A relay from your breakout board to start the coolant pump will start your pump with the spindle. A cheap in-line flow indicator will give you visual verification of coolant flow.
@AlAmantea4 жыл бұрын
Ben, you should really consider changing out that wiring. Extension cords are not meant for high flex situations over time (temporary only) and you have a chinese made electrical appliance ungrounded with a metal body not just next to, but with water and coolant running THROUGH it. Any leakage internally could float amperage into that coolant and be a potential for a shock without any indication until you touch the spindle, coolant, container, etc. SO/SJ is sold almost everywhere including ace hardware, and any electrical supplier. Please, don't let this go until you notice a problem, because the way you may notice the issue is when you die.

@AlAmantea3 жыл бұрын
@@CustomCraftedDesigns yes. A 10/3 sj or sjow will handle a max of 30 amps at 240volt. I would recommend if you don't need to have both neutral and ground, switch over to a 10/2 sjow for maximum flexibility. Most 240 volt Spindles don't need the neutral and only requires the 2 phase lines plus a ground. Each phase of the a/c acts as the "neutral" and or return for the opposite phase during operation. You MUST have the spindle body grounded to a known good electrical ground line.

Pro tip for soldering. To stop the amount the heatshrink shrinks, wet both surfaces with solder first (heat the connection and apply solder to the hot surface so that it makes proper contact) after both the wire and terminal are "wet" slap the heat-shrink on then its a 3-5 second job to fully solder the wire onto the terminal and this will almost completely stop the heat-shrink from shrinking until its on properly. Avoiding cold solder joints also reduces resistance which can affect the three phase supply to the spindle.

instead of helping hands, i recommend sticky tack. For hanging posters etc. Make yourself a big ball of it and stick it to the side of your solder station. When you need to solder wires, stick it to the table and smash your wire down into it. It will stay in place while you solder. Sometimes the heat will make it extra sticky and some will stick to your wire, if this happens use the wad to dab it off as it cools. Super easy.

Got a 65mm spindle. First thing I noticed is once you mount the spindle in the stock mount, the top of the spindle hits the Z motor. You can position the spindle to just not touch the motor, but you are going to lose about 4 to 5 inches of z travel. Not a big deal if you are doing 2d carves, but for those who are doing 3d, losing that much travel could be an issue. Apparently the 80mm mount avoids this issue.

If someone wants a 4 wire cable go to your local electrical supply or one of the big box stores and get some 14/4 300-Volt CU Black Flexible Portable Power SJOOW (or SOOW) Cord. It's sold by the foot and should cost less than $2 a foot. You could probably use 16/4 for a 800 watt spindle, there would be little difference in cost so why not go for the larger gauge conductor. Remember you'll be potentially running this spindle for hours at a time. Using pieces of an extension cord is not the same. Extension cords are not intended for continuous use which is loosely defined as over 3 hours. Lighter gauge wire and extended run times can lead to heating in the cable. Be safe, go big and you won't be sorry. I will admit I did not read through all the previous comments and all this may have been mentioned before. If so my apologies.

I have noticed in some of your videos that the Makita router is sometimes a "visitor" to your 1F CNC, so I was wondering why do you still use it (do you still use it?) and what would be your final verdict about installing a spindle and VFD instead of a Makita router? (In my case, I'm considering the 80 mm one, now that we have 80 mm mounts available!) I have decent electronic knowledge and consider myself a skilled DIYer so, I am not afraid of the technical challenge. Performance is mostly my concern here. Good video, 3 thoughts though, You DO need the ground wire on the spindle! Get some 4 wire (soow cabtire will do), and use the ground. If there is a fault in the (It is Chines after all) VFD, the spindle and any metal in contact with it will be live, If the yellow shirt or any of his offspring touch this metal they will start doing the funky chicken in the garage. The boss will come down to deal with it with great vigor, and you'll be sleeping with Onefinity! the The ground is designed to provide a low impedance path to the panel. When a fault occurs it will produce a current that will immediately trip the breaker in your panel! i.e. no garage dances. Also you don't need Stakons but if do you can just crimp them instead. Just strip and clamp the wire directly. Faster easier and better because there is 1 less connection to fail. If you do solder you should use non acid core solder and use flux, tin the wire, then the connector , then solder the 2, they will bond faster so you wont heat the wire as much. Also you should add a switch to the line side of the VFD, and use it whenever you change tools,
@CorruptName13 жыл бұрын
instead of trimming back the sheathing, shorten your heat-shrink tubing. also, shrink it after each joint. and most importantly, tin your wire before you slide the heat shrink on. Then you don't need to heat the wire so long.

You usually dont use electric extension cords. You would use bulk cabling from HomeDepot or Lowes its usually referred to as 4 conductor security wire for lower amperage. Or you can use 12\3 or 14\3 wire. The first number is the gauge of wire, the 2nd number is the number of conductors (excluding ground). So a standard wall uses 14\2 where the ground wire is assumed.

I guess you water pump is for 220V; I got mine from China is 220V. If you plug in to 110V power source, then theoretically it will damage your water pump since power = amp x volt. Thus the current will be double inside the pump.

Never ever not earth/ground the spindle! Always use shielded cable between VFD and spindle to avoid high frequency electrical noise being induced into all your control wiring!

You wasn't kidding about not knowing anything about electricity

There are so many wrong things in this video, you should probably pull it and remake it. Purchase some real continuous flex automation cable, like from Belden or IGUS. Regular residential cord is not designed for this. You can get it in a couple days from multiple sources online. AutomationDirect is a great CNC source. If you repurpose a colored wire you should use electrical tape or markers to label the wire. Using green as a hot is not good without marking it. Not grounding is a violation of electrical code. It is a huge liability. Not only dangerous, but don't expect insurance to pay up if you have a claim involving the unit. The VFD wires from UVW not RST as shown in video up front. Third hands are under $10 on Amazon. Correct soldering is to use flux each connection. Firsr flux and solder inside each pin of plug. Second, flux and solder tin each wire end. With a small dab of flux on the now tinned pin, simply align wire to pin and apply heat. Solder quickly bonds with solder tinned wire, and heat shrink shouldn't overheat in the process. Depending on what flux you use, follow instructions to clean it off if required. Power is IN from the wall. It is OUT to the spindle. Use a compound joint pliers wire crimper for leverage. Soldering those was a good choice, as loose connections cause resistance, which causes heat, and worse. "Good enough for me" isn't really a great idea when working with electricity, especially multiphase high voltage. Always check all the VFD programming before EVER running motor. There are a lot of settings to match the VFD to the motor specification. Some kits are preconfigured, others are wrong. If you don't buy a kit, you must make all the settings yourself. I like you pointing out you are using water with electricity, but didn't think ground was important enough. Metric water hose is available on Amazon. I know a lot of people come here for how to do it, and it is probably a good candidate for you to consider a redo on. Thanks for all your content. Good channel overall.

It can not be called CNC if you can not control speed of the spindle by software

Ben, I have followed you since you acquired the Onefinity machine and also we purchased the 1F cnc, the VFD and spindle package and all this has arrived. All this just from watching you. Thanks a lot. Now for the question, where is the video for the first wires in the breakout board? I am ready to connect mine. Thanks for your help and videos.

You need more water. For $160 you can buy a chiller for it, way more efficient.

Better get a bigger reservoir, some of my jobs run 8 to 10 hours that coolant is going to get hot
@eyecandy-gaming3 жыл бұрын
maybe and some fans to cool down the coolant. like a car radiator. run the coolant through some bendy copper tubing and have some fans blowing on it.

Metric or imperial. It’s kinda funny how they stick with old English measurement system. Even after the civil war. Not even the tea was good enough 😜. Now you Building stuff for the international market in Metric. And are stuck with fraction converter and no factors for converting inches to feet to miles.
