There is something therapeutic about writing that you don't get from typing notes. And treating notes like a journal is nice, it turns it into a good memory that's you can connect to. Makes it more exciting and memorable to look back to. It takes time but you do get something back

Something a teacher told me once which has stuck with me: Wikipedia is an *encyclopedia*. You cannot cite encyclopedias in most research or writings. But, they can be an excellent starting off point to guide you to further resources. Encyclopedias are usually good and trustworthy. Wikipedia is highly monitored and is usually trustworthy, or will at least put a footnote in if the information is dubious. But neither can be cited. They are guidance for research, not research itself.

I'm really excited for this video and for you to explore self education this year. I've never had the opportunity/privilege/funds to attend a proper university or college myself, but I am a voracious self educator as a result. Over the years I've tried out many tools, techniques, and explored learning websites such as Skill Share, Udemy, Master Class, and of course KZbin - all with varying degrees of success and failure. Even at 32 I would honestly still give up a lot of things to attend University and acquire the certificates and accolades that come with being a dedicated and accomplished scholar, but I think it's supremely important for people to understand that furthering your education beyond what can be professionally provided to you is just as valid, valuable, and important to pursue your whole life long.

I knew a girl called Imogen who used to literally experience 'personal ecstasy' with excitement over new stationery. She got a first from Oxford in Classics but ended up retraining as an actuary chiefly working in the Ryman's distribution centre. Not a convential path but fair play to the lass, she clearly gets off on it and no harm in that, and those envelopes aren't going to audit themselves!

Ruby, I'm so glad that you mentioned independent learning. I believe that institutional learning is important and necessary in many specific fields, but that it is only one part of learning. There are still new things that will come up and also new ideas or discoveries that you may make and you're going to have to self-teach yourself these things. If you create a new invention or process, the inventor is the "first person" that has to learn how to use their own invention. That's why all of the skills you learn in school, are still relevant as we grow up to be adults. Also, I'll try the Oxford English Dictionary, maybe. In America, they have the Merriam-Webster Unabridged Dictionary. I hope you always stay a lifelong learner, Ruby. I've spent years self-learning and I can honestly say, I enjoy and have taught myself more than I ever learned when I was in school. Isn't that interesting? Thanks, Ruby! It's great to see that you've accomplished so much and you're able to share with us the newfound wisdom you have.

I had great plans for independent studying after I finished my master's. But as soon as I received my diploma in September of last year, all my motivation went away. For the first time in almost 10 years, I haven't studied _anything._ It has been my year of brain rot and it has been so nice and relaxing. On Monday, however, I will start PhD prep work in bioinformatics. I've already done a soft start with a 3-week traineeship at the natural history museum.

I love love love that you mention self-learning in this video! While I respect institutional learning, that's not something I can do right now, despite being a lifelong learner and the fact that I have studied at the university level before... It's mostly due to disability and the government support I get doesn't allow active college studies if you're granted financial benefits in Sweden. That's unfortunate... But what I do instead is that I learn about topics via distance learning and mostly completely by myself via online courses. Sometimes the courses have tutors and sometimes not... I like learning by myself though. I feel like I'm actually skilled in the topics I'm pursuing even though it's just via self-learning! I liked your tips and will use them in my studies for this autumn. Lots of love from a Swedish viewer!

Regarding your interest in following the methods of other independent learners - I highly recommend having a read of Anne Lister's journals and indexes as they are fantastic, and highly detailed records of her self-inscribed education. She did have some tutors, particularly for music, but the majority of her adult education came from her own precisely organised engagement with classic literature, contemporary publications and periodicals (though she did also move to Paris for a while to access public lectures which were not closed to women).

Honestly, Wikipedia is such a good website. I am a taxonomist and on almost every organism page on Wikipedia there's a box with the complete taxonomic hierarchy and distribution maps. Many taxonomy websites aren't even that specific. Actual research professionals in taxonomy use Wikipedia to look up taxa because it's so detailed and easy to access. I'm also bilingual and do quite a bit of translating back and forth. Google translate is useless when it comes to specific terms, so I use Wikipedia. I either find the wiki page on the subject and switch over to the other language. Or, I read a wiki page on a related topic and see if the term I'm looking for shows up.

Forgive me for asking, I don't want to sound rude or anything, I'm just curious - when I was younger (11-18 years old) my parents (especially my mother) demanded from me having good grades, as well as working at home (cleaning, cooking dinner for the whole family etc.) and on the farm. My grades *were* good but nowhere near what you have achieved. My question is: with the amount of study time I've seen on your channel and the time you also spent enjoying things it looked like you had close to none house chores (or other chores for that matter) to do. Is it true or what I saw was exaggerated?

As an IT engineer I can say that self learning brings a lot of waste of time because u will be learning around a lot of unimportant stuff, and at Uni u have curriculum and guidance from the professors - u are flying in one direction and it's a vector. Also at Uni everyone is doing the same thing as u, so motivation is easy to get.
@VicvicW
@VicvicW 19 күн бұрын
A mentor (teacher, professor etc) can certainly expedite a learning process, but independent study certainly is not a waste of time. After all, as you climb the academic totem pole, you engage in more and more self directed study, because beyond a point no curriculum exists. You're in uncharted waters. If you only ever learn what other people tell you is worth learning, you cannot learn anything novel, and novel connections between bits of information become harder and harder to find.
@user-xm4bo4qp5c
@user-xm4bo4qp5c 17 күн бұрын
@@VicvicW I haven't said that it's a waste of time but that it becomes inefficient, you're going to spend a lot more time and big portion of it would also be useless in the end. There is also a question of motivation and keeping up the pace. I agree with you 100%, specially when it comes to research! But again I would stress on efficiency - there is a reason why students spend their time together at Uni and then in libraries, social interaction, motivation etc. Think about it - how many things in life u have learned just by hanging out with certain people, be simple social interaction, chit chat, learning by the way without even being focused on etc.

@@user-xm4bo4qp5c it brings a lot of waste of time isn't grammatically correct statement in English, so no, it isn't clear. I try not to correct people's grammar usually. You might say something like "a lot of time can be wasted in independent learning" which I would also disagree with. There's very little you can learn that is wholly useless, and you never know when some random fact about plants, for example, will help you solve a completely different question. After all, being intelligent is all about taking disparate concepts and drawing connections between them.

Ruby, the day you set foot to Oxford (leaving high school behind) was the moment you initiated self-learning with the Oxford dons acting in the capacity as pedagogical guides to steer you in the right direction, more so, to prepare you for the labour market. Lectures just regurgitate what you've already read in assigned readings for class. The difference being the professors give you in-depth insight and context to the course materials. Independent learning is not as revolutionary as you make it out to be because you're doing it already🤓 Enjoy the rest of your weekend

I suppose that in this video you are referring to the previous academic year that you were engaged in self study. I thought you got the masters degree from Oxford in 2023. Am I wrong about that? I’m getting confused about your timeline.

I believe she started it on October 2023 and has just recently finished before this summer. She took a gap year between bachelors’ in Exeter and masters’ in Oxford. She’s never stoped self-studying though because as you can see she’s quite fanatical about learning about any random topic that interests her. Apparently she’s making learning the biggest part of her personality
