 9:30PM and he is ready to sleep. It still blows my mind when he does this and made me have a whole new respect for how intelligent smaller birds are.

Great video, Marlene! It's important that people see and understand that it isn't always the cute and playful side you usually show in your other videos. looking forward to your "Why birds will bite" video; i hope you'll include a "when biting isn't really biting" section too, pointing out things like how birds used their beak as another hand to hold on or stabilize themselves, etc... as well as like what Leo was doing all through much of this video: his "cuddly nibbles", like when you'd give him scritches and he'd nibble your fingers and cheek back. also, the "foreground entertainment" (Jersey's antics) were just hilarious this time, with her head and crest popping up all over the place lmao!

My Eclectus bit me a ton when I first got him, he was a rescue from a real bad housing situation. I actually still have a scar of one time I offered my wrist for him to step up, but I moved too fast and startled him so he chomped down. It happened a little over four years ago now, but I still have the scar. He is a lot better now! And he loves doing tricks like waving or those little stacking puzzles. Still terrified of strangers and doesn't like being touched, though he tolerates it enough for me to do my daily check-ups on him.

Oh Man! Months ago I was live streaming and had Peachy (our 31 year old rescued Moluccan) on my arm on camera. I was trying to get him to step up onto one of the trees (Peaches is my husbands bird and we share an incredibly similar relationship to each other that you and Rocky share😂). Anyhoo, he gets into these moods sometimes where he wants to cling to me and not leave. We have multiple trees, so everyone is watching me walk around the room trying to gently coax him into stepping up on a branch, any branch at this point 😂 After numerous attempts on almost every branch in the room, he got tired of me not "listening" to him and clamped SO HARD down on my arm!! I had zero reaction. I just calmly left the room with him on my arm, got him some banana, brought him back into the room and with the banana, was able to finally get him to step up on the tree. When I rejoined the chat on the stream, not one person even noticed that this whole drama took place right before them! I couldn't believe it (probably, because I didn't react at all). I had a welt and bruise on my arm about 2 inches x 2 inches for more than 2 weeks! 😂😂😂😂😂 Thank You for the vid Marlene! Another fun one 💗

Ive been wanting birds for a while, and your channel has inspired me to adopt a bird instead of buying a baby bird, which is what I had originally planned on doing. I ended up rescuing two quaker parrots about 8 months ago. They are my first birds ever so it has been a little tough as they are rescues but also a mating/bonded pair (this makes them more aggressive according to the internet) At first I thought it was too much to handle. They kept biting and being overall mean, literally biting and then laughing. But I did not want to give up on them, they had been rehomed 6 times prior to me and are only around 3-5 years of age. I had taken them in and committed to giving them a forever home and I was not about to let them think all humans end up giving up on you. They are definitely coming along and trust me and my family more each day, sometimes they will allow us to give them head scratches - but only when their mate isn’t looking! Lol Something the female does is you will ask her to step up, she will put one foot on you to kinda grab hold, and then bite down as hard as she can multiple times only to then turn around and go back to where she was perched laughing. They find it so amusing, they are my little evil monsters. They eat out of my hand will perch on my shoulder/head and preen my hair and sometimes when they are on their perch, if i walk out of the room they will scream their heads off until they can see me again. This leads me to believe they might like me even just a little. My point was, thank you for always talking about #adoptdontshop because I would have never met these little troublemakers otherwise. They are my first birds ever and them being rescues is hard, but totally worth the effort for their love and trust :) Hopefully one day they can feel comfortable enough to trust me as much as your birds trust you. Love your videos and keep up the amazing work!

Hes never bitten me hard,only broke the skin enough to bleed a bit. But im on coumadin blood thinner because of a mechanical heart valve ,so any injury that causes me to bleed is not good . Worst bite I remember (actually not me but my Dad got bitten): Our cockatiels were breeding. When my father wanted to check on the chicks the male was in the nest. The female would let him look into the nest and even push her aside to look at the chicks. The male on on the other hand ... Just bit into my father's index finger and just hang there. For about a minute there was a bird hanging on my father's finger until he left the aviary and the cockatiel flew back into the nest.

Oh my God that's so scary I totally get it especially when they latch on and don't let go ️ ❤️

@@MARLENEMCCOHEN my lovebirds were the other way around. The male Lala has always been very gentle and doesn't bite, but he has tried to protect the nest sometimes. The female Lulu is the real threat... especially when she has eggs (were changed to dummy eggs by me, anyway). Lulu is known to attack when she sees a hand. When I failed to be super concentrated (eg when my budgies made a sudden scream out of nowhere), Lulu latched on my finger but I'm glad it's less than a minute each time. I always tried to shake it off...and she always hangs there for a few seconds... I'll see if I can stay more still next time.... I better not have any bigger birds as I don't think I can handle worse bites! All my birds are recuses too. They are from the local shelter and we were lucky to adopt the young lovebird pair... they were only 9 months old when we got them.. just almost as young as those you would get from a pet store... it's been almost a year, they are doing better and better, Lulu is less and less aggressive even though I don't think her aggressive personality will be fully transformed... but animals are still super cute no matter what!

I really love big birds, but I'm honestly glad that I only have lovebirds. Their bites hurt, but they can't really do any bad damage. And I have to be honest, if got bitten so badly I probably would be to scared of the bird to handle him properly anymore. And that would be bad for me and the bird.

In a week I will receive an African Gray as an a adopted rescue bird.... Love your posting here. Been listening to books on Audible at work. Found books on Bird behavior. Listen and watch everything I can on youtube. I have been doing this for two months. A new co-worker had a bird and was describing his bird relationship. As a single person, I am so looking forward to the companionship. The more I read and study the more I wanted to do this. I know it is going to be a lot of work, and I can see through to the rewards. This will be my first bird. The bird is three years old. I have been told that the bird is very sweet, and good natured. Rescue is taking her to the vet. This has taken two visits. General check up and wing clipping. It has taken extra time because of the virus. I am so excited.

Wow. I would of never figured I would've been a bird person. I'm one with being outdoors live for being outdoors listening to all the birds and water going by. Kind of like theropy for me . My daughter is 14 and we have 3 cockoteils. Then we got the second one and he was so hard to figure out. Took so long. But well well worth the time. I'm trying to catch up on all your videos. My daughter showed me your channel. Very informational. Keep up the great work. It's going to be a video marathon thing today I can tell. So many more to watch. Your birds are so awesome. Stay safe everyone.

I get mean and nasty comments that really effect me and think that I should stop making videos but then I get awesome and nice comments more than the nasty ones and I keep going. I block the horrible people and delete their comments and continue but yes the nasty comments effect us. I got a nasty bite from my Senegal but it was my fault as she was on my husband's head who she loves the best so she bit me and would not let go, I did have to shake her off.

The worst bite I’ve had was from my sun conure, he was hormonal all of a sudden and bit me on my lip twice. He’s been biting for about 2 months now and now my female sun conure is doing the same thing, but it’s not breeding season and both of them are really friendly. They both just became aggressive out of nowhere and nobody can go near their cage without the male trying to bite you through the bars. I’m not sure what’s going on, it could just be hormonal but they’ve shared a cage for about 6 months and have never done this before any ideas on why they’re acting like this
@stephyboo32054 жыл бұрын
That sounds alot like hormones! Have they molted recently? :)

This is totally unrelated to the video but I believe that Leo might me a hybrid between a Red -Browed Amazon and some other type of Amazon!! What’s really amazing is that if I’m correct this is going to be such an important thing since the Red-Browed Amazon is almost extinct

I’m not sure what type of amazon she was told he is but I googled the red-browed and see the resemblance! Especially the eyes!

Even if the bird is parent raised, has been in a cage for the last 10 years and never let out you can take it home and it can become a well rounded companion, it just takes patience and mutual trust. Thanks for showing me this Marlene, I rescued a male Eclectus and he is the sweetest bird I have ever met, if not a little moody.

Don’t know if you remember me mentioning this before, being you have over 147K subscribers. But over the last 15 years, I’ve been part of a animal rescue team in NJ. I’ve “fostered” over 40 birds. I can’t think of a breed I haven’t had in my home. From parakeets to Macaws. Shortest time fostered being 3 months to longest being 8 years. And being the full believer of engage not cage, all the cages were left open daily and all the birds been handled (with love and care) daily. I have to say I’ve been EXTREMELY lucky to never been bit by a single one. My ex girlfriend on the other hand... 😂 My Galah never bit anyone but her. My two Eckies never bit anyone but her. My cockatiels never bit anyone but her. Etc. etc. etc. And every time it happened, I’d look at her and say “what did you do?” As in, why did they bite you? And all I ever got was the look... like, “how was it MY fault?” And I always have her the look... like, “trust me, it was”. And she had the same conversation with me that George had with you. “It’s me or the birds”. Needless to say, she left me over year ago. 😂😂😂

Oh my gosh one time this quaker was on my shoulder and I didn’t know him that well because he was new. He just randomly started attacking my neck, pinching and pulling up on the skin!! Omg it hurt soooo bad. I didn’t react because you’re not supposed to with birds or they learn it’s a game so I just sat there and took it and cried 😂 someone finally realized I was over there crying and came and got his off me because every time I tried to put him back on his cage he went back for my neck 😭😂 it’s funny now that I think about it.
