A fun thing you can do is call the suspect to the door. Close the door and then charge it. It bursts open the door and then knocks out anyone who is close to it

The game is very confusing, but I'd recommend if it's the murder case, to fuck off and do side jobs for a while, so the killer does it again and you can check a new crime scene. It's still in Early Access, but also sometimes you just need to get a bit lucky I suppose. if you want a tip... Check the doornob into the corpses apartment, chances are the murder had to come and do the deed. While a poisoner doesn't have to do it in person...But people still have receipts to buy food.
