I spend a week with the 2020 Hyundai Veloster Turbo Ultimate. The as-tested price of this one is $29,215 and for that price, this car is targeted towards a buyer that cares more about high tech features like a head-up display, wireless charging pad and heated leather seats rather than performance. Overall it's a great choice for someone who wants something different and fun, but with the very similar Kia Forte GT using the same engine and transmission and packaging it with more luxuries and space for less money, the Veloster Turbo Ultimate may not be the best value in this segment. The best values for enthusiasts are still the R-Spec and N versions if you're looking for performance. Nevertheless, I'm glad it's still possible to get a fully loaded Ultimate trim for those that like all the features in this quirky package and hope Hyundai continues to offer the Veloster for a long time. What do you think about the Veloster? Thanks to Hyundai for providing this vehicle to review.

really appreciate the fact that you review the same vehicle(s) with different transmissions (especially for more than just a quick take.) A lot of reviewers only review one or the other, and it's difficult to find someone who has personally driven both transmission options.

I am a fan of this rather unique vehicle and am glad that they make them. Sadly I along with many others don’t have the money for multiple vehicles 🚗. The Veloster N is sweet as well but I am not that comfortable with a manual, so thankfully they will have a DC Auto soon. I don’t like the powder blue so I would get it in a different color, just sucks that they only offer the interior with the N Performance Blue seat belts and accents. So I probably would go with something like this one that you’re driving. I like the funky interior and enjoyed you and Beth’s video about it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts as always Matt.

Great review. R Spec Turbo all the way! It is a bargain for $20,000 right now! :) It has an amazing stick, great safety features, lightweight, fantastic grip+tires, and just an overall great product!
@jasoncampbell7765

@Rubedo Alaberti That is an incredible bargain for what you get. The R Spec weighs only about 2750 pounds which is lighter than the N versions... Get a couple of performance mods plus a VR Tune (totals about $1,500 in parts) and you will have a lighter weight version of the Veloster N with similar power.. :)

Totally agree with you in that I’d definitely choose a different version of the Veloster personally. Wish Hyundai would dial in the Ultimate trim just a little bit more. Still cool that they offer so many versions, though, and love how unique the Veloster is.

Hi Matt, is the 2021 Hyundai Veloster Turbo Automatic recommendable? Reliable commuter car?
@klasseact6663

Matt, I've been a subscriber for quite some time and I've had my 2018 Elantra Sport w/7 spd DCT for 15 months and 17K miles and saying "the most unrefined DCT on the market today" is a bit extreme❗What's next, the Stinger is a great car with a "cheap" badge...🤔🙄 Btw my 2018 ES with SXTH Element CPLT intake and JUN BL axle-back just got 39.7 mpg on a 408 mile round trip from Chicagoland to Grand Rapids. I did 70-75 mph the whole way there with the A/C on, so driven right they get GREAT mileage! I've got a best of 40.5 mpg making the same trip with less A/C usage. I'm still here😉

You know I love the Stinger Klasse. I’m always honest and in my experiences the Hyundai/Kia DCT has the least smooth engagement of any 2020 model DCT I’ve experienced, I’m sorry to say. Just trying to call it how I see it. Elantra Sport is a great car and like I said here and in the Forte GT video, the DCT isn’t a deal breaker, I just wish Hyundai/Kia cared enough to improve it. Even the camo’d prototype Sonata N-Line I drove had an engagement feel in the brand new 8 speed DCT and I told the Hyundai engineer that I hope they smooth out the engagement at least for that new one before it comes to market. It’s really the only downside of the automatic Hyundai/Kia performance vehicles.

@@MattMaranMotoring well said Matt! I'm sure once the new wet clutch DCT hits the streets it will be great because it has to be because of G T I 💡 I know your being honest but I wish you just phrased it differently because my car feels great and to be perfectly honest, what your experiencing makes it feel like a REAL stick shift car and because mine was bought CPO it's the closest thing in have to a stick right now. That said, I love this car, leaps and bounds better than my old, modded Abarth and performance wise the ES would blow the doors off of the Abarth, no contest🏁🏁

I’ve been reading Veloster N forums and people have been getting the Performance Pack model for $28,500 OTD even before the pandemic and $26,500 more recently. Even at $28,500 AFTER TTL, I just don’t see how anyone could choose any non-N model for the same money. If they want a nicer interior then they shouldn’t be looking at a Veloster anyway. You can get WAY nicer interiors in plenty of new cars for under $30k. I’m really wondering if Hyundai will shuffle the Veloster models in 2021. Once the DCT N releases it will end up outselling the regular Turbo Ultimate for sure if they don’t bring that model’s price way down. The N will also hold value much better than any other Veloster so the only argument left is a “nicer” interior and it’s not even THAT nice in the Turbo Ultimate lol. I could see a huge price cut in the Ultimate or them just making the Ultimate interior an option package for the Turbo rather than its own trim level.

Matt, your comment that Hyundai and other manufacturers believe that customers who want manual transmission want a "stripped down interior" fails the recognize the actual dynamic at play in this case. Consider the following. () It's indisputable that the vast majority of American car buyers want vehicles with transmissions they are not required to shift. There are exceptions, of course, primarily "sporty" vehicles with small engines, (e.g. Miatas, GTIs, Civic Type Rs, etc.) But those whose priorities include daily commuting and those who want the ultimate in performance metrics such as 0-60 mph and quarter mile times overwhelmingly prefer a two pedal vehicle. Without exception they're quicker. When the daily commuters and the performance junkies are excluded, the market place for MT's is very, very limited. () With that in mind, a manufacturer have strong incentives to build vehicles with the widest possible appeal. In this effort they face countervailing pressures. Offering more options (e.g.both MT's and AT's) may mean a wider appeal but it also means a more complex and therefore more expensive production process. Unless a particular option attracts a sufficient number of customers to pay for itself, an automotive manufacturer is better off not offering it from a profit perspective. () That same profit motive is even more powerful among dealers, the folks who actually buy vehicles from manufacturers. With the exception of Tesla, dealers, not consumers, are the ones who directly determine the mix of models available on their lots through their orders. And the profit margin on a new vehicle is relatively small. Not as small as the dealer will try to convince a consumer by offering to show a potential buyer the "invoice" price they paid for a vehicle, but new car sales aren't the main profit center for a dealer.Service and used car sales are typically much more profitable on a per vehicle basis. () Furthermore, dealers don't purchase vehicles outright from a manufacturer. They finance their purchases and pay "flooring charges" as long a vehicle sits on their lot. The longer a vehicle sits unsold the less the dealer makes when it is finally sold to a consumer. And like the manufacturer a dealer will hesitate to order a model they believe will be a slow seller. () Higher trim models are far more profitable than base trims. Popular options (e.g. leather seats, better infotainment systems, optional convenience and safety features, etc.) more than pay for themselves and improve both a manufacturer's and a dealer's profit margin. Dealer installed options are the most profitable of all and dealers often add a few on every vehicle on their lot. But they're profitable ONLY if a vehicle sells. () The vast majority of automobiles sold are available on a dealer's lot. Not from an order sheet. And the quicker a vehicle leaves a lot the more profit a dealer makes. The last thing a dealer wants is an expensive high trim model sitting on the lot unsold for weeks or months because it has a feature (e.g. a manual transmission) that few buyers want. If a consumer purchase is less certain, a dealer is more likely to order a less expensive version to minimize the risk and minimize the flooring charges until the vehicle is eventually sold at a steeper discount to attract a buyer. And of course, if few dealers order a particular configuration of a vehicle a manufacturer may well stop producing it at all. () The bottom line is not that the #savethemanuals crowd want only stripped or base models of vehicles. It's that enthusiasts lavish affection and attention on their vehicles. Manufacturers and dealers, on the other hand, see vehicles as commodities; a means to the end of generating profit.

2021 VELOSTER N HAS 8 SPEED AUTO DCT NOW!!!!! :DDDD. long Opinion... from a , unexpected, Proud owner of A Hyundai 2020 Veloster Turbo Ultimate with Pinkslip and all. I traded in my Impreza 14' (base bleh) thinking of getting 2020 Accord Trbo sport(to big, not special), WRX eh expensive and still cheapy, VW(nahh), I cant drive manual all day to lack of limbs haha. This means no Type R even SI!(xpensive asf). Then iI found the Velosters 'new, clean/sharp/purty trim' ignoring the fugly prior version from 2013-2016, . U MUST at least get the turbo trim, it looks and comes with more features and amazing warranty i use much. I get 28.8 Mpg, after 6.8k miles (trip) from average to rippin it ;) but with sport mode/high revs easy 36-40mpg. The car handles so freely and floats hitting corners and it smart/fast. I work for a wholesale++ Auction Tech company working out of my velost. with a large virtual lift tons of tools, jump boxes, equipment. I love the surprising sized trunk and 3 door design to get my large lift rear third door. while working. The compact size makes it easy to get around crowded places. Sound slaps stock too and great infotaiment. Making this my first very car I plan on driving all the way past warranty expires and or getting the 2021-22 Velost Turb N
