Go Here to Download Your Book - www.myboxingco... - In this video we work through 2 types of boxing defence to deal with 3 types of opponent. One of these boxing defences is a body movement, and one is a boxing footwork skill.
The two boxing skills that we use are the Lay Back and the Push Out (sometimes called the pendulum step).
The lay back is a boxing sill that involves being at long range and bending the back leg to take to take your head out of range. After execution you return to the start point and let your punches go.
It's important to keep the guard high. It's important to try to avoid bending at the waist - we want to remain fighter effective throughout the skill. Here's a proactive strike drill that demonstrates the skill, a skill that was used extensively by Floyd Mayweather Jr - • Proactive Strike Boxin...
The second boxing skill is the push out or pendulum step. This is a boxing footwork skill that involves using sharp movement to push out of (long) range to the edge of range to then push back to long range to deliver your punches.
The push out is a 'balls of your feet' drill, you'll never get it right with flat feet. Also, ensure that the line from the toe of your front foot to the heel of your back foot remains throughout the execution phase.
Oleksandr Usyk is a great exponent of the push out, you can find a breakdown of his style here - • The Oleksandr Usyk Box...
The lay back works well against defensive counter punchers, it's an assertive skill that enables you to keep pressure on the opponent.
The push out works well against static boxers or boxers that rely on a more square stance and power punching.
So there we have it, two cool boxing defences to use against different types of opponent.
Cheers
Fran

I used to call the lay back swaying. It was effective at giving a false sense of distance in relation to defense and offense because you could do it swaying back and you could do it going foward a little at an angle if you were at the right distance, foot to foot from the opponent.

I've been successful at quick lateral movements, more than back and forth; Probably because I'm more accustomed to them. But I'm gonna' work more on the 'back and forth' technique.

I would really like to incorporate that layback into my style but my trainer taught me to point the feet and hips towards the opponent and angling the back leg can damage your knee. He himself had a knee surgery because he used to stay like this. When i try standing like this i instantly feel too much pressure on my knee joint. Is that maybe something that can be done up to Lightweight? Bc me and my trainer are Cruiser/Heavyweight and then there is too much pressure on the joint?

By the way, do we need to train our jaw and neck muscle. I heard many saying about iron jaw and thick neck. Is that really helpful?

It is funny how coaches say do not do this and that, but tell you to do that later on, or others saying "this style is right, the only way" but then have their pupils get destroyed by it. I had enough coaches tell me what is wrong and right until I just did what worked for me along, realizing most of these people do not understand individual strength. Following the basics and finding the right coach that understands the individual is the right way, and screw these coaches that tell you like religion how it can only be the same style, with pride they say it when they do not have a clue fundamentally. Today I am 12 and 0, but when i first started under those coaches all the damage I took until mid fight I decided to do it the ways that worked rather then what my coach religiously thought was right. I feel bad for those who cannot do it mid fight and dig in and just end up damaged for life while the coach figures it out and blames the fighter. I like this guy but at the same time as I actually fight now taking damage and giving it I am realizing why each coach is different and I for sure will teach differently, with a different attitude with out the cocky grin. Thank you for the tips. I would like to see this guy show us his fighters, their clips,, how he has shaped them, not on all these styles from pros we will never meet in our lives.

I like using both but have a bias towards pendalum stepping its been second nature for years but since im small i tend to get bigger sparring partners or opponents who attempt to fight the way you stated and i get out n in and land combos n retreat, but i will need to learn to guage wjat kind of fighter im facing and use the technique accordingly or mixing both.
