My Wife Doesn't Respect Me. What Should I Do?

Our live caller explains that he's tried to be positive, but his relationship with his wife seems to be getting worse and worse... they’re co-parents right now, and she has a lot of negativity, hate, and guilt in her heart- but he wants to fix their marriage.

Dr. Joe Beam explains that when someone wants out of a relationship it's either due to "pushes" or "pulls." "Pushes" describe something in the relationship itself that pushes the spouse away. "Pulls" describe something outside of the relationship that's pulling the spouse away.
Dr. Joe Beam asks this caller to consider if there is a big enough "push" out of their relationship, or if there a big enough "pull" out of their relationship.
This caller's wife may "feel" controlled and dominated, even if he didn't intend it. "How is it truly affecting the other person?"
If your spouse perceives your actions as controlling/domineering, rather than defending yourself, we recommend that you examine yourself. Ask yourself the following questions:
-Is there something there I really need to change?
-Is there something I need to be less intense about?
-Is there something I need to understand about the other person?
Remember, are you hearing what the other person is feeling? You really want to get to what your spouse feels. Learn what kind of emotions they're feeling and begin to understand them. And from this place of understanding, you can begin to fix your relationship.

"Not in love" means she's not attracted to him anymore. She's actively working to replace this guy while he's trying to get back to what they had before. Maybe he should actively work on bettering himself so if or when the time comes, he can upgrade. I think she feels she can do better. Maybe she can in the short term, but if this guy makes stay improvements, he can win in the long run. With her or someone else in due time. I wish him well.
