The first minute and seven seconds broke me. As a son and now a father the lyrics hit me deeply. “One day, I’ll leave you, a phantom, in summer, to lead you in the black parade”. The weight of realizing that one day you will be gone from your child’s life and that the only thing left for them is everything you ever said, did and taught to them and it genuinely hurts to think of the day I won’t be able to help my children anymore. The curse of a father is like that of teaching them to ride a bike without training wheels. You can only be there for that first push but eventually you let go and they continue forward using your essence to carry them onward while you remain behind. It’s a terrifying thought that you have to one day let them go on their own and it makes me want to hug my children all that much tighter knowing this inevitable moment comes one day sooner or later. But it also inspires me to want to be the best father I can be so that when I leave them, they can carry on. I truly love this song. Bitter sweet and heartfelt it’s one of those rare songs where you can tell the writer put his heart and soul into it.
