New Zealanders also have steer axle trailers & have been way ahead of our neighbors across the ditch & were using B doubles well before Ozz land true fact. Those log trucks again are far superior units than what you see in the US still using semi tractor .A rigid truck/strait truck is far more efficient in terms of traction & ability to carry a greater payload.

You were south of my hometown Stockholm. I hope you felt welcome. I am an old man and used to pass by often Scania in the 1960s. Even at that time it was Scania (Then Scania-vabis) the coolest trucks. The weather is as it always is. You were almost below the 60 degree latitude. The Scania factory in Södertälje is on the same level as Southern Alaska. I hope you will come back to Sweden one summer day. A trip through Sweden would take you to a world you didn't know existed. About 98,000 lakes and a nature that is free to stay in.

Amber did well driving the trucks, she kept a nice steady pace. The gas engine is designed to run on LNG. Gasoline is called Petrol in UK English. And if you ever going to drive a car in France, Spain or Italy, don't fill up with Gazole, Gasoléo or Gasolio, this is not gasoline but diesel! All the merch in the dealership just shows how Scania is a lifestyle amongst truckers. And the old Scania L75 is a true classic, I remember these when I was a lot younger, you would still see these until the mid 1980s. It's a bit surprising that you don't see that many knuckle booms in the US, they are so useful on trucks delivering building supplies or prefabricated building parts, machinery or shipping containers without having to depend on crane hire. They do cost load capacity but often that isn't a big problem in these applications.

I'm curious to see Bruce do some backing whit the logging truck. This is the most common configuration we have for logging trucks, the guys who drive them on a daily basis gets quite skilled when it comes to backing and turning around whit the so called "dolly-turnaround". They're really more nimble than you'd believe.

13:00 When I was hauling tank containers in the Gothenburg harbor we had slightly longer wheelbase trailers (same overall length, just shorter overhang). This so we could load more, so instead of the regular 44 tons for a regular semi truck and semi trailer, we had a max gross weight of 50 tons. So, to make it slightly more maneuverable and to reduce tyre wear, the 3rd trailer axle would turn when going forward, but straighten out and lock when reversing. Not bad for a truck that's 18 years old and a trailer that's 12 years old.

Nice video. Driving an unfamiliar vehicle, loaded, in this weather can make you nervous. The gear reduction (AP-Achse) is not to get more torque, it serves to keep the upstream components smaller because they have to transmit less torque because it is reinforced at the wheel hub. The differential of the smooth-running axles is definitely twice as large, gets warm and reduces the ground clearance. The cardan shafts are also much stronger and heavier. With the AP axes everything is much thinner and lighter. On the other hand, consumption is higher with an AP axis and they are louder. However, the drive shafts of both tend to shear off. We have already shredded quite a few, especially with the MAN 4x4 off-road. The beast often tears the universal joints apart and the impacting drive shaft then tends to remove components.
@squidcaps4308
@squidcaps4308 3 ай бұрын
Thanks, i was just wondering what benefit there would be for planetary gear hubs. Now i know. It is a bit the same with electricity, deliver power at higher voltage and use a transformer closer to the destination to convert the "torque". That allows to use MUCH thinner cables for the long distances.
@PropperNaughtyGeezer
@PropperNaughtyGeezer 3 ай бұрын
@@squidcaps4308 Yes, that's a good comparison. Even with the losses when transforming. Gear hubs axles also almost always have brake drums. At least I don't know of any with brake discs. They have the same braking power but not as smoothly and evenly, but they last 3-4 times as long (300,000 - 500,000 km). If some people then have a transfer case (for 4x4 or 6x6 drive; mine also has two gears; road and difficult terrain), the drive shaft from the manual gearbox to the transfer case (is this the engl. term?) is almost tiny. The gearbox is just as big but with a correspondingly higher gear ratio. Same with retarder. Former the retarders used to be huge and mounted at the back of the gearbox. Today they are so small and integrated into the gearbox. But with high rpm. You can also get them with different translations. For long journeys with maximum torque at 90-60 kmh and for short journeys with maximum torque at 60-40 kmh. It only has 50% braking power at high speeds, but you can brake the truck almost to 10 kmh in the city or off-road. For 90-60 you have to use Jakebrake additionally. They have them too, required by law. But it switches on automatically and not as loud as in US. You just have to downshift manually if necessary. We (at least the good drivers) use the foot brake very sparingly.

28:40 Bruce! As an american you can get the VAT/Sales tax refunded at the airport when you take things with you back home. The sales tax is 25% so that means you get 20% of the purchase price back. High end retailers will be used to this, but probably not the Scania gift shop. You need to get a VAT refund form with the purchase and you go to customs with it at the airport.

well, like most European transportation that was and is being built, first of all, it is the comfort, the quality, and milage, then come performance, even with the cheap ones, as on the other side the American-built machines are concerned on power, and some useless specs, I haven`t met any European driver that knows what transmission manufacturer his car has... and also having huge competition (compared to the almost non-existent one in the USA) on the market has its benefits... we have more Luxury car Brands than the USA has car manufacturers...

You should do a video on foden or Leyland DAF, ERF these are the most common trucks that you will find in the UK. Also Volvo but there are everywhere.

None of those manufacturers exist anymore MAN shut ERF down , Paccar shut Foden down and Daf pulled the Leilani name off their trucks in the nineties

Man I hope they can give you a show of our transfer trailer earth movers, I think they have em the same way in Sweden as ours in Finland. They are sick, and a bit more advanced and a hell of a lot more heavy duty than the ones I have seen from the USA.
