Regarding the issue of buying sketchy black metal and music created by terrible people: we’ve all got metaphorical blood on our hands at some point in our lives from buying something. That shirt you’re wearing now? Probably created via sweatshop labour in Vietnam or Bangladesh. The water bottle you got from the store, or the shop if you’re from the UK? Probably packaged by the Nestlé company, which is one of the most corrupt corporations on earth. And it just goes on and on and on and on and on… So my point is: even if I wouldn’t personally buy physical copies of that Nokturnal Mortum album or that Arghoslent album myself, I don’t begrudge others for doing so because as I’ve said before, we’ve all got metaphorical blood on our hands from buying some things. It’s inevitable.

I’m left leaning myself (I’m more so center-left) and I totally believe in separating art from the artist. When it comes to bands like Dissection, Deathspell Omega, Drudkh, Angelcorpse, Mgla, Burzum, Kroda, Shining, Leviathan, Horna, Destroyer 666, and Inquisition; that’s easier to do. I really like all these bands and while the individuals behind that music are bad people, the art is no reflection of that. The next tier when both the artist and the art that they make is controversial is a bit more difficult to separate. I happen to like controversial bands such as Peste Noire, Goatmoon, Bilskirnir, Grand Belial’s Key, Arghoslent, Nokturnal Mortum, Satanic Warmaster, Hate Forest, and Graveland. With a lot of these bands it is harder to separate art from the artist since a lot the time the art is a reflection of the bands values. It’s totally possible to like bands and not agree with the ideology. I don’t listen to these bands often because of controversial ideology but I’m not going to pretend to dislike them if they make music I like. My view is, just like what you like and just be respectful regardless of what your views are.

You do have a point about how if we knew everything about the sources of what we wear and consume we'd have to stop or change a lot of what we do to be truly ethical. Like child slavery is practiced when harvesting cocoa beans for chocolate and sweatshops for our clothes. I'm still trying to avoid nsbm but I understand the logic of separating art from the artist. I think as long as their lyrics dont promote racism/transphobia amd they arent outspoken about those beliefs it could be okay to listen 🤔 anyway, as a Mexican woman I'm relieved you are not racist or sexist and have a "be anything you want" attitude! I'm a longtime fan of your channel 🤘🏽😄

I think what really matters is what you take away from the music or what it gives you that truly makes the difference. If you can get past some sussy lyrics and not be influenced negatively politically and morally, that is perfectly fine. Do whatever makes you comfortable, if you can't get past the lyrics, drop the band like first period French lol. I make it my mission to not financially support bands I like that I disagree with on those regards, but I will still listen to their music through other means if the messages don't affect my outlook or my comfort in listening to them. But regardless of what I listen to, I will always stand against racism, homophobia, sexism, authoritarianism, and bigotry in general.

I’m not sure you can separate the art from the artist when the art is something like NSBM. When the art is a direct reflection of the musicians bad values, what is there to separate? Like with hitler and his paintings, yes they are very beautiful lol, but he wasn’t painting himself killing jewish folks, and that’s why there’s that separation I think.

Even as somebody that does listen to bands that are unfortunately associated with that whole scene, I agree with you. On my channel whenever I spotlight a band like that, I always warn people that they are sketchy, and I never put links to them in the description (however, I just realized that I did exactly what I’m going against for the newest Satanic Warmaster record on my end of the year list video at the beginning of this year, so I’m not perfect and I feel like a bit of a hypocrite there… but at least it’s his stuff from after he ditched the racist lyrics).

I hear people repeat this, but it makes no sense at all. By that standard, can you not listen to things like Dissection and Emperor? Jon genuinely believed in the lyrics, and he ended up murdering someone. The art is only a reflection of the artist's views in terms of the lyrics. If you are listening to NSBM purely for the lyrics, then sure. But most people enjoy it for the music. It's quite easy to separate the art from the artist if you only consume the art for the music.
@samfishertags4904

@@faust8218 So like Burzum. Varg sucks and his views are shit, but nothing about the music or lyrics of Burzum reflects that. I am able to separate the art from him because it is not about his ideologies. Jon didn’t kill someone because he believed the lyrics, he killed someone because he’s a crazy person. And regarding the lyrics, that’s a great point because 90% of black metal vocals I can’t really understand what they’re saying without looking it up anyway. But idk I just try to stay away from NSBM
@faust8218
@faust8218 11 ай бұрын
@@samfishertags4904 Plenty of stuff about Burzum's lyrics reflects Varg's views. The anti-Christian themes are entirely based in his antisemitism, as he makes no distinction between the Abrahamic faiths, and believe they're all "Jewish". Jon's lyrics are a reflection of his beliefs, just like NSBM lyrics are a reflection of their genuine beliefs. The idea of ethical consumption goes entirely out the window anyways if you own a smartphone like Iphone or Android, which make use of child labor to acquire rare metals to build their phones. Who cares if you listen to some neckbeard's NSBM project who will probably use that money to buy a cheeseburger, when you are directly and financially supporting child labor with your purchases. Unlike some people that we know, I feel like we're welcoming towards anyone regardless of their political stances, as long as they aren't extreme with it. As I've stated before, you be cool with me and I'll be cool with you, it's not complicated. I don't necessarily agree with you on the religion thing, but I can see where you're coming from at the same time. I grew up in a Christian household, and while I still label myself as a spiritual person, I try to leave the "religion" part out of it, if that makes sense. I definitely agree on race though. Hating someone over what they look like is just plain dumb. You should just be nice to everyone regardless of what race they are, and that is the only right answer. Interesting vid!

Current day divides are about crushing spiritiualism imo. Being spiritual by definition ignores biological, political and cultural differences and lets us just see the person. It's obviously a dangerous perspective to have otherwise there wouldn't be such a coordinated effort to draw attention to superficial divides in all spheres of our lives. Sometimes it's fashion and ignorance though, I had a conversation with a young British man who seemed to think it was necessary to eradicate "The Republicans.". So, I said, you're advocating a dictatorship in the United States for the Democrats? Blank stare.

No hate here, but about you claiming Drudhk (I love the band myself) isn't far-right: Blood in Our Wells is literally dedicated to Stepan Bandera, a far-right Ukrainian antisemetic nationalist that collaborated with Nazi Germany in WW2. They even made a song about Ukrainian Insurgent Army, who commited ethnic cleansing. For you to say they aren't far-right is very weird to me, considering your centralist stance on everything else haha. Nicki Minaj once said " what you do when the camera is ON doesnt define you, it's what you do off cameras that defines you. It's how you treat yourself, your family and others that matters in the end" For example, I like Ariana Grande's voice. I dont like her music but I think she has a great voice. Though as a human being she sucks, what she does off the cameras sucks. So I agree with you, it's unnatural to separate the art from the artist. But the current world we live in is creating a gap between the artist and the art (at least on the surface of social media). But most people, especially the youth of today is using social media the most... So idk... I think social media only brings unnecessary problems that we are unable to solve since they simply don't exist in the real world. It's like AI stuff.
@reducetheatoms
@reducetheatoms 5 ай бұрын
Also, I think the Art doesn't belong to the Artist once it is published. Because everyone can find a different meaning in art, and therefore one piece of art can become a thousand different one from each person who interprets it with their own values and feelings and judgement.
@reducetheatoms
@reducetheatoms 5 ай бұрын
Which is why art loses its meaning when it is shared. At least that's how I feel. It loses its original meaning and creates new meaning depending on the person sometimes deeper and complex, sometimes shallow. So if you have a fragile heart like mine who doesn't like to have other's interpretation on your art then just create for yourself. But if you want to share it with the world and make others **feel** something, then do that then. It all depends on the artist. Again I'll take the example of Ariana Grande, but her new song " yes, and ? " isn't bad, until you know the history of the artist. 👩‍🦽👩‍🦽👩‍🦽👩‍🦽

Hmmm, hmmmmmmmm. Not sure if separating the art from the artist is always possible or ethical for so many reasons. I DO get why you'd want to pretend otherwise.

Questy. The difference on art is knowledge. If you went to an art gallery and half way through talking to the artist you are thinking of buying a piece of art, someone shows you on their phone that he is a convicted child rapist. Do you continue talking to him and buy the art or not?
@Questformetal
@Questformetal 11 ай бұрын
For sure I’d buy the art if it’s something I really liked yeah. I wouldn’t want to be friends with the guy though but still I’m not hanging the artist on my wall he’s not coming home with me just a piece of canvas with paint on it.

@@Questformetal Let's make this more extreme! If you bought a band t-shirt from a certain band and you like to wear it; it turns out, the band is full of pedophiles. Would you still wear the shirt in public?

Great takes here. Think I agree with everything. Politicians, scum. Trans"women" in womens sports, no. Religion, nonsense. NSBM, yes separate art from artists. Racism is not as cut and dry as people think. Yes, there are good and bad people in all races. But the culture is very different, in Africa and the Middle East the people really love Muhammad and Jesus. Though there still are plenty of reasonable people in these ethnic groups like Rana Ahmad and Ayaan Hirsi Ali. But is someone is a religious zealot I don't want to be around them and this applies to a good chunk of people in those countries. Though religious zealots are probably a problem everywhere apart from the Czech Republic and Estonia.
