“Meeting people half way” is how relationships work. It’s not about what we give up, but what we give. How we do that to make an impact is our responsibility. Part of that is doing it from our sense of values. Form (the packaging) is secondary to (function) the intent and delivery and what we make people feel. As creators we obsess over the form sometimes to the detriment of the function/purpose/outcome. Being strategic is not the same thing as being disingenuous... you can be strategic and sincere... Hope that made sense ...

You’re incredibly spot on with this video and you are definitely on my frequency! I began my channel with about 43 subscribers and 10 months in I’ve grown past the 10,000 subscribers mark BUT... the numbers just kind of took a backseat ever since then and I just grew this amazing passion to create and continue innovating no matter who catches on and WHEN they catch on.. because if you don’t give up, you will be rewarded!

Eric! Your mindset is gold. It's very easy to get sucked into the analytics and start spiraling when you don't get views or your channel doesn't grow, so the fact that you're still here, doing this and loving this, that's amazing. I think my favourite part is meeting new people and building new friendships with people from all over the world! Also, I think the trick is to balance making sacrifices with doing what you love and staying true to your passion/person. If you want to help people or grow you will have to make sacrifices so that you'll have this format that'll help you grow, but you have to be careful so you don't lose all of yourself in the process. I think the artists + you put it very very well! Great video!

On the flip side, if you are creating consistently and have been doing it for a long time, I don't think we give ourselves enough credit! I feel you man! Already struggling as you in “niching down” my content, bc want to create some different topics on one channel, like self-awareness, some stories from my travels, inspiration things, tutorials (but not fancy), some valuable films as well, bc passionate about it. And yeah, while I was thinking about it I actually stopped making videos, maybe because I needed to clear my vision about it. This video truly shows that I’m in a right path, thank you man for that! As you said you wanna help people, so you already have helped me :)
@EricWen5 жыл бұрын
You're asking the tough questions even when it's uncomfortable. That made a huge difference to me - so i think you're on the right path! I found it helpful to not focus as much on "niching down" but more - figuring out who I want to reach, how I want to reach them, and figuring out the through line in my content based on who I am. For me, I'm pretty thoughtful and analytical and really love communication and making others think. So I wanted to lean into that a bit more than just "personal development" or "tutorials" and package it in a way where those things would stand out obviously. I found it freeing to think about myself as a person and how I could unleash the cool things about me in a way that could quickly make sense to others, instead of trying to find a small box that I'd be able to stomach limiting myself to. Idk if that makes sense. It's really tricky trying to find your way to stand out while also doing what you love. It took time for me and i'm sure it's just going to keep evolving! Best of luck to you man!!
@BairAyushov5 жыл бұрын
Eric Wen I was thinking about it too! I mean, who I want to reach, in the beginning I didn’t know, but now I have understood it. And yeah, I was thinking about “how I want to share it” in which kind way. Sorry if I wasn’t clear, it’s all about translation problems (for me) haha. Keep learning English as you Spanish)). Hi Eric, I just discovered you through Matt. I hope more and more people discover your channel soon, you have an awesome foundation and great ideas. I wanted to say- your statement about KZbin exposing a new you, and not regretting the time you spent here because that is the greatest gift... that made me want to tear up. As a pretty strong introvert, I have to feel thankful for how much youtube has opened me up to the world and taught me how to interact with it. It’s one of those things you don’t notice until you stop and look back at old videos from 2011... remember how difficult it was to talk to strangers, to appear on camera, to improv, before all of this. And although we no longer speak now, I am forever thankful for the long distance friends I made through KZbin when I was in college, back when my channel had a different focus. I hope they remember me fondly in some way as well. All that personal ranting aside, thank you for your insightful words, best wishes to you and your channel! You have a new subscriber in me. :-)

SBK Dad here. Loved the second half of your video. You are right on. I think that KZbin tries to figure out who you are (and your general topic) and then serves that audience (your “tribe” if you will). When another audience (surprise to KZbin), starts viewing your content, KZbin “discovers” that it might have your “tribe” wrong, and starts to expose your vids to more people, in order to, again, identify your tribe. While YT is discovering this, you’ll get more views as they try to figure it out. Once they do, views settle down again. The friends we meet in this platform are very different. We’ve found that by collaborating with these “different” people (with different tribes) we keep KZbin guessing, and our vids get exposed more broadly for a while. I know this is contrary to the “stay in your niche” theory, but the key to growth is to find “non-subscribers”, a new “tribe” made of people that you can’t really identify, but that resonates with “you” as a creator, *your* expanding tribe of viewers. We love you and your content. Hope more people find and enjoy you like we have! ♥️

This is very interesting, I love tuning in from time to time to hear what you have to say. I think maybe KZbin has a testing phase, because I thought I was alone in the fact that my channel used to do better, but has slightly declined. But I’ve talked with many others and they say the same. Maybe this phase is to rid out and eliminate those who do it for the numbers as you said. All I know is that we need to keep creating, and we need to love creating 💪
@EricWen5 жыл бұрын
I think these declines are because of what I talked about in my last video - especially evident over long periods of time, people get busy and have to prioritize other things! Only the people who love it will really be able to persist, yes! And more controversial, only the people who really innovate and work hard to stand out/package themselves correctly will grow long term! I know you really love it dude! I've seen your stuff. So true, Tom. Man that speech was inspirational. One of the most inspirational I've heard! Interesting, the idea of creators deserving to get paid and how they shouldn't feel dirty about it...is slightly related to this idea in this video of creators shouldn't feel guilty about thinking about numbers or wanting to grow, especially if they're doing it for the right reasons.

Great video Eric, and some interesting observations. I have no doubt that, almost ironically, this video alone will increase your exposure to a new audience. As someone in the very early days of my KZbin experience, I appreciate watching and learning from those further down the road. To find out about the good, the bad, the different and unexpected steps and stories that may happen as part of the journey are incredibly valuable - and not always shared in such a helpful way.

There is a LOT of irony in this video blowing up. Hopefully it doesn't dilute or distract from the message too much. If i watched this video when I first started, I wouldn't have understood or agreed with the second half of this video. Which is really interesting for me. From your comment it seems like you got and understood a lot that the others watching this video didn't hear. That is awesome dude. I'm glad it was valuable and expressed well for you! Curious what watching this video would be like for you a year from now. Thanks for your thoughtful comment UnlikelyVlogger!

Hi Eric, I just stumbled upon your channel and I love your view on the WHY of making KZbin videos. It's so easy to get caught up in the whole numbers game and seeing it as the main objective, that you quickly lose sight of the real value you are able to get out of it. Thanks!

The WHY is the most important part!! :) . I'm so glad this video resonated with you. Creating isn't clear cut, black, white, good and bad - even the tactics. It's much more about how you choose to see it, and what you choose to build for yourself that brings you success and happiness...

Just wanted to send a virtual high-five for this vid! I found your channel back when you first collabed with Cody and I check in on ya from time to time in between making my own content. I've always enjoyed hearing your perspective and thoughts on communication and awareness/mindset--something I put a lot of thought into but aren't the focus of my channel--and am glad to see you connect the dots on making it easier for people find and engage with your content. Yes, at first it can appear like "playing algorithm games" but ultimately the intent behind it is everything. You've already done several excellent collabs and developed a great network on the platform, I think you can leverage your past and future videos with different titles/thumbnails etc to get a lot more discoverability :)

Thanks so much Gina Yeah it was a nice reality check this summer to realize "wait, I can package myself differently to reach more and grow while also still being me" That was very shocking to me and it was hard to set in for a while. You are like me! We always want to be authentic and anything close to selling out or being fake sounds gross. It took a while to brainstorm and reflect on content that was a good fit.
