What I really like about you is that you just do it. You aren’t afraid to take on any jobs at all. You are doing a great job with the boat and editing your videos. If I can make one suggestion, practice docking the boat alongside a wall or dock. Instead of trying to tie up while the boat is still moving forward, put the boat in reverse to stop it and then take it out of gear. I’m sure this will all happen over time, but you are doing really great for a first timer and you are better than some seasoned boaters. Greetings from Naples, Florida, enjoy my friend. 😀😀😀

Excellent. You have top notch humor. On the serious side, you made the most common newbie boating mistake of all, believing you could stop a 10-15 tonnes boat by simply grabbing onto a rope on the dock. Be sure to take ALL inertia out of the boat before grabbing onto anything, especially with a boat hook. Lessons learned. Tomorrow is a new day. Enjoy the adventure

You need a boat hook to reach the dock; or to drop a line over the bollard. You also need a fender board. A fender board is any old board - I use a 2" X 4" about 5 feet long. At the ends, drill holes for a line; thread the lines through the holes; fasten the line with a figure eight knot on the bottom. That's it! Now when you tie up alongside a concrete wall, you hang your fenders - properly spaced - from your railing. You put the fender board between the concrete wall (or piling) and in front of your fenders. The fender board rubs against the concrete wall, protecting your fenders from wear and dirt. When the fender board is worn out, make a new one.

In England we often use a boat hook to assist in mooring and fending off. The older type are far too aggressive but there are now plastic ones. For quick mooring, for example in locks, I just use one central rope on the mooring side. One sees a lot of overkill on inland waterways as far as rope size is concerned and this, too, makes handling difficult. When leaving a river quay, secure the downstream end of the boat and release the upstream then let the current swing you out to the position where you can just use a steady forward speed to move you away.
@TheByard3 жыл бұрын
I cruised my wooden 1930s boat around UK, into France, Belgium and three summer seasons in the Netherlands, keeping her in winter storage near Yerseke. Most off the time I was single crew and so perfected a method of mooring as locks are very frequent and most impotent was a safe way of handling lines. My fore line was put to a cleat at the flair of the bow, this prevent the stern swinging out when the line came taught. Using a cleat in the bow would cause the stern to swing out when the pivot point touches the dock. The stern line one was long enough to double up to mid ships. Two lines attached ready on each side of the boat so mooring was easy both port and starboard sides. A boat hook was used to attache the bow line to the shore cleat, the inset cleats at locks can sometimes be hard to throw over and missed throws loose time and boat position. My boat was twin screw so a quick blast of the outside engine in reverse would bring the stern into the dock. I could also turn 360 with the rudder midships and one engine in forward the other in reverse. This proved very handy in packed marinas. Do practice your mooring methods with the single engine/ bow thruster set up you have, especially the best prop walk methods you can achieve. Plus mooring with and against river/canal flows, all this practice will earn you some smiles and perhaps a pat on the back from all those people who love to watch boaters mooring up. An old sailor told me: You must keep one hand for the boat and the other one for yourself. Good luck with the rebuild and safe and fun boating.

1. A boat hook would help. 2. if you have a bow thruster, I would suggest reversing until you are virtually stopped, just inching forward, perhaps a quarter of the speed you were going. 3. I am going to suggest bigger fenders, perhaps junk tires if your hull is dark enough so that rubber marks don't show too badly. And put the fender down at the gunnel because handrails usually aren't strong enough.

My friend you need some mooring practice, a couple of tips, take the bow of the boat in and have a bow rope ready and tied to the boat, nose the boat in gently to where the cleat or pilling is, tie off the bow with a bit of slack, now gently reverse the boat away from where you have tied off until the rope goes tight, now rudder the stern towards the dock, leave the engine in reverse on tick over and the rudder hard over so to boat pulls into the dock the boat will hold itself against their on the engine whilst you tie off the aft rope. Once tied, disengage the engine and turn it off. If you want to lasso a cleat or pilling, you need to do it from a slightly further distance, the key is to prep the rope, it must be neatly prepped, so do three neat loops in each hand, but it must be in order so the last loop is the one you will throw, you grip the furthest loops in each hand, throw your arms out and forward and every time you will catch the cleat or pilling. Practice somewhere on land, it’s a great skill. Hope this helps.

You should have used the angle iron for the vertical pieces. Flat iron will flex and bend with minor pressure (weight) while the angle iron will not flex under two or three or even four times more weight. Put a red tie wrap at the twelve o'clock position on your wheel with the rudder amidship, that way at a quick glance you will see the position of the rudder.

You did alright there, whenever you get your boat tied up without damaging yours or somebody else's it's a win & bowthruster helps a lot, use prop walk to your advantage whenever you can - in reverse she'll pull to port if you have a right handed propeller (most are right handed) & vice versa. How's the engine oil looking?

Instead of that piece of wood, buy yourself a proper boat hook ! :) You do well with that little stick welder, but if you have any big projects to do in the future, you really should invest in a MIG welder with gas, like the professional welder you hired had. Yes, the gas bottle takes up a lot of space. Or hire him back. For wood pieces use 3 or 4 coats of marine spar varnish. Mix in about 25% boiled linseed oil. You can use BLO straight, but the second, third and fourth coats will take DAYS to dry. Despite you best efforts, I think you will have leaks around the bolts for that arch. The base needs to be flush with the cabin roof. Get some think plastic (inexpensive cutting board) and try to sand it down to the proper angle. Most sealants will fail sooner or later. Better off using something like butyl tape that is not too expensive and easily replaceable. Make sure you have some drain holes so the rain water does not puddle around that mounting plate. ENJOY BOAT LIFE !

I noticed as you went under the bridge your front mast made it under by only a few inches. Your framework that you installed on the back of your boat, however, is much higher. I don't think it would fit under that same bridge. All the best with your renovation.

@Stephen Smith I was thinking the same thing.. Two words "Boat Hook" Easy to grab the lines off the pier. And push your stern out as you leave... Maybe two, one on each side of the cabin so your not running back and forth trying to grab it in a emergency... They're fairly inexpensive and worth every dime. Also, would have removed the muffler on your genny the next day... Just to let your "neighbors" know you were still there..😂

Have you considered adding a high amperage secondary alternator to the boat’s motor? The boat is obviously quieter than the generator and has much more fuel. Furthermore it will reduce clutter and be super easy to add. Just an idea. You could then put a heavy duty inverter on it to run AC loads or other needs.

You definitely need a boat hook! Reaching like that could end in a wet disaster. I recommend hanging the fenders a bit lower to protect the hull at its widest point, where it would contact the wall. By the way it is a boat, not a ship. Think about it this way. The larger a boat gets at some point it becomes a ship. You can put a boat on a ship, but not a ship on a boat.
@adenw3693 жыл бұрын
Oh stfu he can call it a ship if he wants

Why not use angle on the front of the platform instead of the flat stock? If you were to lift the bow up on the dingy you can leave the drain out so rain doesn’t collect in the bow. It seems you have a LOT of body filler on that hull.
@jfisk609033 жыл бұрын
I'm more than a little concerned you're using a non marine generator that appears to be air cooled. I have a feeling it's gonna be one hot engine room if you run that Genny for more than 1/2 an hour at a time. Been boating for a very long time and have had several generators on my boats. Not a single one was air-cooled. Just something to consider, eg: extreme fire hazard if you aren't moving a ton of CFM of air into that compartment for heat transfer and fresh air to safely operate the unit.

"At some point and Ikea book shelf passed by"... That genuinely made me chuckle a bit, good fun. I'd say your doing great. She's on the water and still floating and you did okay getting her docked. I'd maybe build or by a catch pole as you will need it most of the time when docking alone, just to make life easier. It's a shame there aren't two tie offs on that wall so you could run two lines one from close to the bow and one from close to the stern making an X to keep her more steady and stop the shifting back and forth. That's caused by the force of the light current stretching the lines which makes the boat drift back a bit and then the spring/stretch of the line pulling her forward. Light current though so you should be okay just straight tied other then the constant backward and forward motion. Sorry I don't know the nautical terms to sound all pro sailor as I've only ever owned and sailed/piloted boats on fresh water lakes and such and never felt the need to learn them. I don't think you were lucky that your new platform turned out so level I think it was due to taking your time and doing it right...

Just a arm-chair observation: The washers used for holding the hoop on are way to small in diameter. At least a 30mmX3mm washers are needed to spread the load... else, though not a big chance, they current nuts and washers could pull through the holes... ot at least bend and distort them.
