I only found your channel this past week and your content is king. Above average is the best goal for most and you deliver the message very well. If Jen wants to do her own channel someday, you’ll have all this footage she can use to show the journey. I’m sure my wife would subscribe to hers. We both want “normal” people to follow that aren’t super-athletes.

You are really rather hunched over. This is usually a sign of poor flexibility. I'll wager that you are BELOW average for flexibility. I recon you'd struggle to touch your toes. And so there you have it. Get yourself above average and vlog your journey.
@searchtime

@@mrscreamer379 I'm not saying your'e right about Mark, but in general men (especially older men) don't focus on flexibility. Both men and women have a tendency to undertake physical pursuits that they are naturally better at. More often than not women will concentrate on yoga, pilates etc while men will lean towards strength based exercises.

This is going to be a fun journey. The whole "above average" mantra has really stuck with me. Finished my 2nd 10k race today... Dropped my PB from 53:37 to 50:41 and finished 101/405 overall, 94/219 by gender and 12/29 by age. All above average. Not awful for a 50-something who started running late last year.

You are spot on when you talk about ‘above average’ being a wonderful place. I’m a 57 year-old female who ran for the first time at 2.5 stones overweight 5 years ago. Now I consistently scrape into the top 50% of all the women running my (tough) parkrun at Temple Newsam in Leeds. My VO2 Max is 40 - that of an average 20-year-old. Every time I make ‘above average’, it feels like standing on a podium. I’m going to enjoy Jen’s journey. Good luck to her!

Excited for Jen. My wife and I did our first decafit (hyrox light) together last month. While we weren’t “above average”, we crushed everyone who stayed in the couch that morning. My wife has gone from total sedentary to marathon finisher in the last 12 months. I’m super proud of her. I’m training for a hyrox, trying to talk her into doing that with me. Keep up the great stuff, love your videos.

Really good Mark. I am 61 and just trying to get closer to a 30 min 5K and complete a 10K again without my hips giving out. Would love to do a half one day but we will see. I think that even though you are above - above average I think you do a great job of tailoring your segments to people like us. I watch a lot of marathoner channels, which I still find it inspiring, but once they get into their metrics or plans, I know that ship has sailed. I think we need more realistic stuff dedicated to older people (which is a growing demographic in the west) - or people who just want to upgrade their fitness game and avoid health issues in the future. Keep it up.

Just discovered your channel and binge watched a few vids. And...not only do you talk sense its inspired me. i`m 65 and until i was 58 was a fitness nut (marathons, body building and martial arts). Then a few things happened in my life and i tried to find solace in the bottle and drugs. i`ve killed those demons and still somewhat surprisingly in average shape for a 65 year old but i`m so unfit its laughable compared to what I used to be. And i miss that feeling of invincibility and the "buzz" being fit gives you. I appreciate i`ll never be as fit and strong as I used to be but i feel sure my body will remember and I know how to push myself and accept the discipline you need to maintain a programme. My first three month programme is simple, to build a base I can work with. i`m going to walk 5 miles 5 times a week, and do 2 ten milers twice a week, go to the gym every other day and use OMD 6 days a week with one what i used to call loading day a week when i can eat what the hell i want (all day). My aims are simple for the first 3 months. A) build a base so i can start jogging. B) Bench my own weight and increase overall strength by 15% across all exercises. C) lose a stone. When (not if) thats over i`ll re-evaluate. To use your car analogy. I used to be a top end porche, i`m now a beaten up old ford in need of new tyres and a good service and hope to be a well maintained and tuned up ford in three months time. P.S. great channel and I wish jen luck. .

I just wanted to thank you for your content. I'm in my mid-twenties nearly finishing my studies and you motivated me so much to get more in shape. This sounds like a good journey to witness, looking forward to seeing how things progress. The only thing is that what Jen did on the mountain 20 mile race was really impressive. If you took a thousand people with similar levels of (non-existent) training then she'd be above average as at least 500 would take one look at the first hill and say "f*** that" and go home. That she not only completed it but did really well suggests she's far more capable than we think. My youngest kids start proper schooling in September and suddenly my wife will have a lot more time on her hands. Hoping to get her into fitness a lot more and there is the odd encouraging sign. She actually mentioned the other day about joining me for a bit of a spin class whereas I've spent 3 years plotting how to manipulate her into doing it. What a waste of time that was.

Mark, thanks for your inspiration. Today, 38 years since my last one, I completed a half marathon aged 58 after 8 weeks since taking up running. (Due to buying the Fenix 7X , seriously awesome watch). I had planned on my first parkrun but that was cancelled so just went for a run instead. Scored 4 new PB's , my first sub 30 min 5k, a 1 hour and 1 second 10 k...(Gutted...) a 2 hour and 12 min half marathon and longest run to boot. Straight home and 15 mins in the ice bath (you should invest in one... awesome) Life can start at any time if you want it to.

I’m glad you’re self aware to know you’re “above above average”. I’m excited to see Jen’s journey. One thing I’ve been struggling with, which I’m curious to see if Jen experiences, I feel (and probably am) already “above average” fitness compared to anyone else. But when it comes to specific sports, I feel very… average. I struggle to commit to one specific training program, but I exercise regularly, often a combination of sports. But the dedication it will likely require to improve in one specific sport seems significant. How can I transfer “fitness” to specific sport training without necessarily dedicating myself to training for one sport be it running, triathlon, mobility, climbing, etc? Or do I have to dedicate myself to it? Is the answer that I have to accept much slower training progress if I don’t want to focus on sport specific training? Will Jen’s training for Hydrox apply easily to other things?

I’ve been training for (and just completed) a 12 mile trail race, and I was pretty pleased with my time considering I only started running in September. Nice one Mark and Jen. And yes, the inspiration continues. I found a running track near me after watching your Mo session. Loved it and ran at a pace that was better than recent sessions. Great fun too.

As I've just started indoor cycling (about 3 months ago), I can feel Jen's pain. I very nearly threw up during my first FTP-test. And yet somehow I'm still hooked. 😀
