I've had two '89 740 estates that had the same level of floorpan rust as this over the last two years. One I sold because it was too much of a project, the rear wheel arches and sills around the jacking points were all rotten and it went right up behind the axle into the boot floor, the chassis rails were just patches on top of patches and the floors and seam where the sills meets the floor was all buggered. The car was made of underseal, when I jacked it up the jacking points collapsed into the sills! Shame, one owner from 1993 onwards, stacks of history and it LOOKED really tidy on top and even had 6 months MOT when I picked it up, but it was only £300... I rebuilt my Triumph Acclaim instead, not much less rusty but it'd already proven itself reliable. Bought another cheap (£750) 740 and low and behold the front floors transpired to be made of hopes and dreams, that Volvo factory underseal and bitumen sound deadening does a damn good job of pretending to be metal even without filler! This one will see welding action as the chassis rails and sills are actually decent. Hopefully yours goes again! At least if you chop the floors out you can grind back and treat all the surface rust inside the chassis rails!

Thanks for sharing, I'm glad you said this because there's signs that someone started to sort this one out, some filler repair (not finished or even hidden) on the rear arch, new brakes, they started looking into the tailgate lock, new oil and filter it looks like and a few other things, made me wonder why on earth they'd do that with it having such bad floors, but maybe they didn't see how bad it was... that also explains how he had so many big slabs of rusted metal to layer in with filler, must have been a late discovery if it looked okay at a glance. Good luck with yours! I've been busy on this one all week!

Well, sorry to see this, it sucks that such a thing was hidden. It's in similar or even better condition than mine 760 turbo was, but at least I knew about the problem when I bought it. I just finished welding floor in both drivers and passanger sides and had a huge hole in the trunk floor(next to tailights). Can't wait for the next episode to see how you deal with this and don't be discouraged!

We decided today to vise a metal plate in from outside( removing the undercoating was impossible) and cover the seams with debrasel( this is polyester with 80 % metalshavings inside…it is well known by bodyrepairers, and used for strong parts of chassis. Its not cheap! 65 euros for 1 kg, but a nice product to have around, have you had experience with it? Its worth a try, you can consider it one step highetr quality then fiberpolyester, with the mighty + , it doesnt attract water, doesnt rust, and you can drill into it…you gotta love the product! Guys like you become happier with that product in the shed…

Oh jeeeez, that front is dreadful. The 740s always go there at the front of the footwells so I’m not surprised and the rest shouldn’t be bad.. I 100% feel the same about the car, I think she is worth sorting. All that blue trim looks so familiar, had a few interiors on 740s, the seperate carpets at the front are handy. That plastic trim gets very brittle

Bit of a bugger about that floor but happy to see your committed to saving the 7 as you’re right, it’s too nice to scrap/part out (this from a Volvo agnostic) but I was surprised to hear you say it would of passed as is, as I thought in Germany they were pretty strict on their roadworthy tests? Keep up the good work, cheers from Oz.

If it ain*t a lot of rust, buy some rust preventer, or COD-15 to convert it to metal, and patch up the holes,,but put a rust treatment on, the 740 is in much better condition than the 240 wagon that was falling apart
@Involvod
@Involvod 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I'm going to try and cut out and grind back as much as possible, but the frame will definitely need a treatment. I feel better about this one as the 240 had structural issues, this one seems much less severe, even if the holes are technically bigger 😃

yep, the early 700's do suffer from rust. Volvo gradually started to make them more and more out of galvanised steel. That's why the later 700's and certainly the 900's have way less rust. Your car might have had a leak at some earlier stage of it's existence. The moisture collects in the carpet and starts to rot out the floor of the cabin. But as far as i could asses it's still saveable because the structural sills are still solid. Welding in a piece of sheet metal or a rust free section from a juckyard car should be doable.
@Involvod
@Involvod 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, they certainly seem better than the 200, at least. Thanks, that's the plan, hopefully the frame cleans up nicely 🤞
@mayflowerlash11
@mayflowerlash11 2 жыл бұрын
I can't tell how glad I am to hear that Volvo gradually improved the rust resistance of their cars from the early 700's to the 900 series. Because when I bought my Volvo to replace the '84 240 I sold years before, I settled on a 940. The 240 to 940 are so similar I reasoned that Volvo had to keep improving from model to model. The original 240 was a brilliant design and it just got better over the next decades. I hope the steel patching job goes smoothly for you.

@@Involvod One tip about welding is you can only weld to nice shiny steel, you can't welt to rust!!!! Mig is probably easiest, don't try an arc welder as think steel is mega difficult to weld with arc. Get some scrap car panels to practice with. Watch lots of youtube vids and good luck. Oh don't forget auto darkening mask and gloves. I once tried to teach my self to mig weld, I practices for about an hour, next day woke up with severe burns on hand, the intense light can burn skin!!!!!
@Involvod
@Involvod 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I didn't know that! Definitely going to get all the correct equipment (for once) and i've started on the YT videos, watched a crazy old Aussie fella that said "it's just like using a bloody hot glue gun" which gave me some confidence 😄
@ched999uk
@ched999uk 2 жыл бұрын
@@Involvod Clean metal and the right settings on the machine help big time. Hot glue gun mmmm I would say not that easy at all. Basically a mig melts metal with a big current, you need the mig wire close to the metal (1mm ish) so that it 'arcs' then maintaining the gap will create a molten pool of steel, you then move along the joint keeping the arc and pool going. So the speed the wire comes out is important as well as enough current to maintain the pool. If you are welding in a section to make sure the panel doesn't distort you have to weld a small 1 inch section then move to another side and repeat - stitch welding. I am sure there are decent youtube vids that show it much better than I can explain. Have at least 1 bucket of water handy in case anything catches fire! Good luck.
