We are just two days away from the Washington state lowland lake opener and what a better video to talk about than the Yakima Bait Flat Fish. This is one of my most consistent big fish producers over the years. There are two sizes that are my favorite: F-4 and F-5 Flat Fish.

Everything in this video is right on! I fish from a kayak and the slow, rowing motion imparts killer action. Caught many large fish using lead core line trolling a flatfish. Add or subtract colors to optimize depth. Find where they are holding and repeat! I would also add Florescent Red color for deep trolling.

I have used the gold, chrome, fluorescent orange and frog colors and caught a bunch of trout. I lost around a 10 lb rainbow right at the net on the orange. They work!

The first time I ever fished these lures was about 25 years ago. It was a small stream with a split shot about 16" above the lure. I could not believe the reaction of the trout turning to go after these lures. I was hooked for life and a go to fishing lure on a slow day...

For me, my Top Two are Florescent Hot Pink or Orange, #3 Silver, #4 Gold, #5 Yellow w/black spots

Great video.Love the Flatfish vintage and new as well as kwickfish which gold is Golder. The old frogs are different no crackle Finnish. Do you like the old frog Finnish

I've been looking up these lures because a buddy of mine gave me one but I haven't seen it on shelf's today but it's a flatfish. So far I've discovered that Yakima bought out the patents and molds from helin which started in Canada. The one I have has three treble hooks in a frog/ bluegill color. It's about 3 to 4 inch's long. I don't know if you know the history of this lure but now I definitely don't want to be tossing it if it's a true helin flatfish I'll just buy a Yakima one. But I'd figure I'd share to you what I have learned about The flatfish

Yes I’m many cases. If I am fishing from my boat then I usually run a 1/4oz weight 2’ above the flatfish. From my float tube a sneaky way to fish them is a slow troll on a full sink fly line. Absolutely deadly. They work great off a down rigger as well

Derek Barton really depends if I am catching and keeping or releasing Fish. I like the single hook when not running bait or scent to make it easy to release. Trebles work great for keeping fish since they tear up the fish's mouth

Hey Rick- I've never trolled flatfish before; do they dive as you pull them along (due to the lip) or will they stay at a consistent depth?

DifferenceMaker they do dive slightly but not very much on the small sizes more or an erratic action because of the lip. Great for running with some weight 2ft above the line, on leadcore, or downriggers

Direct tie works best. Yes the work great behind an attractor like a Dodger or flasher

I do! Or if I plan on doing more catch and release I will swap out the treble for a single siwash. Thanks for the question!
