I spend a week with the 2023 Honda Civic Type R to see what it's like to live with. With 315 hp all going to the front wheels, everyone knows the 2023 Type R was going to be fun to drive. But what is it like to actually daily drive it? Overall, it's a great daily driver as long as you come into it with the right expectations, but there are a few important things to highlight about the experience. What do you think about the 2023 Civic Type R? Thanks to Honda for providing this vehicle to review!

I understand why the comparison is made between the Type R and the Elantra N and as much as I love what Hyundai is doing I just don’t see the Elantra being able to deliver the same reliability long term, especially if modified

Cool that you still drive these amazing rides Matt. Used to watch all the reviews way back. I dont even know which Civic Type R looks better, this or the older gen. They both look sweet in their own way. After getting rid of my MK5 VW GTI, I will forever be a fan of hot hatches. So much fun to drive in a busy city, compared to a bigger sports car I feel. You can just put your foot down and rip around, all zippy, while not looking so obnoxious because they aren't super fast. 😂 Really love that a few companies still offer a fun manual car in 2024. Civic Type R, GR Corolla, VW GTI (or Golf R), Focus RS. Slightly modded, I would love any of those. Such a fun style of driving. 🔥

Ive been wanting a CTR since they were brought back with the FK8. I'm finally financially at a point now that i've been graduated and working full time for a few years where I can afford it but just don't wanna play so far above MSRP for a used 2020 or 2021 but I prefer the aggressive styling. Anyway all that to say I'll be pulling the trigger this fall or next years and I'm so pumped and hearing you talk more about the CTRs gets me that much more pumped!

Coming to this video a bit late, but I’m curious if you were spending a lot of time in +R mode when you commented about the lack of obvious traction control. I spend most of my time in Individual mode with the suspension in Comfort because the roads here in Michigan are lousy. When I occasionally put it in +R mode it definitely feels like the TC is much less intrusive. In rain and with my winter tires still mounted I can break the tires loose in just about every gear when in +R…

Thank you for the informative video! I've been going back & forth trying to decide which new car to buy. For price, practicality and fun, I was thinking the Civic SI which has a wonderful 6-speed albeit a little down on power rated 200 hp. (If only the SI had 220-240 hp). The hot hatches don't have the 'down on power' problem, obviously, but they lack the overall thrift of the SI. Sitting here, I still can’t decide! My local Honda dealer is willing to give me a good deal on a Type R. These 1st World problems make me realize how lucky we are!
@MattMaranMotoring
@MattMaranMotoring 10 ай бұрын
I'm glad the video was informative for you! If you can get a good deal (MSRP or less on a Type R), I'd say take it since it's pretty much zero risk. You either love it and keep it or sell it for an Si and at the very least break even on the Type R, or possibly even make a profit selling the Type R. Even used 2022 Sis seem to be selling for MSRP still.

The Si and the Type R are so very different. I had a 2015 Civic Si and a 2018 Civic Si HFP. The Si severely falls off on the top end. I now have a 2021 Civic Type R and it pulls so much harder all the way through the gear and doesn’t fall off at all. Not to push you into a higher priced car, but the Type R is so much better. My advice would be a 2020 or 2021 after the refresh.

The problem is you cannot test drive them for the most part, there are no paper brochures, they are all sold, you basically have to trust internet reviews or put your money down first. I would love to buy a paper printed brochure at the dealership and would gladly pay $5 or $10 for it especially a limited edition sport model like this brochure, heck they can make money on it. Plus picking one up in person, gets you in the dealership next to the cars so a salesman can sale to you instead of the internet. I am surprised dealerships are not using limited edition brochures to get people in the dealerships. Type r type s gr r gti n fans would show up in drives pay ten dollars for it as a collectors item. But you got them. In your dealer speakership to see all of your cars, that stays with them. Now only car shows seem to promote cars with brochures. And a test drive is a must at $50 k year or more loan, or 3 year lease . I mean really? No brochure no test drive $50k+ Not. .dealers are getting cheap and pretending to be green

I'm surprised you hated the Golf R so much. I guess the bad throttle response in comfort mode left a bad taste haha. For me, I chose the Golf R 20th because It's a much better all arounder. AWD grip, drift mode, sophisticated DCT trans, feels like more power than advertised (3.9 0-60), way more features, real carbon fiber trim, great handling, proper quad exhaust, nice adjustable suspension (feels like a luxury ride in comfort mode), customizable ambient lighting, every interior/exterior light is LED, and feels worth every bit of $47k.

You gotta drive one to understand I guess. Rear-biased AWD, a peaky motor that reminds you of the Evo/STI days of rally machines for the road. You're right that if you're not interested in AWD the Corolla is worse on paper, but it ends up transcending the sum of its parts to be a really special experience.

@MattMaranMotoring I can respect your opinion. However, the rear biased awd system, doesnt help the car rotate as much as it does push the car into understeer on track when pushed hard.The car felt a tad bit underpowered to me and was not eager to rotate at the limit. No oversteer at all, just grip for days (everything was off). I was getting more oversteer in the FL5, believe it or not, (by doing the pedal dance). I can’t say I agree with your weather statement, any car will perform worse in slippery weather with summer tires so as long as you get proper winter tires on this thing there should be no issues driving in the snow. Not saying it will outperform a GR Corolla, Golf R or another comparable AWD vehicle in the snow but if this was a Mustang or a RWD front engine car with a lot of power then I’d agree no matter the setup it won’t perform too well in winter.

I'm in the Process of buying one of these! I got the money and I'm gonna be cashing it instead of loan it I hate loans! I'm gonna pay it cash! But before that I'm gonna be selling my 2017 Honda Pilot AWD I hate SUV! I'm gonna be buying this car because I needed something that is California Legal since I lived in Texas I can't visit my relatives in California with my 900WHP Mitsubishi Evo X or my 1250HP Nissan Skyline GT-R R-34 because they are illegal in that state since I don't have cat converter on those cars they're deleted and their Specs are illegal as well they are built for Racing! So I needed something that is California Legal and at the same time with descent enough power and torque since my Ford F-150 and my 2017 Nissan Titan V8 are gas eaters and they're only my workhorses that hauls trailers and my tools for my everyday jobsite. For my personal commuting vehicle this Honda Civic Type R is well adequate enough. It's got descent power! 315hp is good enough since the car is so lightweight and I'm surprised! It's got Torque! 308! Not bad!!! I'm gonna be picking up mine next week! But still I'm gonna keep my Mitsubishi Evo X and my Nissan Skyline R-34

Cool car, but it’s not that cool even at $50k, and especially not for anything over that. It’s a FWD 2.0T Civic. Yes, it handles. Yes, it’s “rarer”, but it’s still “Civic”. Don’t get me wrong, I think 2.0T FWD cars are a blast to drive. I mean, I own one (2017 MK7 GTI 6spd). But I also bought my GTI brand new in 2017 for $23k! That is literally 1/3 the price of what these FL5 CTR’s are selling for, and I guarantee I would be able to punch my GTI as fast through a canyon l, than those buying these FL5 CTR’s! I’m not trying to say my GTI is as good as the CTR. I know it isn’t. But it was 1/3 the cost NEW! The FL5 CTR, as cool as it is, is way overpriced! May I also add that my MK7 GTI is ~400whp/420wtq currently, and it didn’t cost me that much to get it there either. Just saying.

Gearing is trash on the 6mt gti as its too long. I like my car as it's still very clean and paid off, but the de5 and fl5 are very nice cars. @@briangasser973 perhaps, but then the second owner overpaid for a used civic type R, that's all that happened. His cost of ownership will be way more than a used elantra N. The upshot is that, residual values being high are due to this car being limited production and so expensive to begin with that more people are forced to buy it used. That is artificial of course, they could simply make more units like competitors such as the golf R do. If the integra type S was the same price as golf R and the civic type R was 37$ k, those would be fair prices in my book

It was bad in the Golf R because it's rated higher, so it underperformed what VW says it should do, and it's also bad because that was with the car driving around in its regular mode that never wanted to downshift and was essentially lugging around at 2k the whole time. I drove the Type R way harder and still got the same MPG. That's why the 22 mpg is more impressive in the Type R.

I enjoy your quality content. But, please, I hope one day you'll realize that torque steer is a bad thing. It's not fun or engaging or the "opposite of a brainless interaction." @MattMaranMotoring
@MattMaranMotoring 10 ай бұрын
I understand that torque steer has traditionally been a negative trait, but as the times have changed and stuff has become more sanitized and "perfected", I think these days it adds a little bit of excitement versus something that perfectly puts down power with no drama. A lot of great cars throughout history have been loved because of their flaws, that's often what gives them some character.
