HeyJaani, Something I learned while incorporating the Dan Beto drill into my X-step. It not only syncs my weight shift and timing, but it makes coming through that super deep pocket you are wanting, pretty much feel automatic. Oh, and the disc always seems to go exactly where I am aiming. I first use the Dan Beto move to aim and inevtably adjust my grip for a smooth release, cause it's always just a little off. Then... I will start my walkup/runup with the disc already in the deep pocket position (RHBH), and give it a slight pump at my target as my right foot first touches the ground (before the crossover) in the X-step. It tends to over exagerate my weight shift into the plant, but it syncs my balance/timing up beautifully, and gets my body perfectly oriented to my target. For those that don'r know or are just learning... "Your balance is your timing". It makes the disc feels like it's uncoiling into the "reach-back", and naturally wants to recoil straight back forward into the same super deep pocket spot it started at, accellerating through and out effortlessly on it's own... buttery smooth, with massive spin, and exactly where I was aimed. The disc does seem to move along the more straight-back to straight-thru plane, as opposed to an out-in-out path, but the elbow is always up and out, without having to think about it. Everything feels really natural and practically automatic for me after that little pump at the target from the deep pocket. Have to let me know if it actually produces the same positve results for others, as it has for me.

Dan Beto drill is the only drill one needs. It's got all. And with new clients I always start my lessons with it. And, funny coincidence, I filmed a video just before this where I do the Betodrill with a full runup and try the bent-arm reachback. I wasn't satisfied with what I did there, so I won't publish it, but yes: you absolutely can throw full power shots using the Beto drill as your final technique. Thanks for the comment!

I tried this today (deep pocket) and it's funny that I read this comment because I think I finally experienced the "tendon bounce" phenomenon written about in Blake T.'s DGReview lore. No matter how many times I did the Beto drill back in the day I never quite understood this tendon bounce thing. But immediately after emulating your deep pocket motion and voila, much improved uncoiling of the arm. Throws were going farther with noticeably less effort (smooth power). I think the spin rate got amped up doing this because my flippy discs were easier to send into pushing hyzers and going as far if not farther despite not getting full hits (it was wet so my bracing sucked).

Being able to cogently describe what you are feeling, seeing, and doing is a special talent on its own. This sort of video has a lot of value, particularly to show people how many different pieces and components go into good form.

Just off the top of my head but I feel like Kyle Klein does a good job of creating a deep pocket with his swing. Maybe a slow mo analysis vid in the future? As far as future content, I say keep on doing what you're doing. Best instruction vids on the YT, brother.

Very much agree with what you say at 10:00, where sports are a game of feel. For me in ball golf, I can feel when I have a good swing, and then try to figure out what swing thought caused that. Teaching, like what you're doing, is then mapping the feeling to words that others can understand. Not an easy task to figure out what that feeling is and get yourself to repeat it, and being stuck using words (in non-native language for you) is that much more difficult. Good stuff again.

I recently worked on getting into a deeper pocket doing much of the same thing you are. One thing that really helped was making sure my first move after bracing was curling the disc in. No hip or torso rotation yet. I had to go very slow and really exaggerate that to get the feeling down. A mental cue that helped was thinking about throwing the disc behind me. Really overexaggerating things is helpful when making a big change, and throwing from a deep pocket is actually quite a drastic change.
@dgspindoctorАй бұрын
Nice thinking there, bravo!
@elusivemoose2325Ай бұрын
Not directly related to the power pocket, but @ 2:48 the exaggerated motion you're looking for on the follow through is reminding me of Niklas Anttila's follow through. Specifically how his trail arm sweeps almost behind the shot instead of punching down like Drew Gibson and Paul McBeth's form, or pinning tightly to his left side like Simon Lizotte's form. It seems the shots you feel better about getting into that deep pocket are ones where you're trail arm is sweeping behind a bit more (closer to Anttila's form), and on the shots where you're not feeing as good about getting all the way into deep pocket your trail arm is pinning tighter to your side (closer to Lizotte's form). Maybe the sweeping trail arm is letting you feel like you have more time to get into the deep pocket before your shoulders begin to rotate through the shot. And you feel rushed and not enough time to get into the deep pocket when your trial arm is pinned to your side because it's allowing a faster shoulder rotation through the shot. Probably because this deep pocket move is a new movement your body doesn't know how to get into as quickly as you'd like yet. I know the trail arm is not a thought for you at all in this session and I could be wrong, just an interesting observation either way 🙂

One thing I'd love your expertise on is the "straight pull." Ive heard so many times, reach straight back and pull straight across the chest (lets ignore the landmines of the reach "back," i know its a reach "out" and its not really a "reach" but an extension.) i have never experienced the throw as "straight" at all. It has always felt "out, in, out" to me, but so so so many describe a straight reach and straight "pull" (again, "pull" is another landmine id like to avoid, i know "pulling" is not really what should be happening.) The "pull" to me feels like its on the arcs of a circle, it traces one arc moving from out to in, and another arc from in to out. Anyway, you can see that im all tangled up in this. I trust you to definitively tell me what should be going on, so id appreciate you talking about that. Cheers. Love what you do.
@dgspindoctorАй бұрын
If you ask me, it's not even an extension 🤭. I think I already have made videos addressing these landmines. Thanks for the comment!

At 4:05, would you say that the palm (hypothenar/Palmaris brevis I think?) is over the disc? I’ve been getting diff results putting the disc in the middle or putting the palm over it. Just want your thoughts. I’ve noticed there’s more pivot due to higher range when the palm is over the disc, similar to turning a steering wheel with your palm instead of putting the wheel in your center and only getting

It is more over the disc, I would say.

What do you think about Leon Sonnleitner form? That is more a "Robocop" stance staying high with hip and shoulder rotation and the arm slingshot the disc out..

Leon is an 18 year old athlete who could compete in high level in other sports too, but chose disc golf, which he has done from a young age, coached by his father who also is an athlete. Let's not compare our roads to that guy...ever...again. ❤️

I have small hands so i pay attention to grip and nose angle alot in videos. I noticed that the way you are gripping the disc, that it keeps the disc on a different angle than your fore arm rather than in line with your fore arm. Do you get alot of off axis torque when you throw like that? It looks like something corrects it when you throw but i dont know what it would be. All the grip help that i have seen is to have the disc in line with your arm to reduce off axis torque and achieve nose down.
@dgspindoctorАй бұрын
All I know is that I can throw the ultimate disc and the Glitch without wobble, and as hard as any other discs.

I would try reaching a little bit more wide in front than back..easier to reach the power pocket from front than back maybe ?

Yeah, I think it all comes down to my back problems, and now also the back hip troubles which basically prohibit internal rotation
