hey! i really love all of your freya videos and they’ve been a big help at preparing me for my little guy. i just recently got an aussie pup and he’s super fun but definitely a handful. i was wondering if you could do a video on like, leash training? or just more specifically how you stopped her from chewing on the leash. we want to get our little guy used to leashes before he goes on actual walks, but all he really does is chew on it while walking. how did you stop freya from the chewing?

This video is so freaking helpful. I have a four month old chocolate lab puppy and she is not doing well with training. She is mostly potty trained, but sleeping through the night, barking in her crate, tricks, she is not doing well. So im trying to change that. Your videos are amazing. I love them so much. I set up an area like Freya's last night, and im starting training in a few minutes after I watch some vids. I did use the crate as a punishment, which I regret, but I do want to change that. Crate training with our first puppy is already going way easier than with our new Aussie puppy. With that said, he has improved SO MUCH from the first week but I definitely wasn’t able to focus on any training week 1 as much as I wanted. My boyfriend’s stepdad died from Covid, so he had to fly out of state to go to the funeral and he was gone for a week. That left me in a new house to unpack with our already 3 pre-existing animals, with a new puppy and starting classes back. The absolute worst week of my life 😩🥴

Insert crib instead of crate and you have literally described how to care for a human baby! ❤ which makes total sense because a puppy is a baby…you have to “parent” them. Sleep train and help them learn good behaviors…it’s very similar! Thanks for sharing! it depends!! if we were gone for 1-2 hours she would have the crate AND playpen set up, but if we were gone for longer periods of time, we would just use the crate!

I know this is an older video but I just wanted to ask a question. So at my apartment we have to kennel when we aren’t home and my husband and I both work so I’m wondering how I can do this while also having to leave him in the kennel when we are gone. He’s 6 months old and we’ve been working on this for a week and a half but it’s going so slow and I feel so bad for my neighbors. 😭 My biggest question is am I doing more harm than good by doing these tips but also having to leave him in there when I’m gone?

It wouldn't be more harm than good. any "help" and training is good, always! It just might take longer since the "consistency" is a little off. But that's okay! I would just focus on positive associations when you ARE home. so play around it and have fun around it, feed meals and treats in it, etc. so they're not ONLY spending time in there when you're gone. I hope it gets better soon!

My question is, I don't understand do people crate training do you never leave the house? There is stuff I have to do and I don't have weeks to stay hunkered in my house. Now she hates going g in there because I've had to put her in there for her to be safe.

It depends. For myself, I work from home so I am able to crate train and take the time to do it in a way where I'm positively associating it before having to leave her in there for a long time. If I pick up my puppy and then the next day (or 5 in a row) they automatically get shoved into a crate by themselves, it's not a good experience for them (rightfully so) but also, you gotta do what you gotta do! But different people have different situations and can do things a bit different.

what helped with that was teaching her "leave it" and then we implemented that on our walks because YES everything she would see/find on the sidewalks would end up in her mouth and she would try and eat it lol. she did it for a while but now we can walk past MOST things without her picking it up but if she does pick it up she's quick to drop it if we ask her to leave it now :)

It depended on how old she was and what stage she was out. I only let her stay in the play pen once she could be trusted in that area without chewing or accidents. so we worked up to that!

I did not. I found that starting with the crate wherever you want it to end up makes the process go a bit faster than with them getting used to it in the bedroom next to you and then one day they're out in the living room away from you. But folks do both! There's no "wrong" answer!

@@BaldGod yes! Kinda the same thought process: whatever you're wanting to be the "end goal" or longterm thing, start with that on day 1. So the first night after bringing her home she slept in her crate in the living room. I still got her out every 2 hours to potty train through the night but she stayed in there all night from day 1 and the first 2-3 nights are so sad and awful with crying etc. but if I would have "gave in" and moved the crate or let her out or slept with her instead she wouldn't get the idea that this is how it's going to be. So we did what we wanted to do from the start so she could get used to it quicker.

A great tip I found when crate training ..........take your pup outside for his/ her last pee about 12 at night.........then get up at sunrise and do the same......I have had a Rottweiller and an English Springer Spaniel and by doing this I had three wee accidents and NO poops......exhausting but a few weeks of pain to get years of gain is worth it

I just got a border collie puppy 2 days ago and I let him sleep on my bed but tonight I have him in the crate and he's been screaming, barking, howling ect it breaks my heart but I know he will build a good relationship with the crate in the long run. I'm currently ignoring him right now and it's 1:56am. I live in a flat and and I've went to my neighbours with chocolate out of respect for their sleep just if they get woken up, strong feeling they have been woken up. he's had some breaks of crying but whenever a car passes that's loud I think it's waking him up and he's realising he's still in the cage. I have a hard Kong bone that I put under water and froze to cool him and chew on cause i know it's not something that can be ripped apart. I hope he catches on quickly cause it does break my heart

It's definitely heartbreaking but it'll stick and they'll learn quicker if it's consistent and they're left to calm themselves! once you take them out ONCE when they cry, then they'll forever cry ~just in case~ you'll take them out again. It gets better, but it takes time!! 💜

I got my 8 week boxer pup last week and the first two nights were HARD. The third/fourth night he didn’t make a sound and slept with no issues. Fifth/sixth night he only cried for about 10 min after coming back from the first potty break. Last night(7th night) was just as bad as the first... I thought we were making progress but felt so defeated when he wouldn’t stop barking. Like babies I guess there will be good nights and some bad 🤷🏽‍♀️ I’m not sure what I did wrong but hopefully tonight is better. Will definitely be using some of these tips!

I have 6-month-old Aussie and the crate is the best thing for her! Even today, she accepts it and sleeps through 6 hours without any accidents. I would like to see what you do with barking and biting though.

Here's what we did with Freya on the biting: whenever she would bite/nip us we would use our correction word, which is “ah-ah-ah” and if she stopped biting, even for a second, we would praise and give treats and continue play with her. If she didn't stop biting then we would offer her a toy to redirect her behavior to and if she took the toy instead of continuing to bite us, we would praise and give treats and continue to play. Sometimes (of course) she wouldn't stop biting even for a toy, and in that case we would stand up and physically remove ourselves from her. We would go behind our baby gate and turn our back to her and ignore her until she calmed down, laid down, or started playing with a toy on her own and when she did we one of those things we would praise and give treats and come back to play. It definitely was A LOT of standing up and leaving, sitting down, then standing right back up in the beginning (it’s exhausting and annoying). But you gotta be consistent and do it EVERY TIME for them to learn quicker! Don't do it sometimes and not others, or they’ll get confused on ~when~ it’s okay to bite, when it should be NEVER okay to bite. It definitely still took some time for her to learn this (it probably wasn't until 4 months old that she totally stopped) but it would DRASTICALLY decrease the amount of times she would bite us AND decrease the amount of time it took for us to get her to stop biting us when she did. It's also recognizing that biting is how dogs explore the world and with teething being painful, all they want to do is chomp lmao. So giving them toys of different textures, hardness, taste, size, etc. to spend time chewing is important! So definitely give your dog things they CAN chew and LOVE chewing. This is just how we taught her what she can and can’t chew on. I hope that's helpful!!! In the end, it honestly just takes time. It won't stop in a week, or probably even two. Once they lose their baby teeth those behaviors usually fall off, but being consistent will help this process go quicker! GOOD LUCK!

as long as the puppy won't chew the bed, then the bed can go in the crate!! we started with nothing in there so there wouldn't be any distractions, chewing/choking hazards at 8 weeks old!

Why dont you let your dog be free on the flat. Must be boring as hell for the dog to always be in a crate. Wouldn't be surprised if she would develop some sort of behaviour problems.

She’s rarely in the crate. Only at night now, or on Sundays if we leave to go somewhere she can’t go (our daycare place is closed on Sundays) otherwise we drop her off at doggy daycare to run & have fun while we’re away. Crate training is for safety. If you left an 8 week old puppy alone in your apartment for ANY amount of time, you would come home to a ruined apartment & potentially a very sick/dead dog who chewed through cords & wires, ate cleaners they shouldn’t have, chewed through couches & door frames, pooped & peed EVERYWHERE. this makes sure they can’t chew & ingest something that will block their intestines, or something poisonous to them, doesn’t chew up your carpet/furniture, etc. ($$$$ especially with renting & deposits), or of course go to the bathroom everywhere (again $$$$ with deposits & renting) :)

SOOO nippy omg!!! she was until she hit 4 months or so!! What really helped with hers was EXERCISE!!! once she started going to doggy daycare consistently the biting stopped! A tired dog is a good and happy dog!!! Biting is usually just pent up energy they don't know how to get rid of! So EXERCISE EXERCISE EXERCISE!!! Especially with high energy breeds!! If Freya is cooped up in the house for a few days and we don't get to go anywhere she gets nippy again because she has way too much energy! So she goes to Daycare every other day or so to help with that!! 💚

Some crates come with a crate divider that snaps into place, like mine. So she physically can't get to the other side - to avoid this from happening!

SUCH a good idea!! LOVE that we have this. it's fool proofing WHEN she needs to go and its a very clear indication rather than watching her 24/7 or guessing if shes sitting by the door or encouraging barking etc. the only con is when they're learning they'll ring it ALOT because at first they'll just associate the bells with going OUTSIDE not POTTY, but once they make that connection it's good lol.

We have the same crate cover for our girl, too! Have you had any issues with Freya getting too hot in there? I feel like every time I open it up to wake our pup up, there’s a waft of hot air and it makes me nervous!

aww I LOVE it!! I leave the little side window rolled up for her and I don't actually zip it closed on the door side. I just let it flop over to close it and I've never had any issues with her getting too hot that way! 🫶🏼

Been watching the puppy update video since the beginning! I recently adopted an icelandic sheep dog, what do you recommended for handing his barking behavior on leash? He's a sweet dog and understands other dogs body language at the dog park but when he is on leash he's a total jerk and like to bark at everything. Any suggestions?

ooohh that's a tough one. Freya likes to bark at things she's scared of on leash and we usually try and give her our correction word "ah-ah-ah" and if she stops we praise and give treats and if she doesn't then we either try to step in between her and the thing she's barking at so she will turn her attention onto us and if she does, praise and treat, or turn her around toward me with her back to the thing she's barking at and if she does praise and treat. what also helps is refocusing her attention, so asking her to do a command like lay down, center, spin, etc. will make her focused on something else, or even throwing treats onto the ground away from the thing she's barking at to redirect her attention. You can also use cue words like "check it out" for them to check out a thing and sniff it out but as soon as they stop say yes and praise and keep their attention away by walking away or any of the other things. so you are turning their fascination with people/dogs into a command. When you come to someone that you know she'll bark at, say "check it out" let them check out the person and then (especially if they do it without barking) already praise and reward that behavior and NOT the barking. Teaching them that it's okay to check out a thing they want to and sniff or stare at it, but only for a bit, and then go back to mom for treatos :) that's what I've seen/tried to do with that with Freya so far!! I hope thats helpful!!!

I was thinking about also buying the Fenrir dog training course that you talked about…and I was wondering if it was worth it. Was it insanely helpful with training? I LOOOVVEEEE Fenrir's Perfect Puppy course!!! If you're looking for guidance on YOURSELF more so for the dog. You can learn everything (training and trick related) on youtube for free, so if you want to purchase it to learn how to train your dog to sit, stay, etc. then I would say not needed. You can find all that info on KZbin. But for ME, I wanted it because it was more psychology based and more based on YOU as the trainer and companion of your dog and how YOU effect your training and your relationship with your dog. I have a degree in psychology so this really resonated with me and I REALLY enjoyed his techniques and thought processes on how to train your dog. he talked about how dogs learn, how their brain works in a way, and how we can use that to train better, but the best thing I took away from it was how to carry MYSELF around Freya and how to be a Calm Consistent Leader (that's his favorite thing to say lol) which I think made ALL the difference. Griffin didn't really watch the course and it shows with his relationship with Freya and how he interacts and how she listens to him, etc. vs. me. I hope that's helpful!! 💚

Thinking of getting a mini Aussie and keep hearing about the nipping and chewing inappropriately. Would love a video on that if you can. Plus, I keep being told they’re in need of hours a day of strenuous exercise, not just walking and playing outside, or they’re impossible to live with. Do I need to start looking for trails and learning to climb mountains? Lol. You are the most relaxed person I’ve watched who has an Aussie, and so is Freya. You give me hope.

they are definitely HARD to break on the nipping because theirs is puppy nipping and biting (which is normal) but they also have that instinctual herding nip/bite which is harder to work through. Not impossible!! It look from 8 weeks until 4 months for Freya to quit puppy biting/nipping and herding biting. She still gets in really hyper moods where she'll herd nip but it's soooo much easier for her to stop and settle when we correct it now vs when she was a puppy. But during the puppy stages it's ROUGH lol. I wore sweatpants, fuzzy socks, my hair up, long hoodies, etc. everyday because she would bite CONSTANTLY. It hurts hahahah lots of clothes with holes in them and her leash from when she was a puppy is definitely chewed hahaha. Griffin got the worst of it (lucky for me) but she would draw blood sometimes and the puppy teeth HURTTTTTT. but it is a phase and as long as you're consistent and start from Day 1 on no bitting, mouthing, ANYTHING it will go a lot smoother and quicker. but until they lose their baby teeth, they're kinda just a menace hahah 💚 As far as exercise I would agree that they need WAAAYYY more than just a 20 minute walk in the morning and a 20 minute walk at night. Every dog is different of course and honestly Freya is SOOO chill but we asked for that from the breeder and she did a wonderful job matching us with Freya, but I know coworkers of mine with Aussie's who NEVER STOP hahahah. so it's a hit and miss with the personality, but they definitely need TONS of exercise. we walk at least 30 minutes morning and night, and if she's home with us we go to the dog park for 1-2 hours every day or on a longer hike, etc. ORRR the even better thing is taking her to doggy daycare from like 9:00am-7:00pm where she can run and play ALL DAY and come home a tired and happy pup. That's our favorite way to tire her out and she LOVES it. I would definitely recommend doing daycare once their 4 months like every other day or so to help with the energy FOR SURE. Unless you're goin on longer runs with the dog, or they are actually on a farm herding etc. they will need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation!!! food puzzles, snuffle mats, etc. are used everyday with Freya and TRAINING TRAINING TRAINING!!! they NEED it. 💚 I hope that wasn't too much!! We aren't THAT active of people for an Aussie, honestly, but we make sure SHE gets it because that's what SHE needs. We don't care about the $$ that is spent on the food puzzles, puzzle games, daycare etc. as long as it fulfills her and makes her happy!!

@@MyDriftingDesk Thank you! You’re advice is very welcome. The more information I have, the easier the decision. I’ve gone through puppy teething 4 times now and aussies don’t sound too much worse. Whew! But I will buy some nice thick clothing. Lol Now I need to remember to make sure to talk with the breeder about exercise level. I expect zoomies! I can handle walks and even some hiking. But doggie daycare sounds like it’s the answer to “enough” exercise. Thank you again!

We’re getting our puppy in less than a week and we’re pretty much prepared but I’m struggling with one thing and that is where to put her crate . Long term she has her own room , where her food and toys and ideally her crate will be BUT not sure if I should crate train in her room OR have the crate in our bed room I’m at first? Everyone does it differently and would like to hear your opinion:)

My personal advice would be to start the process how you want to end the process. It's going to be rough at first, but it's easier to start the crate wherever you want it to end up in the end, rather than moving it every other day or so closer to your preferred spot. Both options work, but starting where you want to end will do it quicker!! I say put the crate exactly where you want it full time! That's what we did and yes the first 2-3 nights/days were horrible with crying but honestly Freya loved her crate/pen after like 1-2 weeks and we never moved it!!

I have a 10 week Aussie! Love your videos. I find it really hard to physically play with her because she ignores all my redirections and toys and bites me hard :( Any suggestions?

stay consistent and set your boundaries!!! Freya did the SAME thing. every time we played with her she was biting 24/7. It was exhausting but every time she would bite us we would say ah-ah-ah then give her a toy and if she took it praise and treats if she didn't and kept biting we would leave the area and go behind our baby gate and turn around and ignore her until she settled down and started playing with her toys then we would come back and try again. it was a lot of that until she was 4 months old, but it truly is a phase that gets better after they start losing their baby teeth!! I promise it gets better! But stay consistent and NEVER let her do it and she will catch on quicker!

Hi Marissa, quick Q on night routine, when you used to take Freya out during the night to potty did you also use the bells or did you just cary her out to potty?

We used the bells! Every time she went potty we would use the bells! When she was itty bitty we would carry her to the bells, set her on the ground, then use our hands to tap the bells with her nose/paw and then pick her up and take her potty. CONSISTENCY!!! It can't be a ~sometimes thing~ it's an EVERY TIME thing!!! :)

when she was a puppy we would take her out every hour on the hour for the first 2 weeks, then we moved to every 2 hours for like 2 weeks, then 3 and so on for potty training purposes. so she never really had the chance to potty in her pen. we also don't keep water in the pen or crate so she doesn't drink to make her go potty!! I hope that's helpful!!

and also the same concept for the play pen as the crate: her pen when she was a puppy was really only big enough to fit her bed and for the crate door to open and close, so not a lot of EXTRA room for the bed/bath combo thing lol.
