Kepler was a great scientist (since physicist was not a term then) and it's obvious that he was incredibly genius, so he had to be very close( just like scientist today are to the quantum physics)
@thegoodlydragon7452
@thegoodlydragon7452 3 жыл бұрын
The legacy of Greek philosophy was a mixed bag. The concept of logic, applied math, and scrutiny definitely aided progress, but at the same time these obsessions with all of these particular notions like Plato's forms, Plato's solids, Aristotle's notions of physics being based on these quasi-mystical ideas of cosmic place etc. were definitely impediments when they were clung to dogmatically. I think there's a lesson in that for our own modern times. Abstracting might be the essence of good science, but ONLY when the model actually fits the data, and NOT just because it seems pretty and orderly. Kepler was in that intellectual milieu and so of course he was influenced by its prejudices towards favoring all things classical, passed down as received wisdom from the great masters.

Razer1103 there’s no way that’s true. KZbin wouldn’t stifle creators like that, especially if they have a KZbin Red series. I think it’s because this is more of a mini video; he doesn’t go off on many tangents. Instead, he completely focused on the Mysterium Cosmographicum

For all the people saying that there are 48 regular polyhedra, that is very true, but michael was talking about bounded convex shapes (not explicitly stated in the definition of a Platonic solid by Plato but platonic solids are classed as refular regular polyhedra that fall under this category), so no stellated dodecahedrons or euclidean tilings.

The platonic solids are not the only regular polyhedra possible in 3d euclidian space. They are only the Finite convex polyhedra, but there are actually 48 polyhedra possible that fit the mathematical definition of regular polyhedra (meaning they have edge transitivity, vertex transitivity, and face transitivity). Basically, you can build polyhedra out of skewed petrial polygons or polygons that self intersect but are not convex, etc. None of these are disallowed by the definition of either regular polyhedra or regular polygons and in order to disqualify any of these shapes (even if they don't feel like they should fit the definition like flat tilings) you would have to amend the definition specifically to exclude these shapes Visualizations of the expanded regular polyhedra set: cpjsmith.uk/regularpolyhedra Interesting paper: link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/PL00009304.pdf

I don't study science ( I'm a nurse, so I have a little notion of it), and these abstract things would go over my head if some university professor tried to explain me. Michael is an exellent storyteller and is so good at explaining and showing the ideas/theories/mathsjizzle without making it to complicated and without forcing his opinion. Never stop doing what you're doing Michael.

Wait, i thought that by the time Kepler was was inspirational, Copernicus' sun-center theory was already picking up steam.
@DrScrubbington
@DrScrubbington 4 жыл бұрын
Not exactly. Copernicus had theorized it, but it wasn't until about a hundred years later that people began accepting it scientifically. In fact, the ancient Greek astronomer Aristarchus was the first to theorize it in the 3rd century BC, and Copernicus actually attributed his theory to him. But it went silent for 18 centuries before Copernicus finally revived the theory.

1:32 There are only 5 regular convex polyhedra. There also concave polyhedra (kepler-poinsot solids) and polyhedra with coplanar faces (tilings)
