yeah drawing pocket knife while someone is pummeling you is way harder than many people think. Even doing something like, sitting in a chair and having your training buddy come up and touch you as many times and fast as they can while you try and get that out of your pocket becomes hilarious. The number of times I've accidentally thrown a training folder rather than draw it is embarrassing.

I think this is a very insightful video, but I would just add that the best thing for a person to EDC depends massively on what their goals are, what their level of training is, what their environment is, and most importantly what situations they are primarily concerned about preparing for. Bottom line, your EDC needs to be justified to you and you alone, and by that same token you are accountable for your EDC and the decisions you make with it (good or bad).

I pretty much carry the same. An olight, a tactical pen, a knife or utility knife or both. Like you said about willing to lose or breaking an item, I usually try to carry cheap knife's. Utility knife's are great because they can easily stop being a weapon by just removing it's blade. Great vid.

Good recommendations and good video. That said, I carry a 9mm pretty much wherever I go, along with a Skallywag Tactical MDV Plus One, Coast HP3R pen flashlight, extra mag and other tool kits in laser cut card form in my wallet. If I am to use a knife in defense, I will be doing deep concentric or straight cuts to limbs to disable movement of said threats when the opportunity arises or I make it arise. If the opponent is an overpowering deadly threat, I will be deep stabbing and slashing the groin area to quickly bleed out if things go my way. That aforementioned knife is perfect for that purpose. EDC is based on your experience and comfortability with your tools. What you carry and works for you is fine, but the claim that anything else but your kit isn't useful is nonsense. Having been in a few non-training altercations I tried to avoid but could not on duty, i can say my tools worked very well and they weren't your particular set up. Just a mention. Im not knocking you, but more so suggesting you tell your listeners to pay attention to what they carry, where it is, keep it in the same locations for muscle memory and please train with it. Most knife companies do provide trainers for that purpose.

@@CombatSelfDefense I keep a Mag light (10 or 12 inch) in my back pack, & a little off-brand tactical flash light that I only carry at night (vest pocket). My everyday carries are a switchblade (Guardian tactical, legal in WI) in my pants pocket, pocket knife (cold steel) on my belt, a Kubaton-like key-chain (a tiny metal Thor's Hammer key-chain, which I think is usable) & a thick, heavy wrist watch (Citizen), which falls into the "jewelry" category, for blocking & backfists.

Nice post. I’m a fan of a powerful flashlight having used it in an actual self defense situation. My preference is the E2D but it does say defender on it. Most security, Disney and Universal, have no problem with it. Court security didn’t blink at it. I don’t know if TSA would be cool with it. How about an international segment of this topic? Headed to England next year and wanting to know if a small powerful flashlight like my E2D would be allowed. If you have covered the topic please refer me to that post. Thank You for the great posts.

Everyone has different ways, I’m a carpenter. I’m also a martial artist for 40 years and rather large. Still in really great shape. I tend to carry a folding razor knife in my front pocket, and a folding knife on my hip. Usually observer, something with a backlog really strong. The first is obviously for work and the second is too. The second night so could come in handy in a shelter phone scenario has really cut the razor knife. Generally in my truck I have a very bright flashlight with crenellations at one end for smacking people if necessary. I rarely if ever carry a firearm because they turn every fight into a gun fight. Do you know the old adage if you have it and you don’t use it they’ll take it from you and use it on you. Luckily for me, the things I carry tend to be tall and I’m really quick on the draw with my tools. When I’m not working, I always have a good pocket knife. Those may vary, depending upon how I’m dressed and where I’m going.

I really like the Atomic Bear Rebel pen as it doesn’t look tactical at all. The KZ Stinger is a bad ass tactical pen but really looks the part. Counter attacking with a knife will be considered use of lethal force in any US jurisdiction whether you kill your assailant or not- and knife vs. knife is a pretty dicey proposition. So you might as well get a gun. Also a gun can be used to restrain someone at a distance, while a knife cannot.

I carry a flashlight, tactical pen and pocket knife that idd are interchangeable as striking weapons. More importantly i wear cargo pants a lot (even if it raises eyebrows at times), and distribute those 3 item across the pockets, my keys and cellphone and wallet(not all the money i carry is in my wallet alone) are never in the same pockets as those items and one of them is in the lower leg pocket because that pocket is harder to cover when someone mounts you or you end up in (full)mount because your side pockets or appendix carry(for a knife) can get jammed up more easy in a scuffle. I wear lightweight but sturdy walking/hiking shoes/boots most of the time for grip and ankle protection (spraining an ankle happens faster then you might think in a scuffle). The items are below 60euro's a piece so i'm willing to surrender them to law enforcement or ditch them to avoid trouble with law enforcement (a 50euro pocket knife isn't worth going to court/jail over). I am European so a concealed carry firearm isn't a thing over here. tldr; 1. flashlight 2. tac pen/multitool 3. plain pocket knife conform with laws and societal expectations...no tacticool shit. 4. clothing to enable the carry of those items with easy (enough)access but concealed enough to not upset other people and draw unneeded attention. 5. most importantly: a brain that understands what, why and where i carry that and the environment i live in. 🤔 6. Bonus: i also i have 2x 2meters of paracord braided up into a improv keychain on my keys.

here i disagree mr texan. The olight you have is great at your nightstand, for EDC i would go with one of the warrior mini 2 or 3 lights, the ability of these flashlights to blind is the main point, it deters and help you if you have to defend yourself and yes theyre great for striking and also to fill/protect your hand, the pen wont blind anyone

@CombatSelfDefense I agree with you on the tactical pen and the flashlight as impact self defense tools. The Kershaw shuffle 2 is meant as a utility knife. If you press down on the very thin handle both slabs will move giving the real danger of the blade breaking away or folding back inwards and cutting your own hand. Probably the biggest question is for you, is you live in the "great state of Texas".. Why are you NOT practicing your 2nd amendment rights? You can easily carry a firearm concealed? Your state has the BEST carrying laws with little to NO restrictions and not labeling a firearm as your top three self-defense tools, is a bit odd.... Unless you have something in your background and you can not purchase and carry legally, which then would be more understandable....

My first question, where do you live? What kind of cookie cutter lifestyle do you leed? A gun is like any tool it's very nice to have if you need it. The odds of being attacked according to you are slim, what rock have you been living under? I know better...most folk do. Martial arts in a street fight are a waste of time, especially if whoever you fight fights alot... you need to do a fact check of the odds of being attacked in a violent crime.
