This Veloster was available when I chose to buy my Elantra GT Sport. I thought the extra room, true hatchback style (Similar to VW Golf) was a better option for a 69 year old guy who still likes a car that handles well, but is on a retiree budget. I don't do much city driving because I live in a country setting, and thus, I get over 33 mpg with the 7-sp DCT.

The GT Sport would be my choice as well. I'm hoping they can give it an ultimate manual trim like they do with the Veloster then I would totally be in with that, but the normal GT Sport Manual is still a good bargain, especially since you can get it for about 20K.

I've always been such a fan of the Veloster shape and concept; trying to split the difference between a sports coupe/2-door hatchback and a more practical economy sedan/4-door hatchback may seem like a silly compromise to some, but this is a space I can see myself existing in. A Miata is a blast, but despite their economy and relatively comfy ride and decent use of the space there is, it's a chore to live with everyday for most. The Veloster is the next rung or rung and a half up the practicality ladder, and I think Hyundai did such a good job of being ALMOST as practical as the next category up in car while just being smaller, more unique, more fun, more interesting! It's a refreshing and unique compromise in the car world, and I appreciate that Hyundai took the risk when nobody else did. There doesn't need to be a vacuum in this size and type of car; it's a great car for a lot of drivers!

I bought the 2.0L. Hyundai's reputation with the 2.4L Theta II turbo engine is not exactly stellar but that's not the reason I didn't get it. I went with the 2.0L base model because it's simple. From transmission to infotainment. Not a lot can go wrong and easier to upgrade in the future. I prefer naturally aspirated engines but I do confess that it's not as exciting as the turbo. At the same time Hyundai went with the 2.0L Nu MPI Atkinson engine. If they used the previous generations Elantra GT 2.0L Nu GDI engine (174HP naturally aspirated) the gap wouldn't be that bad. Can't really attest to fuel economy because you have to put effort to drive economically lol

Impressive little car and much like its Kia cousins, Hyundai does an excellent job of improving shortcomings even within a particular generation of their vehicles. That, combined with Hyundai's excellent record of reliability and warranty make for a compelling package. I'm impressed by the third door option. Some may consider it a gimmick but I'd have to say that the back seat of a Mustang or Camaro is the true gimmick. Totally useless. I owned a Mazda RX-8 with hidden rear doors and found it added tremendously to the flexibility of the vehicle. Must say, though, I don't envy a fourth passenger seated behind the front seat passenger. (My RX-8 had four doors rather than three.) I suspect that fourth spot is reserved mainly for transporting small hostages or those who, once in place, will eventually die of old age. I'm also a fan of the DCT option. I own a GTI and love an "automated manual" transmission (as Alex correctly terms it). Combines the advantages of a manual and an automatic transmission. It's a perfect compromise as far as I'm concerned. I do wonder about visibility in the Veloster. I haven't driven one but when I pass a Veloster on the freeway I make sure to pick my spot and do it quickly just in case the driver can't see me. (I do the same with Camaros.) But since Alex doesn't mention it, perhaps it's not as bad as I think. Of course, many of the viewers of this video are actually lusting after the forthcoming Veloster N. Personally I'm disappointed that the US won't be seeing the larger i30N but apparently Hyundai believes the performance version of the Veloster is a better budget competitor for the Honda Type R in North America. How much of a bargain it will be will depend on whether Hyundai dealers can resist putting a second "market adjustment" sticker on the vehicle. I'm not optimistic on that score but perhaps I'll be surprised. As far as this version of the Veloster is concerned, it's likely to be a viable option for those who want something that looks like a Veloster N but for whom the $30K plus sticker is a bridge too far. And since many of the Veloster N's advantages are useful only on a track, the buyers of a vanilla Veloster may not be missing that much.

Here’s a general question: why is it that the interior trappings, technology, etc. is always of a lesser grade on compact/subcompact vehicles? In other words, why does the size of the vehicle affect the features and interior quality available on it? The manufacturers seem to have all colluded on this point.
@v13r3r6 жыл бұрын
Because statistically speaking consumers with less money go for smaller cars and can't afford that stuff. It's also easier to put luxury items in a larger car (less engineering). Then again, that is why luxury brands exists. The new Benz A Class hatchback is gorgeous inside and out. At least in person.
@lowlanz6 жыл бұрын
Because normally, in the smaller sized categories, more bucks makes it as expensive as much larger vehicles and most people will just go for larger vehicles when this happens. That's why, unless it's an established luxury brand like Mini, smaller cars don't get luxurious interiors.

@@Donkeygrapes, yeah I'm sure that B and M short shifter makes a heck of a difference. It's always commented on in video reviews. Would love to see that shifter as an upgrade on other models.

10/10 for the front seats? Are you sure you're being objective?

They are honestly very comfortable. Way better than top trim corolla, civic, ect and honestly more comfortable than and Accord or altima.

You say you're comparing to subcompact models, but then give the car scores based on the Civic or a Mini which are clearly not direct competitors.

Yeah. I thought the same. The S line top of the line is just tad more than the Veloster turbo tech.

How much does Hyundai charge you for the rest of the car? Lol.

It has "Germanic" feel is no surprised. Aren't Hyundai Kia done these days by bunch of Germans?
@rockefelleragent13576 жыл бұрын
Both German and Korean it's a joint project. The germans tweak the suspension design and tuning. The R&D at Namyang (which partly symbolizes "N" not just Nurburgring) is from Korea. All the engine and chassis parts are produced by Hyundai. Don't jump to conclusion too easily because some german engineered helped design this car that is only flip side of the coin u know what i mean

Stopped watching after 4 minutes The Title states this video is for the 2019 Veloster "Turbo" thanks for wasting my time by constantly talking about features the Turbo model doesn't have.

Looks cheap . Hyundai is known to be the ultimate cost driven auto oem. Cost savings > quality, performance , and sadly even safety to them.

Seriously? Have you ever been near a Hyundai in the last 5 years?

Jis Yang the number one ranked deadliest car is the Kia Rio the number 2? Hyundai Accent. Korean death box. I am an automotive engineer it’s well known Hyundai motor group is willing to comprise anything (including safety ) over saving pennies. Don’t be mad because I’m spewing facts be mad at Hyundai for designing death traps. Anyone who works in the industry knows this

@@ehabaleid1093 Look at the crash test ratings on their new cars. They aren't worse than any of their competitors. Hyundai and Kia were usually bought by people who didn't know how to drive (cheap econobox, perfect for them), that's why they suicided in them. Those who survived bought more from the same brand so the stats linger.

@@jisyang8781 It's just sad. Many people are against Kia and Hyundai the same way he is. If everyone could appreciate their cars for what they offer... They would sell more than GM combined. I like them for 2 things above all else. 1. They make interiors that don't creak and rattle. Sounds like a big duh, but I can't tell you another brand that doesn't have issues with rattles under 50k dollars. 2. Powertrain. DCT. DSG created a horrible reputation for all DCTs and they are fighting that. And they are winning.

OK. I searched your 'facts', because you didn't even provide sources(and now I know why you didn't) and found that your numbers are based on cars manufactured between 2008~2011. How long ago is that? Can't believe someone is actually using figures from 10 years ago to back their opinion. If you're allowed 10years to search a negative statistics on any car company, there's no company that can get away. You sure remember Toyota killing people? Plus, you said no.2 was Accent, but it was Nissan Versa and no. 4 was Chevy. Now you can't buy four of world's best selling Motor companies, 'cause in your words, they sacrificed safety at least once. You should really go find out how Hyundai has climb up the ladders in last 5 years. Nowadays their cars get 5 star safety ratings from US/EU/Insurance associations etc. For example the latest Santa Fe got safety score as good as Volvos. Their initial quality rank had been topping since several years ago and no surprise that this year they beat vehicle dependability rank against Toyota.
