Finally Painting the Car! Datsun 240Z Restoration (Part 5)

In this video I'm continuing the restoration on my 1973 Datsun 240Z. In the last video the car was blasted, primed and also high build primer was applied.
After a few weeks of curing the high build primer it was time to start preparing the car for the final paint job. The complete car and all its parts were block sanded. To see low spots better a dry guide coat was applied. Sanding is needed until all low spots are gone, but you need to stop sanding once you reach bare metal. If there are still low spots after that, means it needs body filler. Sometimes also a few light hammer hits could also help. On all the spots with body filler and bare metal was epoxy primer applied. Doors, fenders, hood and tailgate looked still a bit rough after that step. That's why another coat of high build primer came on for the final fine sanding with 320 grit. After this step the paint had 2 months time to properly cure before the actual paint job. During that time I applied seam sealer and sealed all gaps and everything where water could get trapped. I also installed sound deadening on the inside of the car. It's extra made to be painted, this way I'm having it like it was original.
Right before the paint all surfaces were fine sanded with 400 grit. First the chassis was on the rotisserie to apply the undercoating. Then the car was painted underneath, inside and the engine bay. First one closed layer of the right grey shade was applied, after around 30 minutes 2-3 coats of base coat was applied. I choosed an original Datsun color: Datsun 920 Safari Gold. The color was adjusted a little bit to have more pop, the original one was a bit pale and too brownish. To finish the paint job, two nice coats of clear coat were applied. The car then came off the rotisserie to paint the outside. Once the chassis was done all the remaining parts were painted. For the rear panels, spoilers, grille and wheels I picked a nice anthracite called Daytona Grey. All these parts were covered by a matte clear coat. The dark parts fit very nice with the mustard yellow ones in my opinion, they have a very nice contrast.
This was such a big journey to come to this point and I'm very happy to finally have the car painted. It took 48 days of work for all the work you can see in that 13 minutes video.
I hope you like my work and enjoy the video.

This video seems like a quick and easy job, but I was working on the prep and paint for 48 days in the workshop. I'm very happy that this chapter with the body is now finally closed and I can move on with the other parts to get the car back together. Thank you so much for all your support! Without you this project would not be possible for me. If you would like to support my work more, you can join my Patreon at patreon.com/mymechanics To give you something back, I'm uploading daily vlogs out of the workshop to keep you updated.

"This Datsun 240Z is crusty. I make a new one". Jokes aside: It is SUPER nice to see a body reconditioning and paint job that is actually done to the highest standards. It's just SOOOOO satisfying watching "I'll make it how your inner child remembers it, not how poorly they actually did it at the factory" unfold on my screen. Your hard work is truly appreciated. I can't even imagine the man-hours that went into masking, sanding and cleaning. Putting on the final coats of paint and clear is the smallest part of the job.

It actually amazes me how silly people have been in the comment sections of this video, and past videos of the car. It doesn't take much to look around the internet at projects that have taken 240Z restorations to extreme heights and precision. People are getting all worked up for nothing new.

As someone who's stepfather owns a body shop and has been painting and doing body work on cars since he was 8. This is single handedly my favorite car restoration on KZbin so far. You don't cut any corners. Your prep work is beyond thorough. It's so satisfying to watch someone who does all the little things first. My stepdad is a 40+ year master certified painter for Ford, and he would be happy with the work you do. Thanks, man, for making this wonderful content.

Absolutely. But that's because you can't go around spending massive amounts of time (and thus, money) on each unit if you want to sell any of them, especially in a market such as the car market where there is good competition. People will quite simply just buy from your competitor across the street. Most people literally just want something that takes them from A to B.

The minimalist approach to editing putting that second layer of perfection to it all. Now you scale up and go even deeper not only restoring but reimaging a complete car to utter perfection that even the original japanese engineers would not be able to reach. I have worked for customer service companies that work with automobile repair and replacement. I have lost track of the number of owners who called in because of a small flaw in the clear coat. 20 years ago (it took me 8 years) I restored a 1973 240Z. It started out brown (same as yours), ended up white. I rebuilt a 1982 280ZX turbo engine from a donor car with 5-speed and put it in the 240Z. I raised the boost from 7 PSI to 14, added an intercooler, and unded up making 300 H.P. at the wheels. Best project I ever did, putting 30,000 miles on it in the process. Brings back memories. Thanks!
