This movie portrays two of the main philosophies of China represented by Master Oogway (Taoism) and Master Shifu( Confucionism). The first one focuses on the idea of the Tao, which translates basically to "The way." In essence, the universe has a path destined for everything, and as we are incapable of seeing or understanding the reason for events to happen means that trying to go against the Tao is futile, we should instead focuse on the present as is the only thing we have and trust in the Tao that things will fall into place as there is a reason for everything to happen. Confucionism understands the importance of everyone from the top general to the person who cleans the bathroom. Basically, everyone has a role to play. Therefore, everyone has to do and give their best at all times. You achieve this with discipline and control of yourself as this is the only way to control your life. The conflict we see in the movie is that Shifu tries to control the outcome while Oogway says to do your best in the present and trust that things will fall into place.

To expand on two of the Buddhist aspects of this film. It teaches that all sentient beings have the Buddha nature and therefore there is no need to seek for anything outside yourself i.e. there is no additional secret ingredient that you require. All the capabilities to become a great Kung Fu master, and then ultimately an enlightened being, are already within you. The Dragon Scroll represents "emptiness" or pure non-dual awareness which must be realised by stilling the mind, and then meditated upon until you realise your own Buddha-nature.

I love that the main difference between Po and Tai Lung is shown through their responses to the reality of the dragon scroll. In the end, Po is satisfied with the answer he got, which is “You are enough.” Tai Lung has dreamed of being the greatest for so long that now he could never be satisfied with that simple truth.
@pierrevulcan3683
@pierrevulcan3683 7 ай бұрын
Even more, they react differently in the moment. They both get presented with an empty scroll reflecting their face back at them. Po's response is "It's blank" which definitely speaks to self-esteem issues and his difficulty with creating his own identity from many different pieces, which will be a recurring thee in the trilogy. But Tai Lung? Tai Lung see himself in a blank scroll, the culmination of his journey, after the hardships, th betrayal, the destruction of everything he once care for. He sees himself and says "It's NOTHING!" Nothing. It's me, and it's nothing. That's when he lost. Both the fight, and himself, and to a degree the will to live. "All this...for that?" It's a common theme for somewhat sympathetic "the ends justify the means" villains. One sees a blank slate, the road ahead to understand the Dao, understand oneself to ascend. The other crumbles, faced with the emptiness. Such good mirrored characterization, and one of many special details in those movies!

Great reaction, Holden & Jen! I love this movie to bits. The fights & laughs are great, but the emotional scenes stand out more over time. Like when Tai Lung wins the Dragon Scroll, opens it, and says, "It's nothing?!". It looks like Tai Lung is talking about the scroll, but he is actually revealing how he sees himself. In his reflection we see confusion, sadness, anger, and disappointment. And a moment later, as Po affirms his own value & self-belief, he sees his reflection and smiles.

Tai Lung is a warrior who didn't deserve the treatment he got, he grew up thinking he'd become this legendary warrior if he only trained hard enough, and was disciplined enough, to learn everything he could, plus Shifu filled his head with dreams, pushed him in training, promising him that they would all come true if he hones his skills and abilities to the very limits, but when Oogway said NO, Tai Lung's world crumbled because it turns out that he had been struggling for so many years for nothing. He was furious and must have walked to the village because he was completely lost, or else he was telling everyone before how he was going to become a Dragon Warrior, and when he didn't become what he said he would become, maybe someone in the village angered him very easily, he was on the edge of snapping out of anger when he was rejected without an explanation, he just knew he wasn't good enough in Oogway's opinion. Later he spends twenty years in prison, immobilized, he finds out that someone is good enough, and then later he finds out that someone is good enough but is not trained, and disciplined nowhere near his level, Tai Lung is even more disappointed by seeing what was chosen instead of him. Now we don't know if Tai Lung rested at all on the way to the valley, but it seemed that he didn't, and at the end of the fight when he took the scroll and found out that what he was looking for was not written on some paper as he was led to believe, his tiredness finally caught up with him, and Po used his fat to win literally, and used this crazy move which he did not deserve, what's worse, there is no explanation or hint as to why he would know how to do this, he just realized how the move works (That's what I dislike most about the movie of all things). So Po kills this tortured warrior in the end, and if you ask me, Tai Lung did not deserve such treatment, and I believe he could of gone in a better direction if anyone cared, and gave him an actual chance, but NO everything revolves around Po.
@sithlordkaeyl21

Ummm…..No. Yes, Tai Lung was boosted by Shifu for years, and he was refused his “rightful place” as The Dragon Warrior, but his overreaction was a choice. The movie clearly stated that Oogway sensed that Tai Lung wasn’t worthy of the honor and responsibility of being The Dragon Warrior. Which, he was quickly proven right by all of Tai Lung’s actions. Adding parts to the story, in order to “prove” your point doesn’t really make them true. Saying that others in the village made fun of Tai Lung because he didn’t achieve his dream isn’t really something that we know happened, so it’s just speculation. And, how do you know that he was “rejected without any evidence”? Seems like another example of speculation. Also, Oogway had the knowledge and power to be able to find The Dragon Warrior, which is how he knew that it wasn’t one of The Furious Five, and could feel Tai Lung’s unworthiness. Also, you don’t know that “his tiredness finally caught up with him”, because we don’t know how much time passes between Tai Lung leaving prison until he finally gets to Shifu, but a significant amount of time had to have passed since Shifu was able to teach Po some Kung Fu. And, no matter what Tai Lung’s opinions of Po are, or whether he feels Po “deserves” to be The Dragon Warrior, that’s not justification for his actions. This is just like when people say that Syndrome was a victim in ‘The Incredibles’ when Mr. Incredible refused to let a child be his sidekick, and simply refused to hear the word, “no”, because he felt that he DESERVED to be a hero and didn’t want to hear anything that contradicted that, just like Tai Lung was becoming obsessed with the idea of him as The Dragon Warrior, instead of wanting to be a good being. They both clearly had serious issues with rejection, and they took those issues out on innocent people by choosing a path of violence, destruction, and causing harm.
@PetarSon
@PetarSon 7 ай бұрын
@@sithlordkaeyl21 I see your point but you lost me with your example, and you didn't seem to understand what i was trying to say. Tai Lung was raised with love but also with promises that he would be selected for sure, which Shifu was not allowed to put into his head and break him in training to achieve something that was not guaranteed, but Shifu put it into Tai Lung's head that if he is the best he will be chosen, and he became the best but he was rejected. My scenario with the villagers was a possible scenario that could be why he did it, for his attack on the village, because he didn't kill anyone, but just made a mess, maybe destroying a few houses, and beating up some villagers. I am Digressing, what I was trying to prove is that devoting your entire life to something, with unrealistic promises from your parent, and then being locked up for most of your life, can't even begin to compare to a brat who couldn’t handle rejection when he was little Shifu trained Tigress properly as a master with discipline, and not with love, that's why Tigress could accept her rejection, even though it can be seen in the movie that she was furious that someone who has nothing to do with Kung Fu took away her title. Putting it into someone's head that they are “The Chosen One”, and are destined to achieve a legendary thing that everyone would like to achieve, is not good for building one's character from childhood. love and promises, if broken, create hatred in the heart, but discipline is cold and fair, and the one who grew up with the coldness of discipline can bear rejection more easily.
@sithlordkaeyl21
@sithlordkaeyl21 7 ай бұрын
@@PetarSon, I understood what you were saying, and you were right about the fact that Tai Lung was raised with love and positive reinforcement and showed a lot of promise, but he eventually let his “destiny” go to his head, which is when Oogway saw Tai Lung’s path, so he knew that Tai Lung didn’t have the right mindset to be The Dragon Warrior. And yes, Shifu does hold a good amount of responsibility for filling Tai Lung’s head with his ideas of “greatness” which wasn’t the best thing for him , because he believed in his own future too much. But, it ultimately falls on the shoulders of Tai Lung for his actions, which he chose to take out the “rejection” on innocent beings by nearly destroying the entire Valley of Peace. That was a serious overreaction from someone that had incredible delusions of grandeur. He may have had a chance to actually becoming The Dragon Warrior at one point, but he allowed himself to start believing his own hype, and that’s when he started to become unworthy of the title. If Shifu hadn’t been blinded by his love for Tai Lung, maybe Shifu could’ve done something to help him change his path, but Tai Lung made his choice, and it fell to Oogway to save everyone because Shifu was still unable to face his “failure”. Tai Lung is ultimately responsible for his actions, and wasn’t the innocent victim in the story. Also, Po was just doing what was necessary to protect The Valley from suffering Tai Lung’s wrath like the last time he ran amok. He even tried to explain the meaning behind The Dragon Scroll, but Tai Lung didn’t want to listen to Po, or admit that he didn’t know as much as Po because he was just a “big, fat panda”. So, I did understand what you meant, and I agree with you to a certain extent, but ultimately Tai Lung was the one that made himself unworthy to be The Dragon Warrior by falling in love with the idea of the title. It was his DESTINY, his RIGHT, and again, Shifu was 100% wrong for constantly telling Tai Lung that he would achieve the title if he only trained enough, but Oogway saw that the DRIVE Tai Lung was exhibiting was the wrong mindset to have, which was his own fault.
@PetarSon
@PetarSon 7 ай бұрын
@@sithlordkaeyl21 Tai Lung is responsible for his actions, I didn't say he was forgiven for what he did, but as far as Tai Lung knows he was sentenced to life in prison, even though he did not kill anyone, and he didn’t destroy the valley of peace, and Shifu would never have tried to apologize or just visit him and maybe change him, Tai Lung is arrogant and full of pride, but he was never discouraged to carry himself any differently because Shifu was blinded by parental love, instead of being a master in training and teaching Tai Lung things other than just martial arts. Tai Lung maybe wasn't never meant to be a Dragon Warrior, but he wasn't a monster with no self control, no one is born that way but he was shaped that way, because the one who was raised with false promises and beliefs, that training everything and learning everything will lead him to these incredible heights, that are from legends only told, you feel betrayed because the goal you were chasing was never yours even though it was promised to you, by a person who should have never guaranteed something like that, everyone would be furious, especially the one’s whose training went to the very limits of the body to the point of breaking bones, so much pain it's not easy to leave behind. Po didn't have anything like that put into his head, but grew up normally with his dreams of becoming anything he wanted to be, especially when he saw Tigress’s fight when he was young. Po did not realize the secret of the scroll by himself, but his father helped him, and Po is the person he is because of his environment and how his father raised him, not only because of what Po is like on the inside. Po did not try to change or hellp Tai Lung, he just said a few words expecting someone who was exhausted and angry to just listen and try to understand "there is no secret ingredient, it's just you", and If you watch the movie you can see when the five are talking to Po about Tai Lung, and Po understood his story, so he could have talked to him, and try to calm him down while he was holding him in that stupid grip, since Tai Lung was barely moving after that fall, he could barely stand on his feet, and Po could talk to him like he tried with Shen in the second movie. This is how I look at that event, when Tai Lung saw what was in the scroll and found nothing he thought he would find, he began to act impulsively and made mistakes, so while Po was holding him with that stupid grip he could better explain what the scroll meant, because Po convinced him that he held him in that grip, Tai Lung was calm and could try to listen to his opponent, and for Po to give him a choice, since he would told Tai Lung the whole truth, and whether he would choose peace, or for Po to do what he did in the movie. I think that since Tai Lung has nothing more to chase, and fight for, maybe he would take this chance to go and train on himself, to find himself when he doesn't have the scroll that had a false promise in his head blinding him, and maybe somewhere in the future he could reconcile with Shifu and not be seen as a threat anymore. I want to say that there is still a lot they could have done with Tai Lung if they wanted to, because Tai Lung deserves redemption because he has the potential for it, because he is not pure evil like some think. I did repeat myself a bit in this rewrite of mine, because I wanted to say everything else that I didn't mention. If you read everything thank you, and you don't have to completely agree with me, I just wanted to say everything I have on this topic.

@@PetarSon, no worries. I did read it, and I can see what you’re saying and why you believe the way you do. Like I said before, I do agree with you on several things, but I think where we differ is just who is to “blame” for Tai Lung’s decisions and actions, which is fine. I also agree that Tai Lung isn’t an “evil”character with no redeeming value, and he certainly could have gotten help and changed, but he also could have stayed the same. Do I think that he deserved to die for his actions? No, but a lot of movies do that sort of thing to the “villain”, which I think is a waste of character for future films.

Kung Fu Panda trilogy is not just perfect. It also looks complete, with the story making its full circle at the end of the 3rd movie. Therefore I have my doubts about the 4th parts. I will be glad to be wrong about it though.

This and how to train your dragon are two of the best trilogies of all time, animated or live action. For me personally, I think Shen in 2 is the best villain and I love Kai from 3, but there’s something so personal about Tai lung that makes me understand his quarrel and see the sadness through his anger. I don’t think his actions are justified but you can see where they come from

A couple fun things about this movie I learned after moving to china: Master (let’s just say kung-fu master for the sake of this) in chinese is shifu 师傅. So Master Shifu is Master Master. His name is his title. The word for turtle is wugui乌龟. So Master Oogway is just Master Turtle. thought these were fun elements to add

What makes Kung Fu Panda Trilogy so great are the villains, who are well written, not being bad cause they just are bad, every villain had his aim, Tai Lung for example wanted to be dragon warrior just to make Shifu proud. In the KFP 2 they focused on Po's past, its very emotional and the final fight was just EPIC, that's why it's my favourite movie of this three.

I love this movie, it has so many great messages, the artwork is extremely well done, and since it is a kids movie it does have a lot of that crude humor but that is balanced really well by the seriousness. Solid 10 out of 10. The sequel is even better and deeper.

Such a great movie. One of my favorite parts was always how Shifu forced himself to believe in Po. He did not necessarily believe in him yet but he forced himself to because of his own sensei which lead to one of the best lines and responses in the movie: Po: Just what are you asking of me? Shifu: "I am asking you to have faith in your master, as I have faith in mine!"

Awesome that you guys started this series. It's a favourite of mine. There's actually 4 short films that, if you want, you can watch in between these movies. "Furious Five" and "Holiday" between movies 1 and 2, and "Masters" and "Scrolls" between movies 2 and 3. p.s. Matt would've had a field day with this series as they are Bygone Jim moment goldmines.

That’s settled, after King Foo Panda, start with dogs animated movies. A lot come to mind, Bolt (2008), Oliver & Company (1988)… but I think you know what I’m going to say and where to start, All Dogs Go To Heaven (1989) it’s a must see animated film about dogs. A film that probably didn’t age well, which could be interesting commentary.
