There are a few unhappy comments in relation to the resolution of this video. My mistake during the export, apologies for that, but you can see full test videos for the lenses mentioned in full HD if you check out this blog post (www.vintagelensesforvideo.com/top-3-lenses/) where you will find all the relevant links and more useful info. More than that, I will be doing the 2018 edition soon and I will make sure to get it perfect this time round :)

I woud say Helios 44-2 is total shit compared to Asahi 50mm f1.7. Just try to get lens with serial number not more than starting from 4. Older ones have nice redish tint in video so amazing

Hello greetings, what is your opinion about the Helios 44m-5 version is sharp as 44m-5 ?? produces the same type of blur? thanks in advance for the answers a hug, Another question, have you tried the olympus om-system zuiko mc auto-t 1: 2.8 f = 180mm ?? how about the bokeh?
@alanbesedin
@alanbesedin 5 жыл бұрын
Jaime Dos Santos hello. I haven’t tried the 44m-5 version, but new versions were suppose to be sharper, but have less character. I’m not sure if 44m-5 has same bokeh but I suspect it does because it’s the same optical formula. I haven’t tried the Olympus 180mm, so can’t comment on its bokeh

canon fd 50mm 1.8 (only recommended on mirrorless cause the adapter w/ glass will absolutely destroy the quality), 50mm industar 3.5, yashica 1.7 ds-m my personal favorite. all of them have excellent sharpness and bokeh. best part is they are cheap

Quick questions: Where do you buy the focus ring adapters ? Are they rubber? I have a nifty fifty Canon 50 f1.8 that has about 3 mm wide focus ring that is practically useless for any manual focusing.

Alan, do you use a dummy-adapter or on with glass on the FD-lens? I´m getting a 50mm 1.4 and need to get a adapter for my BMPCC but I want to get it to EF so I can use my focal recuser. Do you do it this way? Thanks alot :)

I now have all three of these lenses - great post. The Canon FD 50mm is indeed *incredible* - like the OP says, used on all my jobs (I shoot 80% video) and probably in 50% of my shots. Just an outstanding little lens and best of all costs peanuts. Because of this actually I don't use the Helios very much which I should do more often. The 35mm Zeiss is again amazing - I have the weird-looking Exacta mount which is way cheaper; added bonus is the incredible macro feature I had no idea it had. Thank you for these reviews and anyone watching, get these lenses you can't go wrong.

I have a question Alan or anyone else knowledgable.. I have a Sigma 50mm f2.8 macro which is true 1:1.. It is a Canon FD mount.. Altho I'm super happy with the results I'm getting from this lens, i would like to supercharge it.. Which would be a better option a reverse thread macro adapter or an extension tube? Thanks in advance

Thanks for your post, I've been doing KZbin for years with pretty basic equipment, I really loved the way that first lens looks, I was just wondering what camera you are putting these lenses on. I have a Nikon d7000, I never use it, do you recommend Nikons? Or is the lens more important? I know these might seem like really basic questions.. sorry about that..

You *can* have the 50mm f/1.4 *clickless* by choosing a right focal reducer (or adaptor) for it. I bought a camdiox focal reducer that has a ring that changes the aperture of the lens clicklessly. To enable it the lens aperture ring must be set to A. The ring on my Camdiox may be just a bit on the stiff side however.

Hey Alan, Are vintage lenses a bit darker than regular AF lens? I'm using Visitar 28mm F2 MC on a canon 7D and the metering is several stops under expose compare to the same setting when i use my auto focus lens. I'm using a OM mount to EOS from Fotodiox.

It should be fine with an NX to M42 adapter. You won't get as much swirly bokeh with just an adapter however (the NX500 is APS-C as opposed to full frame), so if you want to preserve that effect you'll need an NX focal reducer such as the NX-L, which are hard to come by. From there you'll need a Canon EF to M42 adapter.

nope. better buy new lenses nowadays. the reason is - lenses have risen in prices because auf bloggers and youtubers like you. things i got for 5$ at the fleamarket 15 years ago now are 100-500$... for used, dusty, flary, not really sharp stuff. its ridiculous. because every lens needs a service after decades (cleaning and adjusting). so today lens price + service cost = better buy a new one. so today i mostly use new lenses. it looks cleaner and sharper than old lenses. and if i want shitty look of 70s, with all those "cool" flares and "nice character", i can do it in postproduction. also, new lenses you get often more luminous intensity. most older wide angles end up in f2.8...today you can have a 24mm with 1.4.....
