In this video, I go over common bacterial contaminations in mushroom cultivation. This is to help people see if they have any potential contaminants in their spawn. I primarily go over wet rot and hidden contaminations, plus how to go about fruiting/salvaging such spawn.

Hey sage quick question I’ve recently had a problem where my jars colonize everywhere except the tops of the grain they just reach out there and seem to stall any idea on why this might be? And is there anything I can do to prevent it from happening again thank you very much very grateful and thankful for your videos 🤝💙

The jar that won't break-up is really good info! If your mycelium doesn't break up easily then you're going to have problems. Took me a while to figure that one out.

Ah man, My first grow I did 10 jars and I didn’t get one that was completely clean. I was able to salvage enough to do one tub of gt And it worked. Got a bunch of really small ones the first flush, I was so happy it worked. It was mss straight to grain and I wasn’t very good at hydrating the popcorn at all. Plus I don’t think I did even a full 90 mins.

Duuuude!!! Just struck GOLD finding this video!!! Been struggling with bacterial riders for a whiiiile now. Basically have narrowed it down to my LFH filter been saturated, and every "open jar" agar/grain transfer I do in front of it gets bacteria that I later transfer to tubs and get Trich. Really frustrating cuz the myc looks "OK" but at the end of the cycle, all that effort and resources are lost. But, looking at your video I've learned that they may ALSO be embedded bacteria coming in the genetics purchased. 🤔 Cheers man! Keep doing these videos! One about possible origins of such contams/bacteria would be nice!!!

Thanks for this content, its hard to find information on hidden contamination, but it's quite common for me! One idea I wanna share with you @Mycophilia: I remember Mycoplasma are smaller then other bacteria and prefer to stay intracellular, not intercellular. Maybe they are your hidden embedded contamination. Did you try growing this kind of contaminated mycelium on Agar-water? all the best!

Trich kinda takes over in growth quickly, if it's spotting light green it's penicillium, trich spreads much faster and has a forest green color when matured, penicillium takes longer so you can let it go a little longer before you have to toss it out, gives you chance to get some fruits out if you're at that point that is. Love the vids brotha!!! Keep fighting the good fight!!! 🦍🙏💪🏿

Why one would bother with PF tek anymore is beyond me. But each to there own. First I had to pressure cook the jars, drill holes then squirt 2ml of liquid spawn into each jar. I did 4 jars, lost two cakes to bacteria, then put the other two in a tub with perlite on foil. (It took a month to colonise the jars btw). One cake produced a few fruits then that was it. I’ll never do it again.

Then I redid the process trying to be even more careful with another LC syringe (GT) I got in a pack. Was as sterile as i could be with alcohol, etc but on rye and oven baked at 80 deg C for about 2.5 hrs since i dont have a PC yet. Made sure to squirt down side to monitor, after 3 days I can see white either whispy or early signs of white fuzz. Should i leave it and monitor or perhaps toss it while its pretty early? I regularly get very strange mycelial growth with certain varieties that looks very much like @6:06. But very rarely have contamination until the third flush when the bulk sub is ready to be tossed. Its quite possible in my opinion that you have poor genetics leading to zero fruits, and eventual contamination after months trying to fruit. I think an important thing to mention is rhizomorphic mycelium, and tomentose mycelium and a combination of the two. Some of those jars look more like tomentose growth in combination with bad genetics. But in any case do what works for you and I hope you can get some new genetics from that variety and create a stable performer.

Thanks. I came here with BRF jars that look just like that. Very fluffy and cloudlike. Other places online have suggested they mycelium has pulled away from the jar, leaving a low-oxygen area, and that this is the same fuzziness that can occur at the base of mushrooms in monotubs.

Shaking is good, shaking doesn’t cause contams, it just shows you that contams were apparent in the first place if they do not recover after a shake. Shaking basically saves you time in two ways: 1) it lets you know if you have contam earlier on if it doesn’t recover from a shake 2) it spreads mycelium everywhere so it speeds up the process itself if the mycelium is healthy

Question, were those white jars of the compressed myc started from what looked like a singular culture on an agar plate from spores? I think people get germinating spores mixed up at times. Spores can germinate and grow by themselves. They only need to meet up later with other germinated spores to go on and grow healthy mycelium and eventually fruit. This may be the problem with that myc. I'd try introducing another sample of myc that came from the same strain and see of they marry 🤷

Every jar I've ever tried to spawn has turned into those thick bacterial contam but fully colonized / smells fine jars. I've been thinking it's the WBS I've been using and/or the holes in my modified lids aren't large enough.

Very interesting, but what makes you think the jars with the white mycelium are contaminated with bacteria, or even contaminated at all? Have you done some tests that support that notion? Might not something else actually be going on? (BTW, next time why don't you slice the white mycelial mass into 1.5-2 cm 'breadslices' with a knife and try putting them btw a thin 50-50 CC-Verm bottom and thicker 50-50 CC-verm top layer and see what happens. I suspect breaking up spawn that looks like that might not work very well.)

They are 💯 contaminated, once you’ve grown for some time you know what’s contaminated and what’s not. I have listed a number of reasons on this video, the primary ones being the extremely thick growth that makes it impossible to break up, along with all previous attempts with this culture always ending up with the same green mold, at least those that have been spawned to bulk. The ones that have not (bottle fruited), have not fruited in 2+ months of fruiting conditions, in addition to growing very strange mycelium masses after the first month, a hallmark of contamination. As for your idea of slicing, a better method exists called jar/top fruiting. It is better because you don’t need to break up the mycelium at all. Hope that helps.

If your bulk is going bad then you have 1) Not fully sterilized (longer higher temps required) Why does this happen???? Elevation has an effect on temp. 2) You introduced a contaminant (Lysol/alcohol and draft hood) 3) Your inoculate is contaminated (do a better job on sterilizing and use smaller wide mouth jars)

Hey! I think I'm dealing with the same bacteria as you. I've also done multiple transfers to both agar and grain and still am seeing those big fluffy clumps on top. Do you know if it's definitely bacterial, or could it be a mold or yeast? If it's bacterial then perhaps a transfer to antibiotic agar could clean it up?
@Mycophilia
@Mycophilia Жыл бұрын
Definitely worth a try. I would recommend doing at 2-3 xfers on antibiotic agar, and then 2 xfers on regular agar to make sure it won’t come back. This is because bacteria will always eventually outsmart the antibiotics eventually

I'm on my first attempt, and at first, the mycelium was growing beautifully, but today, I noticed a spot of localised green mould near the top of the jar. What would be your advice? It hasn't spread yet, and it would be easy enough to scoop it out with a sterilised spoon and discard, but I'm worried that the whole lot might need to be thrown out.

It should, I would recommend doing 2-3 xfers on antibiotic bacteria, then 2 transfers on normal agar to make sure it doesn’t come back (as bacteria will always overcome the antibiotics eventually, so you need to make sure they’re gone for sure before putting it to grain)

In regards to the bacterial spawn, my grow bag has looked like that since inoculation. I was informed it was “tomentose mycelium”. I started doing this chasing mycelium into fruit about a year ago and I use the uncle Ben’s method but the last six syringes I received all turned into super green nasty. My guess is that it’s Trichoderma has a very foul smell to it. my first I’d say eight times was very successful. I have not changed my procedures if anything I have gotten even more excessive compulsive about cleanliness. I am guessing that I am getting contaminated syringes. I intend to try to perpetually multiply a "ready to fruit" lions mane kit, grown on fuel pellets supplemented with wheat bran. If I quadruple the kit, (3 bags for fruiting, 1 to inoculate the next generation), how many generations can I reasonably expect to produce before I hit a wall of contamination and have to start over? Could I reduce the risk of contamination by skipping the supplementation? On one hand, I imagine the mycelium may not spread as quickly, on the other I imagine the wheat bran may be inviting organisms that would otherwise not infect hardwood. What do you think?
